Certain enzymes can cut pieces of DNA from one organism, and join them into a gap in the

DNA of another organism. This means that the new organism with the inserted genes has the genetic information for one or more new characteristics. For example, the organism might produce a useful substance, or be able to carry out a new function. We say that the organism has been genetically modified.

By performing genetic engineering, scientists can obtain knowledge about genetic mechanisms. For example, they may be able to uncover some secrets of genetic mapping. Genetic mapping is the identification of individual genes for various functions Genetic manipulation is most commonly used to transfer desirable qualities from one organism to another to improve the ability of other species to serve humankind. Many examples of this lie in the use of genetic engineering to solve many problems with regards to food production and agriculture, waste disposal and industry, as well as disease and medicine (Rubenstein). The processes are also used for examining evolutionary processes.

I am for genetic engineering because Disease could be prevented by detecting people/plants/animals that are genetically prone to certain hereditary diseases, and preparing for the inevitable. Also, infectious diseases can be treated by implanting genes that code for antiviral proteins specific to each antigen .Also, genes could also be manipulated in trees for example to absorb more coz and reduce the threat of global warming. Other benefits include It is possible to alter the genetics of wheat plants to grow insulin for example However I am sceptical of the fact that there are some problems such as the fact that some scientists believe that introducing genetically modified genes may have an irreversible effect with consequences yet unknown. Also GE borderlines on many moral issues, particularly involving religion, which questions whether man has the right to manipulate the laws and course of nature.
