Big Ben
Big Ben is the nickname for the bell in the clock thats in the end of the Palace of Westminster in London. Very often this clock has a different nickname, actually people like to call him clock tower, because the clock has faces. Big Ben is the largest clock tower in the world. This clock started to work on May 31-1859. The clock tower is 96 metres high. Big Ben its one of the most famous tourists attraction in the world. This tower doesnt have elevator so the visitors must climb the 334 stairs if they want to reach the top. This clock was designed by Augustus Pugin. The clock faces are framed and at the base of each clock face there is the Latin sentence: Domine Salvam Fac Reginam Nostram Victoriam Primam and that means: O, Lord keep safe our Queen Victoria the First. The designers of Big Ben were Edmund Beckett Denison, and George Airy. The nickname Big Ben is the subject of a debate. First, people like to name the clock after Sir Benjamin Hall or after Benjamin Caunt. Now the nickname Big Ben is used for the tower and the bell also. The sound of the bells has been used in audio media. Big Ben is a focus of New Years celebration with sounds of the bells that are showing welcome to the New Year. The clock has become the most famous symbol of the United Kingdom and London also.
