RELIGIOUS EDUCATION OF OUR MOSLEMS


BETWEEN TRADITION AND MODERN TIMES
Summary
Refreshing their mind and thoughts by memories of their proud scientific
tradition and numerous great men praised in the whole Islam world, our
Moslems in modern times could not at all be subdued except if fundamental
principles of their learning would be
radically endangered and if a new
conception of science would be established to equal previous intellectual tradition
with superstition, and after that to discredit former scientists and their writings cut
off from scientific national heritage.
Because of this, Austro Hungary enforced necessity of profaneness and
quasi modernization in the system of religious Moslems education. Our Moslem
intellectuals from the end of the XIX and the beginning of the XX century under
pretence of necessary progress directed their people towards a new stage of
knowledge in modern science.
Inspired by the spirit of religious culture in which the institution of
science is always recognised as a sacred one, Moslems joined in the process of
premature promotion
of the empiric science results, completely ignoring the knowledge and cultural
implications of this science. They considered that the sole mode to preserve Islam
was to promote a harmony between Islam religious learning and modern science.
That is why many of reformer religious courses interpreted Islam and its God's
and sacred learning in the frame of modern knowledge system which numerous
principles, restricted to limits of cognition, not at all allowed the presence of
scientific, anthropologic and socio-political elements of any divine
announcement.
It cannot be denied that Islam education with us made a considerable
progress at the beginning of the XX century. Nevertheles, it should be
investigated how successful was clergy in preserving basic principles of
knowledge stadium of Islam, because of rapid reforms, and in concentrating to
modernisation and prosperity in the frame of Theo monistic horizon of religious
tradition, but not in necessary equalling progress with modernism.
