A 1995 letter sent by Jimmy Deenihan (then Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture) to the late Tony Gregory, TD.
Deenihan acknowledges that "there are some practices associated with [foxhunting] that are not acceptable" and pledges to proceed towards introducing legislation to prohibit such practices. Deenihan's pledge from over 17 years ago was never fulfilled and foxes have continued to suffer the most horrendous abuse during hunting activities.
The practices Deenihan was referring to would include:
Terrierwork: Terriers are sent underground to attack foxes which are trying to escape from the pack of hounds. Horrific injuries are sustained by the fox as he is cornered and bitten.
Earthblocking: The blocking of fox earths and drains to prevent foxes finding refuge during a foxhunt. Foxes may be chased for hours and many miles until, exhausted, they can run no more and are caught by the pack and ripped apart.
Digging out: The use of spades and shovels to dig out foxes that have gone to ground. The foxes are cornered by terriers while members of the hunt dig down to the fox before killing it.
Cub hunting: A gruesome training exercise for hounds new to foxhunting. Fox coverts are surrounded and the hounds are encouraged to attack and kill young fox cubs.
The Irish Council Against Blood Sports believes that the only way to eliminate the cruelty from hunting is to replace the fox with an artificial lure, i.e. drag hunting. We are therefore continuing to push for a total ban on foxhunting in Ireland.
