The Board is appreciative of its fellow Board members, staff and many volunteers who have given their time and best efforts in the discharge of their duties, and assistance in running the many programmes at the various units of the Board, namely, the Central Sikh Temple (CST), Silat Road Sikh Temple (SRST) and Sikh Centre (SC). The Central Sikh Gurdwara Boards mission is to facilitate both, the learning and practice of the Gurus teachings amongst Sikhs in Singapore. It is our sincere belief that the understanding and practice of the Gurus teachings will lead to the betterment of each individual and to the strengthening of the wider Sikh community. It is in this spirit that the Board has actively sought to organize and promote meaningful activities that are in keeping with the three main tenets of Sikhism: Naam Japna, Vand Ke Chakna and Kirat Karni. In the following pages, we highlight the efforts of the Central Sikh Gurdwara Board. Boards Organization Structure The Board is constituted under an Act of Parliament in 1981 The Central Sikh Gurdwara Board Act [Chapter 357]. It manages two Gurdwaras (CST and SRST) and the Sikh Centre. At the last Biennial General Meeting held on 13 Sept 2009, 25 Council members were elected and at the Boards frst Council meeting, the designations and responsibilities of these members were decided as appears on the inside cover page of this report. Staffng The Board employed staff to manage the operations of its various units. Manpower Overview Organisation 31 Dec 09 31 Dec 10 Central Sikh Temple 6 6 Silat Road Sikh Temple 10 10 Sikh Centre 7 7 Total 23 23 The turnover among staff has been low, and the Board is always on the lookout for quality staff especially Kirtani Jathas. The Jathas at the Central Sikh Temple and Silat Road Sikh Temple have built an appreciative rapport with the Sangat with their good vocal cords. The children greatly enjoyed the food such as vegetarian pizzas and burgers, and of course, ice cream and chocolates as delectable deserts. Bandhi Chhorh Gurpurab celebrations were particularly memorable as the children had fun playing with sparklers. Guru Harkrishans birthday celebration was also noteworthy as the children themselves did Kirtan and Ardas and performed other sewas such as Chaur Sahib Sewa and distribution of Deg and Guru ka Langgar. More than 100 children attended each of these parties, with parents taking the lead in organizing the activities. The Board greatly appreciates the time, efforts and enthusiasm of the parents. Home Visits The celebration of Gurpurabs is also a special time for the Board to remember the less fortunate in our society. The Board organized care and share activities and promoted sewa among the Sangat. In conjunction with Bhai Maharaj Singhs Barsi, volunteers visited the Mei Ling Street Welfare Home in 2009 and 2010. Goodie bags containing soap, a tea towel, toothbrush and toothpaste were distributed to the Malay, Chinese and Indian residents. They particularly enjoyed the entertainment and langgar. The Henderson Welfare Home was visited on Sunday 25 th October 2009 during lunch time in conjunction with Bhandi Chhorh. The residents thoroughly enjoyed the various dance performances and the interaction with the volunteers. Langgar, consisting of porridge, bee hoon, drinks and mango pudding, was served and enjoyed by all. A group of 120 inmates from the Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital enjoyed a vigorous and captivating bhangra dance and lunch served at the Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital as part of Guru Nanaks birthday celebrations. The hospital was also given $3,600 for the purchase of two hospital beds. The aged and physically challenged in our community were special guests at the Central Sikh Temple in 2009 for Guru Nanaks birthday celebrations. They enjoyed Guru ka Langgar and were presented gifts. On Vesakhi and Guru Nanaks birthday celebrations each year, the Board sponsored a two months supply of dry rations at CST for all needy families under Sikh Welfare Council (SIWEC), and similarly funds were also raised for SIWEC during each Bhai Maharaj Singhs Barsi at SRST. Other benefciaries of the collection and distribution of dry goods and rations such as rice, biscuits, sugar and cooking oil over the 2009 to 2010 period included the Mei Ling Street Welfare Home, Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital, Jamiyah Childrens Home and the Sikh Welfare Council. A nature walk was organised on 29 August 2009 as part of adopting a healthy lifestyle. It was indeed a family day as children, parents and grandparents set off on a nature walk to the Horticultural Park as part of adopting a healthy lifestyle. For some, it was an opportunity to take snaps of the surrounding fora and fauna and observing birds and animals in their natural habitats. For others it was a combination of exercising and catching up with friends. There was a quiz session with prizes for the kids, and it all ended with a sumptuous meal at one of the pavilions. Our senior citizens had glimpses of years past when they visited a dairy farm on 7 November 2009 as part of Guru Nanaks birthday celebrations. Mighty Khalsa Visit to Pasir Ris Park Two busloads of children and their parents visited Pasir Ris Park on 30 th May 2009. The day started with seva at the Gurdwara before adjourning to the park and enjoying a day flled with fun, games, lots of activities, and delicious food and ice cream. Blood Donation It was pleasing to see a good turnout at the Red Cross blood donation drive held in the SRST car park in 2009 in support of the National Blood Programme. The Central Sikh Temple also organized a blood donation drive on 31 October 2009 in conjunction with Guru Nanaks birthday celebrations. Volunteers Party Seva is a signifcant aspect of the Sikh way of life and volunteers play an essential role in Care & Share and other activities. A volunteers party was held on 29 th November 2009 at Costa Sands Resort to acknowledge their seva at Central Sikh Temple, Silat Road Sikh Temple and the Sikh Centre. About 100 volunteers attended the function. There were bhangra performances, dancing and lots of fun and noise. We look forward to their continuous support and involvement in our activities. Sikhi for Children Our children and youth are an important part of our Sangat and the Board has been mindful of the need to develop, organize, support and promote programmes targeted at this sector. Sikhi classes for children were frst introduced at the Sikh Centre in 2009. S. Jaswant Singh together with a few enthusiastic volunteers put their heads together and specially designed classes for children of different age groups. The classes are held at the Sikh Centre on Saturdays and Sundays. A session typically involves paath, sakhi and age- appropriate activity like colouring, puzzles, songs, quizzes, etc. The classes are divided as: Nikke Khalse: A Course for Kindergarten Children Fateh: A Course for Lower Primary Children Chardi Kala: A Course for Upper Primary Children These classes have been popular and enrolment has risen from 55 in 2009 to 73 in 2010. Mighty Khalsa The Mighty Khalsa programmes are held bi-weekly at the Sikh Centre and help the children in our community to bond and interactively learn more about the concepts of the Sikh religion and culture in a fun way. They get to touch the Chaur Sahib and be close to the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. They also develop the confdence to do Ardaas and take the Vaak in front of the Sangat. Sikhi Camp Forty-eight enthusiastic children aged between 6 to 11 years came together at the Sikh Centre in June 2009 for a fun-flled holiday camp, where they also found time to learn more about their religion and gain self-confdence through interacting in teamwork in a spirit of cooperation. Briefng on Sikhism to Non-Sikhs The Board receives numerous requests from grassroots community organizations, church and volunteer groups, educational institutions, students and interested members of the public wanting to visit our Gurdwaras and be briefed on the Sikh faith. A committed group of staff and volunteers have been regularly providing tours of the temple, as well as making formal presentations on Sikh history and religion. One notable visit was by 46 visitors from the Friends of the Museum to Silat Road Sikh Temple on 29 April 2010. They were mainly foreigners doing social service in the museum. They gained valuable insights from S. Jaswant Singhs lecture on Sikhism, and were also introduced to traditional string instruments by our music master Satnam Singh. They visited the langgar hall and had a hands-on session on the art of making chapati. These visits usually conclude with participants being hosted to an enjoyable meal from our community kitchen. More than 2,000 visitors from various groups have been shown round our temples. The Board occasionally gets invited to make presentations on Sikhism to other non-Sikh institutions such as schools, tertiary institutions, and other religious bodies. These interactions serve to further promote a better understanding of Sikhi and inter-racial and inter- religious harmony.
