English I Pre-AP Animal Farm Project Assigned: Wednesday, September 12th Due: Wednesday, September 19th You must

complete all 3 parts of the project. Part One Option A

It is two years after the book has ended. Napoleon is growing old, but if anything, his rule has grown even fiercer. Rations are down, work is up; the animals have begun work on their fifth windmill, and still no electricity in the stalls! You are a young pig born into this reign. You dont know what the rebellion was like; this life is all you have ever known. But you do have a kind heart, and have taken to occasionally chatting with the lower animals, a practice very much frowned upon by Squealer and his whip-bearing supervisors. One day you strike up a conversation with old Benjamin, the ancient donkey, and as you seem to have a way of drawing people out of their shells, he shares with you the history of his life on the farm. Jones. Old Major. Snowball. The Rebellion. All of it! You are appalled! This only confirms yours suspicions and vague feelings of guilt! You immediately begin planning The Second Revolution. Your assignment is to design and prepare a packet for the lower animals entitled Your Guide to the Next Revolution. In it, you will have to lay out your reasons for rebellion, your plan of attack (remember how powerful the pigs are! What will you do with them all?), your ideal image of the post-revolution farm (i.e. who will lead, what will be different, etc.). You may have to work extra hard to convince the older animals that this will turn out any differently than the other Rebellion. Feel free to include maps, graphs, charts, writing- anything that will convince the animals to go to war with you. Above all, remember that a leader is nothing if not passionate. Tell them why this is worth their time.

Option B
It is the year 2015. Animal Farm is no more. In 1989, a rare skin disease wiped out 98% of the pig population in Great Britain, and after a few months of chaos, Animal Farm, or Manor Farm, was repossessed by the bank, subdivided and converted into a row of monotonous, ironically uncharming, red brick houses. Only the windmills remain. One is a coffee shop, the other an office of the Great Britain Board of Tourism. Most of what happened has been forgotten. Your assignment is to create a museum exhibit for the esteemed Museum of the History of Great Britain. You have been asked to design an extensive spread on the rise and fall of Animal Farm. The museum directors urge you to include documents, diary entries, photographs if any exist, graphs and charts that reveal the rates of production, etc. Search far and wide for materials from all the players involved. (You can bend the truth a bit here. For instance, who are we to say that Snowball didnt keep a diary, or that the pigs did not take pictures of everything that went on?) Enjoy, and be creative!

Part Two Choose one assignment out of the three assignments provided.
Political Cartoon Explain the importance of the following quote: All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others. Now that you have thoroughly explained the quote (what was happening in the novel and the significance of this particular quote), create a political cartoon that shows your understanding of the quote and the major theme(s) developed in the novel. Include a half-page typed explanation of your political cartoon. Laws and Rules Laws and rules are a part of everyone's life. Some are obeyed, some are not, and some are just outright ignored. Some rules are "bent" to help an individual or a group when they are caught disobeying the rules. View the General Information and Code of Conduct from the Fort Bend ISD Student Handbook. Select 4 rules that you think are frequently changed to benefit one student or a group of students. Rewrite these rules (just as Squealer did) to make exceptions for certain people or groups. Place your rewritten rules on a poster board that is well designed and easily readable.

Collage Create a collage that will show your understanding of one of the themes of Animal Farm. The collage should be on a piece of 22 x 28 poster board and must include colored pictures. Include a typed, double spaced explanation of your concept that is approximately one page in length.

Part Three Create an Animal Farm Campaign Poster 1. Choose a character from Animal Farm that should run the farm. 2. Identify character qualities that would make your selection a good leader. 3. Develop a campaign slogan and promises that your character will run under. 4. Create a voting system (How will the animals vote? What are the restrictions for a registered voter?) and day when the voting will take place. This should be provided in writing on the back of your poster. 5. Design a colorful poster with at least ONE 3D element that will have the following essential information: a. Name of candidate b. Picture of candidate c. Slogan of candidate d. At least two campaign promises e. Date of Vote
