Resolution for the Student Senate September 19, 2012

WHEREAS we pride ourselves on our rich diversity in peoples and cultures; WHEREAS we believe everyone has rights not to be discriminated against, to freedom of expression, to freedom of association and freedom of religion; WHEREAS we value the ability to say and to be who we really are and to love whom we really love on campus and in our communities; WHEREAS we recognize all of the achievements and struggles, now and in our past, in seeking rights where there previously were none; BE IT RESOLVED that the Student Senate of Minneapolis Community and Technical College, representing the students of the most diverse public college in the state of Minnesota, strongly opposes the marriage amendment, which would constitutionally ban same-sex marriage. We will vote on this in the November 6, 2012, election. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Student Senate understands MCTC, as a state institution, cannot take a stance, and that in the course of taking this position, we cannot use Student Life funds campaign this position. Therefore, we are acting solely as a voice of the students. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Student Senate recognizes the rights of religious institutions to determine whether they will perform same-sex marriage ceremonies. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Student Senate calls on the faculty and staff unions of MCTC to join in opposition to the marriage amendment.
