Helmet Reform 2013

EDITORS LETTER
Wow - Another summer has come & gone we hope that you all have enjoyed some good times & great riding these past few months. If you have pictures or stories or both, from your adventures, please email them to us so we can share them with everyone. We only have so much space in the magazine each month so please be patient as we try to get them in as quickly as we can. Our main focus & cover feature this month has turned to the efforts of the Virginia Coalition of Motorcyclists (VCOM) for Helmet Reform. As we all are very aware of, Virginia has had a mandatory helmet law for as long as most of us can remember so its 2nd nature for us to strap on our helmet when were heading out for a ride. Wouldnt it be nice for us to have the right to choose whether or not to wear it? I do understand & respect those who feel strongly about always wearing a helmet. But for those, on the other hand, who feel strongly about having the freedom of choice in this matter, they are finally getting their shot to be involved & help in the efforts for a long awaited helmet reform. I would travel outside of VA year after year to go to Myrtle Beach or other states that did not have a mandatory helmet law just so that I could ride with no helmet. I know a lot of people who do the same thing. Isnt that crazy?...I cant even imagine how much money the state of Virginia (or any of the other 19 states with mandatory helmet laws), loses each year because riders will travel outside of their home states borders to enjoy the freedom that they would love to have right here at home, in another state. The number of states that have fought & won helmet reform continues to grow over the years.Virginia has a good shot at it at Lobby Day in Richmond in January 2013. We are trying to help get the word out so that VCOM will get plenty of support from motorcyclists in ever nook & cranny of the state. There have been no promises made that it will definitely go through but they do know that without the support & donations of Virginias motorcyclists, the chance of a victory will diminish greatly. VCOM works so hard every day of the year for us & most people dont even know who they are. A lot of the freedoms & safe roadways that you travel on today were made possible by the efforts of VCOM . See pages 38 & 39 of this issue for more info on how YOU can help. We raise money to help others all through the year the average money spent at any given poker run or charity event is around $40 - $50 per person (gas, registration, food/drinks etc.).10 Bucks is all you need to help! And get thisTom McGraths Law Group is matching donations up to $25,000 !!! Please send your donation in, hold an event or partake in one every dollar counts. We love having you all with us & appreciate all the support each & every month. Have a fun month & make every day a great one stay safe on your roads & well see you again next month. Til then Happy Trails

Sep 9th Virginia Legislative Roundtable Richmond, VA This years Virginia Legislative Roundtable will be held on September 9, 2012 at the Richmond Marriott which is located at 500 East Broad St., Richmond, VA 23219. The Legislative Roundtable is where Virginia Motorcyclists gather to discuss issues of importance to the motorcycling community and to have input on the 2013 legislative agenda to be presented to the Virginia General Assembly by the Virginia Coalition of Motorcyclists. The Roundtable will start at 12:00 P.M. and usually lasts three to four hours. If you can make it we would welcome your voice in deciding the issues that need to be addressed in 2013. In past years the Roundtable was the starting point for legislation such as Virginias red light bill, our prohibition against motorcycle only checkpoints, and the modification of Virginia law to allow two two-wheeled motorcycles to travel abreast in a single lane. If you are interested in attending, or if you have any questions concerning this years Virginia Legislative Roundtable, please do not hesitate to contact me. Proud To Be AN AMERICAN
This May 28-July 28, a group of disabled veterans from Americas military rode bicycles, hand cycles and recumbent cycles from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. Managed by the leading not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, World T.E.A.M. Sports, the 2012 Sea to Shining Sea ride honored the courage of our military and the strength of the American spirit. Since the majority of the participants are disabled, the ride provided a dramatic example that disabled Americans can lead productive lives and accomplish remarkable athletic feats. Participating veterans of World T.E.A.M. Sports 2012 Sea to Shining Sea ride live with disabilities ranging from loss of limbs to blindness to Post Traumatic Stress. These veterans served America in wars from Afghanistan and Iraq to Bosnia to Vietnam. Their participation serves as an inspiration to other disabled persons nationally, as well as inspiring the able-bodied to overcome obstacles and challenges in life. At many cities and community that the ride passed through, community and media events were held to promote the ride and the riders, allowing the public to meet the team. The riders stopped at selected military bases along the way, as well as connected with local communities of disabled persons in towns and cities. 2012 Ride A short cross-country bike ride starting May 28th in San Francisco ended July 28th in Virginia Beach, VA. 3,698 miles. 18,765 feet of elevation gain. 14 states. 1 Penske truck. 4 GM fleet vehicles. 1 USO RV. 1,520 Energizer batteries. 16 exceptional athletes From San Francisco on May 28, the team passed through the Napa Valley and the rugged Sierra Nevada Mountains into Nevada at Carson City. Oh NUTS!

GOOD FOR YOU

People have a predictable response when they learn that nuts are a SuperFood. Most say, I cant eat nuts: theyre too fattening. I cant even have nuts in the house. If they are around, I eat them. These responses are understandable; nuts are just plain delicious. Certainly nuts are high in calories, but they have extraordinary health benefits and are an important addition to your diet. And well give you some tips on how to enjoy them judiciously so you wont get fat. First a simple fact: Eating a handful of nuts about five times a week will reduce your chances of getting a heart attack by at least 15 percent and possibly as much as 51 percent. Thats how powerful nuts are. As a new nutritional era emerges that moves well beyond macronutrients like fat and protein and into the exciting world of phytonutrients, nutritionists are rediscovering these little nutrition powerhouses. We can safely say that nuts will play an important role in maximizing the human health span during this century. Its a simple if astounding fact: people who eat nuts regularly can enjoy a significant reduction in their risk of developing coronary heart disease. Theyll also reduce their risk of diabetes, cancer, and a host of other chronic ailments. While walnuts are the flagship SuperFoods Rx nut, my other two top choices include almonds and pistachios. My top-choice seeds are pumpkin and sunflower seeds. Walnuts are the headliner for this category of SuperFood for a number of reasons. They are one of the few rich sources of plant-derived omega-3 fatty acids (called alpha linolenic acid, or ALA) along with canola oil, ground flaxseed and flaxseed oil, soybeans and soybean oil, wheat germ, spinach, and purslane. They are rich in plant sterolsplant sterols can play a significant role in lowering serum cholesterol levelsa good source of fiber and protein, and they also provide magnesium, copper, folate, and vitamin E. Finally, theyre the nut with the highest overall antioxidant activity.

by Patti Lauver The roar of thunder from the motorcycle engines was heard July 27th-29th at Kanawha Ridge in Dugspur Va. The weather was perfect throughout the weekend enticing motorcycle riders to participate in the events. Kanawha Ridge Lane is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and is home to the Kanawha Valley Arena. Owned and operated by Tommy Brown, Kanawha Valley Arena holds events throughout the entire year. Special events attended by many include Mud Bogs, Civil War Re-enactments, tractor and truck pulls, and Saddle up for Shinersspecial thanks to the Shriners who helped at the rally. Event schedules for the arena can be found at www. virginiarodeo.com. With the Blue Ridge Parkway within 30 minutes from the arena, this is a travel destination for local patrons as well as guest from other States and Countries. The Blue Ridge Parkway offers some of the finest riding views on the east coast. And along with these fine views, were energetic and enthusiastic motorcycle riders. We also had some enthusiastic dogs riding those motorcycles. The rally boasted many contests-bikini, the bikini bike wash, tattoo, and motorcycle took the top. Competitions included corn hole, hot dog, burn out pits and best decorated trailers and tents. Vendors included Southern Airbrushing, D&J Biker Wear, Precision Screen Printing, Everything Art, Floozie Koozies & Bike Jewelry, and Estelle and her husband who made patches and did leather sewing as well as sold motorcycle apparel. Kanawha has full hook up and primitive camping sites, concessions and beer on site, a full service bar and saloon with a western theme and a carriage house showcasing a variety of buggies, carriages and wagons, all worth visiting. Tommy (Brown), Brooke the Marketing Manager and staff wish to extend special thanks to Bob Ladd for his assistance in organizing the event, Twin County Bikers for their assistance with the guided tours of the beautiful region and all the motorcyclist who came out to enjoy the weekend.

FEDERAL E-15 MINIMUM FUEL PURCHASE MANDATE However inconceivable it may seem, ethanol has managed to earn itself another enemy. To service-station owners, refiners, vintage-car collectors, economists and car manufacturers themselves, add motorcycle riders, reported the New York Times in announcing a new EPA mandate that requires consumers to purchase a minimum of 4 gallons of E-15 gasoline. At issue is E15, a gasoline blend consisting of 15% ethanol, rather than the typical 10% formulation E10. The federal Environmental Protection Agency has approved E15 for all cars from the 2001 model year and newer, but the E.P.A. has not approved its use for any motorcycles or all-terrain vehicles and its use could void manufacturers warranties. To help keep E15 out of these and other unapproved nonroad engines, service stations offering E15 and E10 from the same pump station must agree to sell a minimum of 4 gallons of fuel per purchase in order to protect the engine of the next customers vehicle, as the fueling hose retains roughly a third of a gallon from the previous customers fillup. But not all motorcycle fill-ups reach four gallons, as some motorcycles dont have tanks with that volume, or their owners may want to merely top them off. Exactly how a service station with pay-at-the-pump equipment could enforce the rule remains unclear, and the new EPA requirement announced in a response to an AMA inquiry is already generating ire on Capitol Hill where Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) told the Times; The E.P.A. has no business mandating how much gasoline Americans have to buy when filling up at the pump. What if a rider doesnt have a motorcycle with a four gallon tank, he challenged. Or if someone wants to fill a canister for their lawnmower or outboard boat engine, but it only holds two or three gallons? Or what if an American, struggling in this economy, just cant afford four gallons of gas? ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES EXTENDED TAX CREDIT Good news for eco-minded aficionados of two-wheeled transport, as the Senate Finance Committee has approved a tax credit for purchasers of on-road electric motorcycles amounting to 10% of the purchase price up to $2,500. Electric-powered two wheelers have been without a federal purchase incentive since the beginning of 2012, when the original tax break expired that was part of the $800 billion stimulus package passed in 2009. The committee approved a bipartisan package of tax credits on August 2, including the amendment by Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) to extend the tax credit for buying EV bikes designed for street use. With thousands of red white and blue jobs on the line in Americas cutting edge E-bike industry, Wyden says the tax break is necessary and will cost $15 million over two years. Now the measure will be considered by the full Senate. LOOK TWICE IN WISCONSIN An effort by ABATE of Wisconsin to place signs that build awareness of motorcyclists among other motorists continues to gain momentum, and the group hopes to take the project statewide. When Mike Halvorson, representing a local chapter of ABATE, approached the Silver Lake Village Board about accepting the donation of two of the motorcycle awareness signs and placing them on appropriate village roads,

the board accepted the donation of the signs. The blue, reflective signs say Look Twice, Save a Life and have a graphic of a motorcyclist. Our feeling is if they are looking out for us they are looking out for the bikes and pedestrians too, Halvorson said. The ABATE group has now reached agreement to place signs in several other area cities, and placing the signs on county highways has also been endorsed by the Kenosha County Highway Department director. FROM THE GUNNYS SACK: CALIFORNIA Transponds: California requires a transponder when travelling on toll roads, mounted on your vehicle in a visible location. This is a real problem for motorcycles. Where do you mount the things to be in plain sight? This has been corrected by AB1890, introduced by Assemblyman Jose Solorio. The bill was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown and allows motorcyclists to store their transponders out of sight in a pouch or saddlebags when on toll roads. This reduces the probability of theft from being mounted in a visible location on a motorcycle. EDITORS NOTE: Gunny Hutcheson is retiring at the end of the year after serving nearly 20 years as the AIM Chief of Staff in Oregon for AIM Attorney Sam Hochberg, and everyone at Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (AIM) and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) THANK him for his years of dedication to bikers rights & safety and we wish him All the Best! CHICAGO TEAM LICENSE PLATES AVAILABLE FOR ILLINOIS MOTORCYCLISTS Chicago fans among the states 350,000 motorcyclists now can pay homage to their favorite pro sports teams thanks to a new law signed by Governor Pat Quinn on August 9. Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, a former minor league baseball player in the Cubs organization, will make the new specialty license plates available for North Side fans as well as White Sox fans on the South Side. Bulls, Bears and Blackhawks plates also will be offered when pre-orders begin Aug. 24 at www. cyberdriveillinois.com. Money from the sales is earmarked to support schools. More than 18,000 sports team license plates have been sold to people driving cars, vans, pick-ups and other small trucks in less than two years, bringing in almost $800,000 for schools. I am proud to make these license plates available to motorcycle enthusiasts as a means of showing team spirit and further supporting education across the state, White told the Chicago Tribune in announcing his expansion of the sports-plate program to include motorcycles. NADAguides RELEASES LATEST MOTORCYCLE TRENDS The latest data regarding motorcycle shopping and research trends has been released from NADAguides, an online new and used powersports pricing and information resource. And though the economy has yet to recover from the slump, consumer interest and motorcycle sales are gradually increasing. The Motorcycle Industry Council says overall worldwide year-on-year motorcycle sales are up 3.6%, and NADAguides research shows that consumer interest and research has grown 15% in the second quarter of 2012 over the second quarter of 2011. NADAguides says the largest segments receiving growth and interest are trikes and touring scooters with a step-through chassis. Industry

Another Beautiful Day Riding

Written by The Coxs Edited by Lelia, TRM Missouri This story starts with a day I was riding my bike and was approached by Lelia, journalist for Thunder Roads Magazine. She started asking me all kinds of questions and details about my bike and wanted to know if Id mind having it in their magazine. My response to that was absolutely. So here goes This bike started with an Iron Horse Soft Tail frame. It has a 107 SS with a kit, a 6 speed Baker transmission, 3 left side belt drive, 38 degree rake on the front forks and cut rims with a 240 tire. The exhaust is made with Martin Grumpy Grandma pipes. The detailed airbrushing was done over glossy black paint. The paintings are mirrored off an old Molly Hatchet album cover, painted by Peter Weber. The leather is made with alligator seats, grips and 2 alligator bags made by Biker Brothers Leather. All this with the air ride makes it fast, loud and comfortable. For an old man like me to put 100 miles per day, 5 days a week and it still turns heads and photographs very well.

Have you ever had one of those days where things just keep going wrong no matter what you do? We all have, and this summer has been going like that for me. The fuel injector on my Road King quit working, and I started having some problems with both my shoulder and right arm, and my right hip that required me to have MRIs to see if I might have a pinched nerve or other problems. Well the MRIs showed that my shoulder, arm, and hip were something that could be dealt with rather easily, but while they were checking me out they discovered a tumor in my thyroid. Well, having my thyroid removed because two biopsies determine the tumor to be suspicious and probable for cancer is not how I planned on ending the summer. But as I write this article I am less than a week away from surgery. Now for some good news: By the time you read this I will be up on my feet and ready to for the scenic autumn rides that are just about to come our way! This summer has not gone the way I wanted it to but at least I know that no matter what happens God is in control! If my bike was running I would have been out there riding when my arm and hip problems occurred and it would have been difficult for me to handle the bike, putting me at risk for an accident. Had those problems not been there I would never have been in the MRI to have my tumor discovered. See where Im going here? I am sure that some of you have had your share of problems this summer. In fact, some of you might be looking at difficulties going back the entire year. Let me assure you that you can trust God to get you through whatever it is you are facing. I am reminded of the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the book of Daniel. These three young men were cast into a fiery furnace because of their faith in God. But their faith was rewarded and they were miraculously rescued. In fact, when King Nebuchadnezzar looked into the furnace he saw them walking around unharmed with a fourth person who he described as looking like the son of God. If those three young men can trust God in that circumstance then I believe that I can trust God in my situation. And you can too. Its true that we may not experience a miracle but we can be certain that God will be there with us to help us through whatever problems we are facing. And a miracle is not out of the question either. Believe me, I have seen and experienced things that cannot be described as anything else. As we begin riding into autumn remember to put your trust in Jesus no matter what is going on around you. As followers of God we are not going to be exempt from problems. After all, we live in a world full of troubles and testing, so it is only natural that some of it comes our way. But remember the words of W.T. Purkiser who said, God does not offer us a way out of testings in life. He offers us a way through them, and that makes all the difference. And always remember that even when things look like they are too much for us to handle that no situation is too much for God. Enjoy the cooler weather as you get out on the highways and byways enjoying the beauty of Gods creation and keep watch for an old biker with a fresh smiley face scar on his throat cuz I plan on being out there too cancer free and praising God. Steve Koontz of Fighting Chance Customs has always wanted to build a tribute bike to the Huey Helicopter. The Huey has certainly become the most recognizable helicopter in the world. One of the many uses of the Huey was for MedEvac purposes. As a result, the bike was appropriately named, Help From Above. When he spoke with the people at the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation in Custer, South Dakota, he shared his thoughts with them. They agreed that the Help From Above Bike would be a great fit for their fundraising efforts and at the same time be a great honor to a vehicle that has helped so many of our service men and women. Each year the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation raffles a motorcycle in early September to raise funds for the construction of the worlds largest mountain sculpture. The raffle this year is for a 2003 Indian Chief Roadmaster with

For more information about raffle ticket sales and details about the fundraising benefit, you can call (605) 673-4681 or send an e-mail to memorial@crazyhorse.org. Steve delivered and unveiled the Help From Above Bike during the 2012 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. It is now on display at the welcome center of the Memorial. While he was there, the film crew for WorldRiderZ TV show was on location filming. Look for the Help From Above Bike during the show which is to air in early 2013 on the Discovery Channel. Bright Lights Prevent Roadkill: How to smoke a racoon at 25 feet
The color or temperature is particularly important should you decide to use High Intensity Display (HID) lighting. HID uses a transformer to generate much higher voltage to operate a bulb much like a fluorescent light works. This transformer/ballast unit requires good wiring as well as a relay in the By Wayne Tripp system to keep from overloading the stock harness. HID bulbs also need a Power-Tripp Performance, Inc. special reflector and projection lens to focus the beam for best results. But Most motorcycle headlights are OK. Thats about the best I can say about not all HID units are the same. You tend to get what you pay for with these them. If you ride at night, the stock light pattern and brightness can leave you systems, but retrofitting HID to non-HID reflectors/lenses (even halogen projectors) may not always work as intended. For this reason I tend to prefer wanting more. This month we will dive into the lighting part of the electrical system and work on improving lighting output for night time riding, as well as simply upgrading the wiring, reflector and halogen bulb for most of my personal bikes. This will nearly seem to singe the fur off a deer or possum for being better noticed in daylight conditions. Lets start with the stock wiring harness. Manufacturer bean counters tend unfortunate enough to near the edge of the road in front of me at night. And to hold the harness to the bare minimum of wire gauge (diameter) and length bright headlights tend to deter more than a few from venturing out on the road. This is still completely DOT legal with two to three times more lumens to keep the cost of the harness down with copper costs being what they are compared to stock. today. Even the copper used may be recycled and of lower copper purity Below is a basic wiring schematic for improving headlight wiring on dual in the wire used than many know. Copper purity percentage is becoming headlights. Single headlight systems are very similar. For those that are not a big issue today as many motorcycle and automotive manufacturers are up to making a simple harness, aftermarket companies like Eastern Beaver discovering with harness, stator/alternator, and starter wire/windings that sell specific as well as universal harnesses that will fit your bike. are not always conforming to standards specified and required. This means Headlight adjustment is not hard, and having well adjusted headlights that the wire has more resistance and does not produce or carry voltage can make riding even more enjoyable and more safe. Simple hold the bike (especially direct current DC voltage) nearly as well as it should. With lighting, a small reduction in the voltage due to wire resistance causes a large drop in upright and measure to the center of the headlight bulb or projector. Measure lighting output. This also increases the load on the wire and connections that a flat ground 25 feet away against a wall or garage door, and center the headlight beam or projector cut-off line 4 inches lower than the center-line of generates heat that can melt stock plastic wire sheathing and connectors. the headlight. Do this with the rider on the bike so that the beam is thrown at Not a good thing. Keeping connections clean and waterproof goes a long the same angle as in actual use. Next, make sure the beam is angled so that way especially in locations near the ocean with corrosion-causing salt in the right edge will project and light up 10-15 feet off the edge of the road. This the air and on the ground. If you check the voltage at the battery with the engine running, and then at will let you see road signs and the edge of the road hazards best. Now, while we are on the subject of wiring, lets take a minute to look at the bulb end of the harness, you should see minimal voltage drop. Unforadding or replacing turn signals, running, and brake lights. If you are going to tunately, this rarely is the case, and most times a volt or two less voltage is use the stock harness for adding lights, make sure you are not overloading actually reaching the headlights. This drastically reduces the output of the it and trying to draw more than it can handle. Yes, LEDs draw less amperstock bulbs in lumens (a unit of measure for light output). This means they can cause as much or more load as the reducing voltage drop to the bulbs. [See the diagram below.] stock bulbs. Also, most shops and dealers carry (or can order) inexpensive Making sure the voltage regulator/rectifier is a modern electronic (MOSconnectors and pins that will plug into the stock connectors, as well as FET) design, and not of the older mechanical shunting (very hot) units can mean as much as a volt and a half more voltage at idle and cruise. I do not care to mention how ket MOSFET units from Ricks Electrics or Electrosport can be purchased as many engine electrical problems I have seen that were caused by the owner incorrectly adding lights to their own bike. It doesnt take much work or cost a direct replacement. These run cooler, last longer, and keep voltage more to do it right, and prevent issues in the future. But you would think just the opconsistent extending stator life. posite from the number of electrical problems we regularly see. Inexpensive Today halogen bulbs are available that produce 50% or 100% more light from the same voltage and current as stock bulbs. Helmet Reform Poker Run Fund Raiser

Saturday, July 28th, was your typical hot & muggy summer day in central Virginia. But that didnt stop the crowd from turning out to participate in the poker run we organized to raise money for the looming fight to make helmet usage a choice in the Commonwealth. After paying out $300 in cash for a full house drawn by Mike Harlow of Amelia Va., we were still able to donate a pretty good wad to the war chest. I would like to thank the crew at Twisted Grip Cycles in Amelia C.H.. Chris Robbins, Richard Keyser and Adam Mitterer, for all their help with this event. I would also like to thank all the volunteers that worked this fundraiser and most importantly the riders who came out to show their support for helmet reform. This event was put together on a whim by a loose knit group of friends. I encourage all of you reading this article to go out and do whatever you can to support VCOM and the firm of McGrath & Danielson as they lead the charge for we the people and make riding in Virginia more enjoyable for all of us. The Fight for the Rights of Motorcyclists is about more than Helmets
Every January when the Virginia General Assembly meets, motorcyclists around the state begin talking about the laws being considered that affect motorcyclists in Virginia. For many, that means the dreaded helmet statute. On this issue, motorcyclists are deeply divided. Many firmly believe that they should have the right to choose for themselves whether or not to wear a helmet. Others firmly believe that it is an important law that needs to remain in effect. Many helmet law opponents view those who wish the law to stay in place as nannies that are violating their right to choose, while helmet law supporters look at the other side as reckless and irresponsible. However both sides share a common misconception that is shared by many members of the General Assembly and the public at large; and that is that the term motorcyclists rights is a euphemism for helmet reform. For that reason many motorcyclists do not become involved in legislative efforts to better motorcycling. For helmet reform supporters, they fail to get involved due to being discouraged over years of perceived failure. For helmet law supporters, their failure to become involved is due to their desire to see the law remain in place. Both sides are wrong. The fight for the rights of motorcyclists is about much more than helmets, and in Virginia, it is an ongoing fight that is that has seen some disappointments, but has also seen many victories that have benefited all motorcyclists in the commonwealth. Over the years, the Virginia Coalition of Motorcyclists, with the help of other motorcyclists rights organizations, motorcycle clubs, and individual motorcyclists, have facilitated significant changes to laws affecting motorcycling in Virginia. None of these changes have had a thing to do with helmets. Among these accomplishments are the following: Opening up the HOV lanes to motorcycles. Mandating the marking of steel plates which are used in roadway construction and constitute a danger to motorcyclists who are unaware of them until they find themselves on a wet piece of steel Changing the statute governing motorcycle learners permits to make it comparable to that of automobile drivers. Gaining funding for the Virginia Rider Training Program

The establishment of a motorcycle seat (currently held by Tom McGrath) on the Commonwealth Transportation Safety Board Assisted in the establishment of the Governors Motorcycle Advisory Counsel Eliminating the handlebar height restriction Promulgating Section 33.1-13.1 of the Code of Virginia which prohibits the imposition of any requirement of which restricts the access of motorcycles and motorcyclists to any highway, bridge, tunnel, or other transportation facility. Adding motorcycle awareness to the high school drivers education curriculum Amending state code to allow motorcyclists to use headsets for communication purposes. Successfully eliminating numerous proposed pieces of legislation which would have been detrimental to Virginia motorcyclists These are but a few of the accomplishments in the Virginia motorcyclists rights front. Every motorcyclist in Virginia has benefited from these accomplishments regardless of their stance on helmets. However, none of these would have been possible without the help of individual riders who were willing to roll up their sleeves for the betterment of Virginia motorcycling. I would invite every motorcyclist to become involved in protecting our chosen sport, activity, passion, or any other word you may use to describe your own two wheeled addiction. Spend a day pounding yard signs for candidates who share your views on the subject or become involved in a SMRO (State Motorcycle Right Organization). There are numerous ways to become involved, as there are numerous excuses not to. However, one excuse that does not fly is that motorcyclists rights means helmet reform. In Virginia it has never been just about helmets and it never will be. It is about protecting our rights, and improving motorcycling for our enjoyment, and for the enjoyment of those down the road. If you have any further questions or comments concerning this article or any other matters concerning your rights as a motorcyclist in Virginia, please contact me at 1-800-3218968 or at matt@tommcgrathlaw.com

Helmet Reform 2013 Support Your Right To Choose

30 of the 50 states in the U.S. have repealed their mandatory helmet laws and have given riders 21 years of age and older, the right to choose whether to wear a helmet or not while riding. Virginia is one of the 20 states that has yet to release the freedom of choice for adult riders. This isnt about being against wearing a helmetbut against Mandatory Helmet LAWS. Most of you who are registered motorcycle riders dont have any idea that you have guardian angelsnot the kind with wings & a harp. You may not see them but rest assured, they are there for you 365 days out of the year. They are VCOM. VCOM is the only state-based alliance of bikers in Virginia dedicated to defending and promoting all the issues that concern you as a motorcyclist on and off the road personal liberty, safety, freedom of expression, political recognition, and respect. This mission is a full time job. Many of the improved road conditions and freedoms that you enjoy on the road today are from their hard work throughout each year. Visit vcomonline.org for more info on their efforts. In January 2013, VCOM is heading to Richmond with Future Law, a top notch lobby group, that has been hired to represent Virginia & fight for Helmet Reform for Virginias motorcyclists. This is very costly but necessary to take the best shot ever at getting Virginias helmet law repealed. VCOM needs your support It has been suggested that if everyone donates at least $10, that will help tremendously. Businesses, clubs & organizations are encouraged to hold rides or fundraisers to help out. Tom McGraths Motorcycle Law Group will match all contributions up to $25,000. We know motorcyclists can raise money. We do it all the time for charities. We now need to do it for ourselves. $10 is all it takes to help.

Donations can be made out to the following: Virginia Coalition of Motorcyclists PO Box 4851 Richmond, VA 23220
Make sure that you include the contact information of the contributor. Also make sure that you indicate that the money is for helmet reform. VCOM has contributors who do not believe in helmet reform and out of respect we will not use their contributions in this effort.

STURGIS, A ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE!

The day we had been waiting for all summer finally arrived, Friday, August 3rd. Time to hit the road to Sturgis, SD. I felt like a kid on Christmas morning! Vtwin and I had been preparing and anticipating this trip since last year. We kept saying One Day and finally decided that day had to be now. We are not promised tomorrow let alone next year so if you have been using the Maybe next year excuse, stop and think about how badly you want to experience Sturgis. Neither of us had ever been to Sturgis and we really wanted to cross this one off our bucket list. Being so excited, we drove straight through, toy hauler in tow. The trip is about 29 hours. Youll need a few items to drive straight there without stopping. At the top of the list put 5 hour energy shots, followed by plenty of energy drinks, and caffeine no matter if it is coffee or sodas. I entertained myself with a smart phone app that my friend Pennee shared with me. The app kept me entertained however, it drove Vtwin up the wall. No matter, it served its purpose and kept us both either entertained or annoyed. Now that we have all we need to keep us awake for the trip lets hit the road. Once we arrived in Sturgis, Saturday August 4th the first item was to get to our campground and get some shut eye until the evening rolled around. We stayed at Ranch Lamphere Campground in close proximity of both Full Throttle Saloon and The Buffalo Chip. It is a great clean campground centrally located only minutes from downtown Sturgis. I would recommend this campground to anyone. We had a wonderful experience and would go

back again. First night at Sturgis was spent visiting Full Throttle Saloon. We had heard that Saturday night was a big night there and wanted to experience it ourselves. First thing we noticed is there is so much more detail to Full Throttle Saloon than has ever been shown on the television show aired by TrueTV. We immediately recognized quite a few people from the show. Needless to say I began my mission of meeting them and getting a few photo ops. During our visit that night and throughout the week we caught some wonderful performances. Some of the acts were Cinderella, Travis Tritt, Tanya Tucker and Colt Ford, and of course Jackyl. Another band we enjoyed was Blandini. I actually got one of the drummers drum sticks after it come flying from the stage within inches of us. Vtwin wrote the name of the band on it and Surgis 2012 so I could add it to my collection of souvenirs. I also have pictures of me with Angie, Goat, Jessie and quite a few other staff members. We had fun watching the film crews walk around and at times run to catch something happening for the new series. Several times we ended up being a part of the film antics so if you watch the next season you may spot us. When a member of the midget wrestling team was dancing in a cage I decided he needed a tip. Next thing we see is a bright light and a crew filming me putting the dollar in his shorts. When we noticed the film and security crew walking together clearing the way for someone we headed in that direction. It was Jerry Springer. As he walked by us he looked over at Vtwin and said, How

are you? Vtwin looked shocked to say the least. He replied and Jerry walked on. We had a great time! The Full Throttle Saloon entrance fee was basically returned with a buy one get one free drink ticket. The drink ticket was on the end of the entrance card. Some people were just throwing the tickets down after they entered. Each time we found one we got more drinks. Vtwin stopped drinking after only 2 so that meant I had way too many. When I was walking around with 2 beers at once Vtwin began giving the coupons he found to others. It was a lot of fun, we really hope to go back in a few years. Sturgis, SD has a lot of daytime rides and sightseeing trips that are a must. We met up with a few friends from Alabama and spent an entire day riding. We visited Crazy Horse, Mt. Rushmore and even took a break along the way in the city of Deadwood. Deadwood had its main street closed to only bikes. It is a beautiful small town with lots to see and do during the Sturgis Rally. Not only did all the surrounding Harley Shops have vendors and specials but so did a lot of other places. Be sure to take lots of extra cash to get some of the great deals they offer at the rally and surrounding areas. There were so many other sites we wanted to visit but ran out of time. We spent an entire day and evening walking around downtown Sturgis. We visited Easy Riders Saloon and enjoyed some of the free entertainment by many bands. We ate a terrific meal of fried beef tips and fries at the Loud American Roadhouse. They absolutely melt in your mouth and are unbeliev-

ably tender. While eating we experienced more free entertainment by a great band. We found plenty of night life in Sturgis without having to pay the high concert prices charged for named bands playing at so many of the private campgrounds. Dont feel you have to have a ton of cash to have a great time. There is plenty of free entertainment provided by local saloons for all musical tastes. I will remind everyone that when planning a trip to another state it will be in your best interest to check the laws of that state concerning biking and licensure. We always make sure we do this to be sure our bikes are within the laws of that state because they have to be no matter where your tag is registered. We did not have any issues with local law enforcement ourselves but have heard from many that received tickets and or fines for issues such as protective eye wear, handle bar height limitations, and proper license endorsement just to name a few. It is unfortunate that they received these fines however, the local law enforcement is there to try to keep us all safe and when we visit their state we must abide by their laws. Sturgis is certainly a once in a lifetime experience and so much to do and see you have to add it to your list and be sure to not keep putting it off. Get it planned and go for it before there is no more tomorrows. We did and now have the memories to cherish together. Vtwin and Harleygirl
