Guest Speakers

Dr. Nazeem Muhajarine,

University of Saskatchewan,
is a social epidemiologist interested in the impact that neighbourhoods have on childrens health and development.

Tackling the problem of obesity requires multiple approaches. However, there has been little research into how the urban built environment - buildings, roadways, sidewalks, parks and green spaces - can encourage physical activity. By learning what is and isnt working in our communities, we can help shape the design of future neighbourhoods in Canada. Speakers will share findings from their built environment research in Saskatoon, Vancouver and Edmonton. Participants will have the opportunity to develop ideas for creating more walkable neighbourhoods by joining in mobile workshops, breakout sessions and interactive discussions.

Dr. Candace Nykiforuk, University of Alberta, is a

health geographer and researcher interested in the impacts of the built and social environment on the development of program and policy changes to support health.

Dr. Meghan Winters,

Simon Fraser University, is a
health researcher interested in the link between health, transportation and city design.
