Bloemfontein: The Premier of the Free State, Mr. ES Magashule and the Executive Mayor of Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, Clr. Thabo Manyoni, invites you to form part of the unveiling of Charlotte Maxeke Street (the former Maitland Street) and the Memorial Lecture on the life of Charlotte Maxeke to be presented by Honourable President Jacob Zuma on Saturday, 04 August 2012. The procession will start at Waaihoek Church at 07:30, marching to Hoffman Square where the unveiling will take place. The square is situated between St Andrew and Maitland Street. The programme at Hoffman Square will be led by the MEC for Social Development, Honourable Sisi Ntombela, and will take place as follows: 1. National Anthem SAPS 2. Opening and Welcome Manyoni 3. The unveiling will then culminate to the University of the Free State where the

Honourable President Jacob Zuma will deliver the 5th annual Charlotte Maxeke Memorial Lecture in the Callie Human Centre of the University of the Free State's (UFS) Bloemfontein Campus, at 12:00. The lecture will honour the life of the ANC Womens League stalwart. The Memorial Lecture is a joint venture between the Free State Provincial Government and the UFS and forms part of Womens Month Celebrations. President Zuma will speak about the role of women in the past 100 years and the journey forward. President Zuma will be accompanied by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga, who is also President of the ANC Womens League. Prof. Jonathan Jansen, Vice-Chancellor and Rector of the UFS, will deliver the welcome address. The Charlotte Maxeke Memorial Lecture focuses on issues and challenges affecting women. The first lecture was dedicated to Charlotte Maxekes life and times as well as the early years of the Bantu Womens League, the forerunner of the ANC Womens League. Previous speakers included Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Prof. Hlengiwe Mkhize and Ms Baleka Mbete, National Chairperson of the ANC and former Speaker of Parliament. Charlotte Maxeke was the first African woman graduate in South Africa and one of the first black South Africans to fight for freedom from exploitative social conditions meted against African women.
