Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Fall 2012

Membership: For graduate students. Focus: This is a highly researched, 8-session program that teaches the art of paying attention on purpose to the present moment with nonjudgmental awareness. By paying attention in this way, you can learn to respond to situations with choice rather than reacting automatically. Just as an athlete can train the body, you can train the mind to be less reactive and more balanced. Through different mind-body techniques, participants learn to access inner resources that improve their ability to cope effectively with the stresses of school, work and personal life. Participants who have completed the program notice the following: o Increased ability to cope with stressful situations o Ability to maintain greater emotional balance in the midst of challenges o Enhanced concentration and improved academic performance o Ability to approach school and life with greater energy and enthusiasm This is the same program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn and is the basis for current research on meditation. Class expectations include a commitment attendance to all sessions, developing a daily mindfulness meditation practice and engaging in weekly assignments to integrate concepts into daily life. For students interested in learning more about mindfulness, there will be an orientation session before the course begins. Frequency: Time: Fridays 9:30 -10:50 Orientation October 5 Program begins Oct 19 December 14
