A student union in the modern situation is a kind of monopoly having exclusive rights in providing vital services for people dependent on this association. And as every monopoly, it rather hinders further development and decrease the quality of service, which is further established through the statement of Thomas which states organizations which depend on the funds of people by virtue of compulsion, tend to become lethargic, which suggests that the security in the source of funding by the knowledge that, no matter how poorly the student union is run, there will still be funding, which decreases accountability, efficiency and productivity of student unions. Thomas, M., Unionism, Brackman, Melboume, 1999, p 54. 2. By the practice of obligatory membership many people were involved in controversial political activities, despite the fact that political activity is not one of the objectives of student unions at all. As not only are the political preferences of people studying in universities different, but also their interests and economical needs, for which the student unions are designed. Pyne, C., Higher Education legislation, Harvey press, Melboume, 1999, p 78. 3. Student unions often rejected official channels and attempted to win policy decisions through strikes and sit-ins, as in the case of the Hock Lee Bus strike, which began in April 1955 and continued until May 12. As a result of the strike, the bus company was forced to dissolve its in-house yellow union and reinstate sacked strikers.
