Head out for a day of enhanc-
ing and developing trails and sign
posting efforts with the Cherry
Hill Environmental Board
(CHEB) on Saturday, Sept. 29 from
9 a.m. to noon.
The volunteer activities will
take place on historic Croft Farm,
which is off of Brace Road and
Bortons Mill Road, and is the
home of the arts center and Kay-
Evans House.
National Public Lands Day is
an effort spearheaded through a
National Environmental Educa-
tion Foundation (NEEF) pro-
gram, which is based in Washing-
ton, D.C.
There is no fee to attend.
According to Lew Gorman,
chairman of Cherry Hill Town-
ships Environmental Board, the
event is an effort to connect peo-
ple with nature and to do some
hands on work on our public
lands.
The township has participated
in the national event for several
consecutive years, he said.
In the past, weve had multi-
ple locations, he said. This year,
well be at Croft Farm.
The trails that wind through
the farm were designated from
the U.S. Department of the Interi-
or as National Recreation Trails
last year.
Thats shown on the Ameri-
can Trails website, said Gor-
man.
A talk by Mike Hogan on inva-
sive species will commence the
day of projects.
The hope from officials is to
share why it is important to care
about the environment.
People have a sense of mean-
ing to their work, Gorman ex-
plained.
There are approximately 20
acres of open space land on the
farm, he said, and it is public
land.
Public lands belong to the
public, he said.
Projects will be adapted de-
pendent on how many people at-

Warren W. Faulk reported a resi-
dent of Cherry Hill was sen-
tenced Friday, Aug. 31, for the
killing of a Cherry Hill man at a
party in 2011.
Superior Court Judge Samuel
Natal sentenced Naqueebullah
Habibi, 20, of the 800 block of
Cooper Landing Road in Cherry
Hill, to a 17-year term in a New
Jersey state prison.
He must serve 85 percent of
that sentence before he is eligible

correction
An article that ran in the Sept.
5 through Sept. 12 edition of the
Cherry Hill Sun incorrectly re-
ferred to Brian Adler as the direc-
tor for the Jewish Community
Centers Sports Award Dinner.
Adler is the Director of Fundrais-
ing and Development.
Mayor Chuck Cahn released
the following statement on the
Cherry Hill-Merchantville merg-
er on Thursday, Sept. 6:
First, it is important to clarify
that the future of the Cherry Hill-
Merchantville consolidation
study is in the hands of the inde-
pendent commission. That com-
mission includes members of
both communities and, again,
functions independently of both
municipalities and their govern-
ing bodies.
It is my understanding that the
members of that commission
have decided not to move forward
with this effort at this time.
As Mayor, I speak for the peo-
ple of Cherry Hill. I do not believe
sufficient support exists within
this township to pursue a study,
and I cannot commit taxpayer
dollars to fund this endeavor.
With that said, it is certainly
the commissions right to inde-
pendently seek funding and study
the issue if they so choose.
In that case, I would absolutely
be willing to review the results of
that study, if and when it might
be presented to me.
Ultimately, the decision to con-
solidate would rest in the hands
of the people of Cherry Hill and
Merchantville.
At this time, my administra-
tion is focused on working with
Merchantville to identify shared
service opportunities that would
benefit both of our communities
moving forward.

With vacations behind us, many people
are getting back to the grind of day-to-day
life. In the midst of everything else going
on in our busy lives, its sometimes easy to
lose track of whats really important, par-
ticularly when it comes to our health.
Thats where my Mayors Wellness Cam-
paign comes in. As Ive written in the past,
Mayors Wellness is all about incorporat-
ing healthy habits into our daily lives. That
doesnt mean setting lofty goals to lose a lot
of weight, or starting some extreme diet or
exercise routine; rather, its taking smaller,
common sense steps to improving our-
selves.
The goal of the program is education;
its about giving residents access to re-
sources and programs that they will find
enjoyable and valuable.
In the coming months, the township is
partnering with other organizations in the
community to present a variety of pro-
grams many that are free of charge that
aim to educate,
while making
healthy living ac-
cessible and, of
course, fun.
On Wednesday,
Sept. 19, we will
kick off our Walk
with the Mayor
series at the Cher-
ry Hill Mall. From
8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on
the third Wednes-
day of every
month, I am invit-
ing residents and their friends and family
members to come out to the Grand Court
(near Nordstrom) and take the roughly
two-mile walk around the malls interior
with me. While there, participants can take
our pledge to get active, enjoy healthy re-
freshments, and enter for a chance to win a
prize.
Later this month, the Katz JCC will
launch an exciting new program, called
Girls on the Run. A subsidiary of a nation-
al organization by the same name, Girls on
the Run is intended to build self-esteem
and self-awareness among girls ages 8 to 11.
The 10-week program includes a cur-
riculum of dialogue and running games.
The goal is to encourage friendship, while
offering discussion points that include
emotional health, nutrition, the impor-
tance of rest, positive attitude and person-
al values.
Sessions begin Sept. 23 and are held
twice a week from 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. Sun-
days and 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Thursdays at
the JCC, 1301 Springdale Road. Registra-
tion is $100 for JCC members, and $140 for
non-members.

MAYORS MESSAGE
T
he news from July wasnt great
for Atlantic City: another big
loss in casino win money from
the same month last year.
But, all is not lost, and August prom-
ised to be a bit better because we avoid-
ed a tropical storm, unlike last year.
The state reported that casino rev-
enue was down 9.5 percent from July
2011. That includes a lost weekend
(2011 had five weekends).
But comparing year-over-year data
might not be all that relevant to At-
lantic Citys future. Big wins or loss-
es on the part of high-rolling gam-
blers can make a difference. And the
citys fate really doesnt lie in the
hands of a hot weekend here and
there.
Atlantic Citys future depends on be-
coming a vacation destination for peo-
ple who not only like to gamble, but
also enjoy fine dining, entertainment,
nightlife and more.
The days of relying on busloads of
gamblers from surrounding states to
pay the bills are over. Those buses now
stop at casinos that are located much
closer to the gambers homes. Atlantic
City casinos have registered losses
ever since Pennsylvania opened its
casinos almost six years ago. Pennsyl-
vania gamblers, quite naturally, are
staying closer to home. At least those
who just want to spend a few hours in
front of a slot machine.
Atlantic Citys future is more closely
tied to new ventures, such as the Revel,
which is touting itself as something
much more than just a gambling hall.
That casino is seeing revenue growth.
Maybe not as much or as quickly as all
would like, but, nonetheless, it is grow-
ing.
Atlantic City has to reinvent itself
and thats not an impossible task. It
has to become the East Coast version
off Las Vegas something so grand, so
spectacular that people bypass their
local gambling establishment to expe-
rience something special.
Its on its way. But it wont get there
overnight.
in our opinion
Nothing to revel about
But we like Atlantic Citys efforts to be more than a slot machine parlor
AC might finally get it
Sure the July casino revenue numbers
were down. But a new marketing cam-
paign and other efforts seem to indi-
cate that Atlantic City finally realizes it
has to be something other than a col-
lection of gambling halls.

The Camden
County Recreation
Facility Grant Pro-
gram provides op-
portunities for little
leagues, soccer pro-
grams and a variety
of other local insti-
tutions to expand
and maintain their
facilities. The
grants, funded
through the Cam-
den County Open Space Preserva-
tion Trust Fund, are presented to
local recreation programs that
keep our kids on the field and
youth sports vibrant in our area.
Thanks to this program, key
recreation improvement projects
have been indentified to enhance
the quality of life for residents
across Camden County. In many
cases, these projects would not
have been considered to be under-
taken with strained local resources
and budgets. Every year these
grants are funding important proj-
ects and this year is no different
from ADA improvements to new
bathrooms at our little league
fields throughout Camden County.
Camden County is committed to
preserving our parks, natural
areas and farmland not only for
their scenic value, but for their
continued use and enjoyment. To
ensure that our children, and gen-
erations to come, will have the ben-
efit of these facilities for
perpetuity the Camden County
Open Space Preservation Trust
Fund Advisory Committee was ap-
pointed by the Freeholder Board.
The diverse committee provides
the Freeholder Board with guid-
ance regarding the implementa-
tion of the Open Space
Preservation Trust Fund.
The Freeholder Board approved
the recommendations of the Advi-
sory Committee to award the 2012
Recreation Facility Enhancement
Project Grants at our July meeting.
We are now in the
process of visiting
the municipal or-
ganizations that
have been identified
for funding. This
years applications
represented a wide
range of projects
throughout the
county to keep our
fields green and our
kids active. We ap-
preciate the hard work and plan-
ning that went into each request.
This year, Camden County
Recreation Facility grants will
benefit projects in Audubon, Bell-
mawr, Berlin Borough, Brooklawn,
Camden, Cherry Hill, Chesilhurst,
Clementon, Collingswood,
Gloucester City, Haddon Heights,
Hi-Nella, Laurel Springs, Lawn-
side, Magnolia, Merchantville, Mt.
Ephraim, Pennsauken, Run-
nemede, Stratford and Woodlynne.
These leagues are critical to the
combined character of our shared
community and provide a tremen-
dous service to our towns. The
coaches and parents that make the
thankless sacrifices on a daily
basis to provide our children with
a place to play deserve assistance
with their objectives. They are the
ones that ensure Camden Countys
recreational programs are the best
in the state and this long-term
grant program is our contribution
to their efforts. These are the
places that Olympians get their
start and we should always nur-
ture initiatives that expand and
preserve our youth athletic
leagues.

According to www.publiclands-

teers worked at 2,067 sites around
the nation in 2011. An estimated
23,000 pounds of invasive plants
were collected.
After Hogans talk, dependent
on volunteers, some attendees
will be assigned to remove inva-
sive species while another team
improves the trail surface.
It gets used a lot now, said
Gorman, between youth groups,
schools and parents taking day
trips with their kids. Well adapt
to the projects depending on the
people who show.
A goal of the day, he said, is for
residents to look for things
around them that they otherwise
might not notice.
We want to expose them to
that, he said.
All work will be done in an en-
vironmentally sensitive way,
avoiding erosion, Gorman added,
citing that humans are just the
visitors.
This is an opportunity, he said,
for residents to come out to help
improve and maintain the
open space lands, while
giving them care at the same
time.
Hopefully were enabling and
supporting that national effort to
improve our public lands, he
said.

The South Jersey Land and
Water Trust (SJLWT), a not-for-
profit organization focused on
preserving farmland and protect-
ing watersheds from Camden to
Salem counties, has been working
hard this summer to identify and
remove invasive species from the
wild places of South Jersey.
Serving as the southern arm of
the New Jersey Invasive Species
Strike Team, SJLWT documented
its 1,000th invasive species popu-
lation last week, Chinese Bush-
clover in Wharton State Forest.
Habitat Assessment Coordina-
tor Michael Hogan has led in-
terns Michelle Brown and Trish
Pitcher in our invasive species ef-
forts this summer.
By identifying and removing
invasive species from South Jer-
sey, the SJLWT aids in preserving
the natural landscape of our
woodlands by protecting native
species from blight and other se-
rious impacts.
Such invaders as the gypsy
moth can cause devastating re-
sults on forests.
The SJLWTs invasive species
work continues this fall with
three opportunities for communi-
ty members to get involved in this
project including a walk on Na-
tional Public Lands Day at Bor-
tons Mill on Sept. 29 at 10 a.m.
Learn how to identify invasive
species such as Callery Pear, Chi-
nese Bushclover, Japanese Angel-
ica Tree, Poison Hemlock and
others as well as how to report
their locations to the NJISST dur-
ing a guided tour of these local
parks.
All walks are $3 for non-mem-
