1. a) Explain the construction and working of Nicol prism.

(2) b) How will you detect Plane, Circularly and Elliptically polarized light? (1) c) A plane polarized light is incident normally on a quarter wave plate cut with its face parallel to optic axis. Explain, clearly the nature of emergent light in each case when the incident vibrations make angle of 00 , 300 , 450 and 900 with the optic axis. (2) OR a) What is Optical rotation? How shall you measure specific rotation of glucose soln using a bi-quartz polarimeter? (3) b) A quartz plate cut parallel to optic axis 0.25 mm thick. For what values of visible spectrum(=4500 A0 to 8000A0) will it act as (i) Half-wave plate (ii) Quarter wave plate. The difference of refractive indices for E-ray and O-ray is assumed to be constant and equal to (E O) = 0.009 at all wavelength of visible spectrum. (2) 2. a) Explain Compton Scattering. Obtain an expression for the shift in wavelength of the scattered photon due to Compton scattering. (3) b) Find the probability that a particle within a box of width L can be found between x=0 and x=(L/n), when it is in the nth state. (2) OR a) Derive time-dependent and time independent Schrdingers wave equations. (3) b) Calculate such minimum value of the energy of a photon that it may transfer half of its energy to an electron at rest. (2) 3. a) Discuss the phenomenon of Fraunhofers diffraction at a single slit and derive expression for the intensity of diffracted light. (3) (b) How many lines per cm are there in a grating which gives an angle of diffraction of 300 in first order spectrum of light of wavelength 6 X 10-5 cm? OR a) Explain Rayleigh criteria of resolution of two spectral lines of equal intensities giving suitable intensity distribution curves. Deduce an expression for the resolving power of a grating. b) The distance between the first and the sixth minima in diffraction pattern of a single slit is 0.5 mm. The screen is 0.5 m away from the slit. If the wavelength of light used is 5000 A0, determine the slit width. (3+2)
