Product Design
Product Design is concerned primarily with the relationship
between products and systems and those who use them. The
Product Design programme at NID inculcates a user-centred
approach and processes. Responsibility and concern towards
the social, physical and ecological environment is emphasized
in the process of developing innovative ideas. The Product
Design programme commences with inputs in elements of
three-dimensional form, ergonomics (human factors) and
an introduction to the forming of various kinds of materials.
Along with this, students also acquire workshop, technical
drawing and presentation abilities. Emphasis is placed on
learning through participation and teamwork. Design projects
start in the very frst semester and continue throughout the
programme, forming the core of a product designers education.
These projects gradually increase in their level of complexity and
cover a variety of situations that product designers are likely to
encounter in their professional careers. Projects are supported
by theoretical inputs in structures and strength of materials,
technical studies, production processes, as well as ergonomics.
In addition to courses in design, technology and ergonomics,
specifc courses develop general awareness of areas relevant to
product design. These are History of Design, Information Theory,
Computer-Aided Design, Design Management and Marketing,
Value Engineering and Systems Thinking. An important
component of the programme is the exposure to various levels
of the manufacturing industry through feld visits and projects.

Transportation & Automobile Design
Transportation is an indispensable need of humanity and the
basic power of any economy, and is essential for survival today.
Transportation as understood at NID includes not only cars and
other vehicles or off road vehicles but also vehicles on tracks,
water vessels and other mobility devices and equipments. In
India, where there is still a value base for resource conservation
and adopting one product for multipurpose use, transportation
of both people and goods has many co-existing modes.
Transportation in India so far has been technologically
driven with minimum or little attention paid to the users
needs in terms of comfort, safety, information and even the
considerations of cultural sensitivities and preferences. In the
context of an emerging market economy in India, it is essential
to strengthen basic infrastructure facilities. Transportation is
one of the most important links towards this end.
Designers have a very important contribution to make
towards the way they make objects in our environment work,
and in turn, infuence our perception towards them. This
course seeks to establish a credible relationship of products
and services with the user, technology and environment. The
course aims to train young professionals with a thorough
grounding in the systems approach to holistic problem solving
processes, a sensitivity of concerns towards the environment
and needs of different user groups.
The objectives of this Programme are to develop an
understanding of the feld of Transportation Design with
respect to the discipline of Industrial Design and to develop
skills in analysis, concept generation, formulation of design
strategies, problem solving, product detailing, communication
and teamwork.

Furniture & Interior Design
The Furniture and Interior Design programme provides an
integrated approach to furniture as a part of living, work-
spaces, habitat, challenges and defnes the boundaries of
such objects in systems context. The programme focuses on
the development of students creative faculties by encouraging
experimentation with new materials and processes with due
concern for material conservation. The programme ensures
that students are able to perform at all levels of production,
from industries engaged in batch production of furniture in
various materials, mass production industries, to the small
scale and craft sectors. Lectures, workshop practice and feld
studies, along with other design disciplines introduce students
to various materials and their properties, as well as their
engineering and production principles. From an early stage
in the programme, a variety of design projects encourage the
development of individual potential through an experimental
approach. Practical experience of working with materials like
wood, metal and plastics is encouraged. Emphasis is placed on
the detailing of furniture elements, keeping in mind man-object
relationships and on the process of formal integration at the
furniture construction level. Exposure to both craft and mass
production techniques is given through feld study and industry
visits. Building prototypes wherever possible validates design
solutions. The context and inter-relationship of the furniture
and furniture systems in living, commercial, public spaces and
lifestyles are constantly explored.

Ceramic & Glass Design
Ceramic and Glass Design program at NID takes inspiration
from both art and craft traditions and it equally recognizes and
lay emphasis on the production potential of these materials.
The curriculum at NID offers a set of courses to introduce not
only technological and skill aspects of the materials but also
a wide range of courses such as elements of forms, color and
composition, ergonomics etc. to sensitize students towards the
other essentials of design. Moreover, design projects spread
over the semesters bring in a critical understanding of user
perception, socio-cultural context and market reality for the
future designers.
Extensive exposure provided in the craft sector as well as
ceramic and glass industries bring in awareness of a wider
range of production techniques. Students get hands on
experience of a variety of forming techniques in both the
materials. They get to experience hand moulding techniques in
clay such as coiling, pinching, throwing etc., as also moulding
and casting as production methods. Students also explore
their creative expressions through kiln formed glass such as
slumping, fusing and pate de verre and practice glass blowing
as part of hot glass in the curriculum.
Besides existing linkages with large scale industries, the
discipline has established an important alliance with the clusters
of small scale industries located in several parts of the country
such as Firozabad, Khurja, Jaipur, Morbi etc. The association
and exposure through these clusters provide a platform to the
graduate to utilize the clusters production capacity for their own
creative expression and entrepreneurial venture for the national
as well as export markets.

Graphic Design
A graphic design student, in addition to a thorough grounding
in design abilities and theoretical issues, undertakes the study
of the cultural and historical context in which designers need
to function, as well as the social and ethical factors that
infuence design decisions. The ultimate aim is to stimulate
the development of independent critical judgment, sound
research skills, the ability to think creatively and practice
design as a professional.
The last decade or so has witnessed a near total transfor-
mation in the way a graphic designer works. The expansion
and application of the electronic media has made graphic
reproduction technologies more accessible to the designer.
Paradoxically, traditional skills have become more necessary
than before. Quality and creative solutions contextual to the
users needs are still a basic human input. The fundamental
importance of creating a visual vocabulary through drawing,
the development of aesthetic judgment, values of form,
proportion, image and word have become an integral part
of learning graphic design at NID.
During their period of study, students in graphic design are
encouraged to work on a variety of projects, majoring in the
selected sub-domain of graphic design. The areas covered
include typography & type design, publication design, image
making, illustration, photography, packaging, print design,

New Media Design
The New Media Design programme at NID attempts to critically
examine the relationship between technology and culture.
Media, old and new, such as print, radio, television, internet,
virtual reality, gaming and mobile telephony, to mention a few,
have a profound impact on our culture. Understanding these
various media and the impact they (may) create is crucial to
understanding how our societies are shaped. This aspect is an
essential component of New Media studies.
Students on the New Media programme spend the frst
semester on design fundamentals, which primarily involves
studying various mediums, such as paper or print,
photography, world wide web, along with broader issues in
design such as ergonomics, form and typography. Specifc
inputs in new media studies are imparted and the semester
ends with a design project investigating the application of
new media in a specifc context - for example the role of both
analogue and digital media in classroom education in primary
and secondary schools in India. The subsequent two semesters
focus on design projects investigating the role of various
mediums in, for example, education, healthcare, environment,
craft and heritage preservation. As New Media Designers
who will inevitably deal with the design of digital artefacts,
the students are grounded in the fundamentals of interaction
design. The fourth semester or Diploma, is where an area of
interest, usually in collaboration with industry, is chosen for
research.
The programme is transdisciplinary in nature, applying and
integrating knowledge from various disciplines. In this sense,
it is a unique combination of art, science and technology.
The programme seeks students from diverse backgrounds
ranging from fne and applied arts, architecture, design,
science, engineering or technical backgrounds. A willingness
and motivation to learn various digital skills such as electronics,
software programming, advanced 3D modelling, etc is required.

Strategic Design Management
Design is rapidly becoming the key to differentiation, premium
realisation and brand positioning. The need for strategically
managing design becomes signifcant in the job description
of not only managers but also designers. Since NID has a
spectrum of design faculties and disciplines, a multidisciplinary
approach is more inherent in the scheme of things here
than in any other business school. The Strategic Design
Management programme is aimed at enabling the students
to develop design leadership and entrepreneurial skills, and
empower them to become wealth creators in the feld. The
programme will help students to generate strategies that
enable the use of design for creating desired value, perception
and differentiation.
As a design manager, a person is involved with strategies, action
plans and processes. Critical functions such as innovation, new
product development, packaging, retail impact, competitive
analysis, design measurement, sustainability and customer
delight issues are in the ambit of the Design Manager. It also
involves design research, scenario building and trend forecasting,
creating a right design mix, branding and design communication
strategies. Students who complete the programme successfully
will be well equipped to enter any industry or consultancy as
strategic designers, design entrepreneurs, design managers,
contributing either as team members or as team leaders.

Information & Interface Design
Information and Interface Design programme is aimed at
providing the students with adequate knowledge and training,
which will enable them to design effective and accessible
products for a wide range of audience and media from print
to digital, from education to artifcial intelligence. Students will
have to document management skills to understand issues in
the storage, access, retrieval and navigation of information plus
the analytical skills, knowledge of methodology and usability
techniques to measure product effectiveness. Information
design is concerned with making complex information easier
to understand and to use. It is a rapidly growing discipline
that draws on graphic design, applied linguistics, psychology,
computing sciences, cognitive ergonomics, information and
communication science.
This multidisciplinary programme has great relevance for
knowledge and information based industry. Information Design
is focused on users and is committed to fnd out whether
its products actually achieve their objectives. The feld of
information design applies traditional and evolving design
principles to the process of translating complex, unorganised
or unstructured data into valuable meaning information. User
centered information design is the goal of the information and
digital design discipline. Students who complete the programme
successfully could work at the level of strategic information
designers in the sectors like information technology, health
care, electronics, agriculture, hospitality, tourism, transportation,
gaming and GIS based application designs.

Design for Retail Experience
The Design for Retail Experience PG programme offered at NID
R&D Campus, Bangalore, was started in the year 2007. It has
an integrated approach to designing products, systems and
spaces to accommodate multi sensory experiences in the retail
and visual merchandising felds in the context of enhanced
user experience. The programme offers a challenge to redefne
boundaries, understand consumer lifestyles and aspirations in
order to visualize and create new concepts for an outstanding
shopping experience.
Projects in this programme would cover retail store designs
for small and big organized retail sectors alike (branding,
brand promotion, lighting, exhibition design etc.). A profound
understanding of materials, hardware and technology,
documentation and feld research through live interactions with
industry, and understanding retail as a part of system design,
are also areas of focus. Visual Merchandizing, System Design,
Visualization of Space, Elements of Form and Colour, and
Photography are other areas covered.
Why Design for Retail Experience? Retail Design as a profession
is gaining a good degree of recognition from the Retail
industry and has established itself within the country. With
the major changes in the Indian Economy this has become
an area of expertise to the large variety of retail industries.
Market competition is intense and a great degree of fexibility is
demanded to sustain the day to day changes in the market.
learning Process The process of learning includes interaction
with the industries in various ways. Seminars and workshops
conducted with people from the industry act as a great exposure
for students to explore and learn recent techniques, materials,
and trends in the market. They are further introduced to
professional designers from the industry and hence are able to
comprehend and understand the position design has in todays
market through live class room activities. Industrial feld visits,
and training as well as sponsored research based projects are yet
more instances of the learning process at NID.

Design for Digital Experience
We use a number of digital products and applications in
our daily life at home, school, offce, for being informed,
communication, education, entertainment, banking,
healthcare etc. Being a Design and R & D institute, we looked
at this programme in the context of Design and intend to
focus on research based outcomes and focus on Design
Research. We perceive Digital experience and design as
encompassing the following broad areas:
_ Software products and services
(e-products that are application based)
_ Gaming & Entertainment
_ Digital Knowledgeware
(Digital libraries, Virtual museums, e-learning etc)
_ Digital products
(handheld gadgets and devices)
The four broad areas provide the thematic context for
projects as well as courses in each semester. Each student is
encouraged to explore each of these areas through project-
based approach with supporting theoretical inputs. Realistically
students will have worked on a single project in each of these
areas, making them essentially generalists. The kind of diploma
project taken up in the fnal semester will take the student
towards being a specialist in his/her area of interest.
The various course modules for this programme can be broadly
categorized into those that focus on design processes for the
development of design concepts, prototyping and evaluation.
Another set of courses look in the area of enriching content
from aspects such as narration styles, use of appropriate media,
interactivity etc. In the implementation of the projects students
also need to develop their programming skills. A course titled
Digital Design and Society emphasizes on research to create
a knowledgebase with regards to usage of Digital products in
Indian society and inform in context of future design directions
keeping in mind Indian socio-cultural aspects.
