Smartphone usage in the classroom

Should student use of smartphones be banned or limited during school hours? This controversial question becomes extremely important when interruptions occur continuously during educational sessions. Clearly, because of common issues, it may be the smart thing to at least limit smartphone usage, even though students may feel it would be an invasion of their privacy. For educators, it is by far a rude and insulting interference of both their time spent preparing and time spent trying to teach the students. Possibly, if students were taught more about courtesies and proper etiquettes this would not be a major issue, but sadly etiquette class went out the window many years ago and we are now paying dearly for it. Also, there are plenty of different technological products in use in most schools for educational purposes. Personal tools are usually not necessary. The only reason a phone should be used is for limited, teacher approved objectives or for emergencies. We have to remember to keep schools a place to teach not only by the book, but also often forgotten life lessons, such as respect.
