I found many of my books at Sheppard Memorial Library, an elementary school library, as well as online sites.

All of these books reflect upon the Civil War Era, and what it would be like fighting wars and being enslaved during that time.

Polacco, P. (1994). Pink and say. New York: Philomel Books.

During the Civil War, the union loses two teenaged boys. One, a former slave, rescues the other from dying a slow death on the battle field. The two become friends while hiding out and tending to their wounds. The friendship was quick but the memories are forever.

Lewin T. (2001)Red legs : a drummer boy of the Civil War. New York: Harpercollins.

Stephen is only 9 but is surround by men fighting for freedom. He is from the red legs division is thinking about his battle of war the next day. He thinks about home and wishes he was still there. None the less he prepares for his fight and his duties as a drummer boy. Stephen fights and falls for his country but fortunately he is able to go home and enjoy his family with a lesson learned. This book is intended for third graders.

Jones C. (2011) Sarah emma edmonds was a great pretender: the true story of a civil war spy. Minneapolis, MN : Carolrhoda Books.

This is a true story about Sarah who, in 1861 pretended to be a boy named Frank in order to enter the civil war. She began as a nurse but quickly move to a spy for the Union Army. Sarah just wanted to help in any way possible and in doing so she pretended to be many people including an African slave.

Moore A. (1994) If you lived at the time of the civil war. New York: Scholastic

This book asks and answers questions about the civil war in terms that elementary children can understand. It consist of times before and after the war. This book is intended for fourth graders.

Hicks C. (2011) Alvin Fernalds incredible buried treasure. Purple House Press

Alvin Fernald is used to going on adventures but this is the first time that he travels back to visit a boy during the civil war age. He finds a time capsule that helps him with his crusade in time. Along with his best friend and sister; Alvin solves the mystery that lies in the chest. This book is intended for fifth graders.
