Stricter rules imposed for EDSA bus scheme

MANILA, Philippines Metro Manilas traffic district heads met with officials of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Thursday to discuss the new yellow-lane scheme for buses.

After the meeting, several agreements were made regarding restrictions on the yellow-lane policy.

All city buses shall only be allowed to use the designated bus lanes under the new policy.

Both city and provincial buses are not allowed to use EDSA's tunnels and underpasses but they can use the Magallanes flyover.

North-bound city buses shall also be allowed to use the Ortigas flyover.

Provincial buses, meanwhile, can use other flyovers and EDSA's third lane as well.

Private vehicles may only enter the bus lanes when making right turns to side roads of EDSA or when entering EDSA from the side roads.

They can also load and unload at the bus lanes, but only for 15 seconds.

Bus stops

The loading and unloading zones for provincial buses will also be strictly implemented under the new scheme.

For city buses, a first in-first out dispatching scheme will be observed and they cannot stay at bus stops for longer than 20 seconds.

Heavier fines

MMDA said fines for violators will also be adjusted for the new scheme.

Private vehicles and taxis with passengers caught entering the yellow lane will be meted a fine of P500.

Buses that go outside their designated lanes, on the other hand, will be fined P200.

P1,000 will be charged for violation of the closed-door policy and bus designation scheme and P500 for swerving and reckless driving. -- Report from Maan Macapagal, ABS-CBN News
