General objectives: By the end of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Define the concepts of health and illness in relation to adult health nursing. 2. Design health care through the use of holistic approach for hospitalized adults. 3. Utilize the nursing process when caring for adults& their families complaining from varies acute, chronic, major & minor conditions. 4. Develop the ability to provide the adults & their families with health education & counseling regarding various health problems.\ 5. Recognize health promotion & prevention of health problems as an important concept in the development of nursing care. 6. Integrate professional, ethical, legal aspect while providing nursing care. 7. Examine the concepts of older people & their families in the home & community, the acute care setting &in a protected environment.

Objectives
Unite one: Assessment of Digestive and Gastrointestinal Function On completion of this chapter 34, the learner will be able to: 1.1.1 Describe the structure and function of the organs of the gastrointestinal tract. 1.1.2 Describe the mechanical and chemical processes involved in digesting and
absorbing foods and eliminating waste products.

On completion of this chapter 39, the learner will be able to: 2.1.1 Identify the metabolic functions of the liver and the alterations in these functions that occur with liver disease. 2.1.2 Explain liver function tests and the clinical manifestations of liver dysfunction in relation to pathophysiologic alterations of the liver. 2.1.3 Relate jaundice, portal hypertension, ascites, varices, nutritional deficiencies, and hepatic coma to path physiologic alterations of the liver. 2.1.4 Describe the medical, surgical, and nursing management of patients with esophageal varices. 2.1.5 Compare the various types of hepatitis and their causes, prevention, clinical manifestations, management, prognosis, and home health care needs. 2.1.6 Use the nursing process as a framework for care of the patient with cirrhosis of the liver. 2.1.7 Compare the nonsurgical and surgical management of patients with cancer of the liver. 2.1.8 Describe the postoperative nursing care of the patient undergoing Liver transplantation. 2.2 Assessment and Management of Patients With Biliary Disorders On completion of this chapter 40, the learner will be able to: 2.2.1 Compare approaches to management of cholelithiasis. 2.2.2 Use the nursing process as a framework for care of patients with cholelithiasis and those undergoing laparoscopic or open cholecystectomy. 2.2.3 Differentiate between acute and chronic pancreatitis. 2.2.4 Use the nursing process as a framework for care of patients with acute pancreatitis. 2.2.5 Describe the nutritional and metabolic effects of surgical treatment of tumors of the pancreas. 2.3 Assessment and Management of Patients With Diabetes Mellitus 5

2.4 Assessment and Management of Patients With Endocrine Disorders. Unite Three: Assessment of Renal and Urinary Tract Function On completion of this chapter 43, the learner will be able to:
3.1.1 Describe the anatomy and physiology of the upper and lower urinary tracts. 3.1.2 Identify the assessment parameters used for determining the status upper and lower urinary tract function. 3.1.3 Describe the diagnostic studies used to determine upper and lower urinary tract function. 3.1.4 Initiate education and preparation for patients undergoing assessment of the urinary system. 3.1.5 Discuss the role of the kidney in regulating fluid and electrolyte balance, acidbase balance, and blood pressure. 3.2 Management of Patients With Upper or Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction. On completion of this chapter 44, the learner will be able to: 3.2.1 Explain the different types of urinary incontinence and their causes. 3.2.2 Compare and contrast urinary retention and urinary incontinence in terms of their clinical manifestations, complications, and medical and nursing management. 3.2.3 Describe the sequence of events leading to urinary tract infection in a patient with an indwelling urinary catheter. 3.2.4 Outline the principles of management of a patient with an indwelling urinary catheter. 3.2.5 Compare and contrast hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis in terms of underlying principles, procedures, complications, and nursing considerations. 3.2.6 Describe nursing management of the hospitalized dialysis patient. 3.2.7 Use the nursing process as a framework for care of patients undergoing 7

3.3 Management of Patients With Urinary Disorders On completion of this chapter 45, the learner will be able to: 3.3.1 Identify factors contributing to urinary tract infections. 3.3.2 Develop a teaching plan for the patient with urinary tract infection. 3.3.3 Compare and contrast pyelonephritis, glomerulonephritis, and the nephrotic syndrome: causes, pathophysiologic changes, clinical manifestations, management, and nursing care. 3.3.4 Describe causes of acute and chronic renal failure. 3.3.5 Use the nursing process as a framework for the care of patients with acute renal failure 3.3.6 Use the nursing process as a framework for the care of patients with chronic renal failure. 3.3.7 Develop a postoperative plan of nursing care and teaching plan for the patient undergoing kidney transplantation. 3.3.8 Describe management strategies for renal calculi (kidney stones). 3.3.9 Develop a teaching plan for the patient undergoing treatment for renal calculi (kidney stones). 3.3.10 Formulate preoperative and postoperative nursing diagnoses for the patient undergoing surgery for urinary diversion. 3.3.11 Describe interstitial cystitis and its physical and psychological effects on the patient.
