Whenever you add two numbers with different symbols you are actually subtracting the second number from the first number.

When adding numbers of different signs you make both the numbers positive and then subtract the smaller number from the positive number.
When adding two numbers of the same signs you normally add the numbers together. If they are two negative numbers you still normally add them just make sure your final product has a negative sign.
