Summer Reading Program has gained popularity in the last few years, probably due to necessity and to counter act the influence of electronics and games that are now taking all the free time of todays children. The program keeps students active with their reading during summer vacation where they usually just play video games, watch TV, etc. According to Journey Forth (www.bjupress.com), research has proven that regular reading can greatly boost reading skills. So for the whole summer, the program puts books in childrens hands that would provide them the essential tools to guarantee year-long learning achievement. What is the purpose of Summer Reading Program? According to Collaborative Summer Library Program (www.cslreads.org), summer library programs goals are to; develop childrens interests in reading for pleasure, encourage and motivate children to improve their reading skills, encourage use of all library resources, and increase awareness of libraries. Furthermore, according to Kentucky Department for libraries and Archives (www.kdla.ky.gov), it is also to; attract new customers to the library, establish library as part of the community life, create positive publicity for the library, promote community involvement in the mission of the library, establish a partnership with the school community, and increase circulation of library materials.
