COURSE OBJECTIVES: To impart basic knowledge about different refrigeration cycles and air-conditioning. PRE-REQUISITES: Thermodynamics COURSE CONTENTS: S. No. 1 2 3 4 5 Description Introduction: Review of thermodynamic processes. Environmental issues. Methods of refrigeration Refrigerants: designation, units of refrigeration, properties, environmental considerations. Simple Vapor compression cycles. Gas cycle refrigeration. Components: condensers, evaporators, compressors and expansion devices construction, operation and performance.( To be discussed). Vapor compression system: Ideal and real cycle analyses, design and optimization. Advanced Vapor compression cycles. part-load operation. Vapor absorption cycles: operation, system design, components. MTE Psychrometry: definitions, heating, cooling, humidification and dehumidification processes, evaporative cooling systems. Environmental comfort specifications and standards.. Cooling load estimation and use of standards. Air-conditioning systems and apparatus, air flow ducts, air quality. Control and optimization of HVAC systems. Recent developments in refrigeration and air conditioning
