Problem statement (ENGE 1024 Engineering Exploration Virginia Tech 2010-2011, Pg.143, Problem# ICA 4) The problems talks about two cargo trains each leaving their respective stations at 1:00 pm and approaching each other, one traveling west at 10 miles per hour and the other on separate tracks traveling east at 15 miles per hours. The stations are 100 miles apart. Find the time when the trains meet and determine how far the eastbound train has traveled. Sketch 15 miles per hour 100 miles 10 miles per hour

Train 1

Train 2

Objective The objective of this problem is to find the time when the trains meet and determine how far the eastbound train has traveled. Observations The trains will have different distances from the start point due to their different speeds List of Variables and Constants Time measured in hours (x), Distance measured in miles (y) Equations (Velocity 1) + (Velocity2) = Total distance The trains will meet at 5:00 pm since it takes 4 hours to meet each other. How far did the trains go?

Manipulations 15x + 10x = 100

25x = 10 x = 4 hours Train 1 Y = 15 x Y = 15(4)

Train 2 Y = 10x Y = 10(4) Y = 40 miles from the right to the left

Y = 60 miles from the left to the right
