Neuburger ENG 102-127 September 25, 2012 Response paper A Film Unfinished A Film Unfinished is a documentary by Yael Hersonski, depicts daily life in the normal Warsaw ghetto during World War II that was shot by Nazi filmmakers. A Film Unfinished is a unique resource for classroom because of Hersonskis multi- viewed method in the film that get me start to think what is this story behind. Silence is my best description for this tragedy. When I watch this movie, it makes me think about all the tragedies that come from little things, like Hitlers childhood. After the end of WWII, four reels of film are discovered inside a vault in the German mountains. The film has no titles or credits, and is simply labeled The Ghetto. The images they captured ran from basic scenes of daily life to dreadful moments of death and hopelessness. The Warsaw Ghetto life is a struggle for survival, and many Jews who are forced into the Warsaw Ghetto live to tell of their untellable suffering. In the film, Where did you see a flower? one survivor comments, "We could eat it, implying an unimaginable living condition. Yael Hersonski includes interviews with five survivors of the ghetto who tell about what is happening in the film and recall their memories what was life under the Nazis. Yael Hersonski mentions in the film As we leave the theater, her thesis question echoes: when there is no one left to bear witness, how far can we trust the evidence of our eyes alone. The film proposes many different layers of investigation and discussion of the filming purpose of the Nazis. All 60 minutes of raw film are silent. Did the Nazi filmmaker leave silence on purpose?

Only silence can depict my anger of this tragedy. One of survivors in the film said What if I see someone I know, while she is watching the movie flicker across her face. The silence of this film gives many thought more than just facts of this tragedy. A Film Unfinished is rough to view but has it historical value that applies for a social study purpose.
