Onam Festival Celebrations & Events in India

Wishing You a Very Happy Onam 2012! Onam, Keralas famous harvest festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm throughout the state of India. It is celebrated to welcome the King Mahabali (the demon ruler of Kerala) who comes down to earth on the day of Onam to bless his followers and devotees.

Onam falls in the month of Chingam ( Aug Sept ), the first month of the Malayalam calendar. This year Onam falls on 29th August, 2012 i.e on coming Wednesday. Onam is celebrated for 10 days which includes Onam Pookalam (Flower Rangoli), Onam Sadya (Special Onam Food), snake boat race, Kaikottikali dance & much more.

The Thrikkakara temple, located 10 kms north-east of Kochi, is considered to be the seat of famous 10 days Onam celebrations in Kerala. Thrikkakara is considered to be capital of the good asura (demon) King Mahabali, whose rule was prematurely stopped by Lord Vishnu in the diguise as a Brahmin boy, when the Hindu gods became jealous of the growing power of the generous and kind-hearted king. The Vishnu temple here is the only one of its kind to have Vamana (one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu) as the deity.
