LingCloud Cloud Computing System

Czelina Ellaine O. Litimco

What is LingCloud?
supports various heterogeneous application modes including high performance computing, large scale data processing, massive data storage, etc. on shared infrastructure can help build private clouds for infrastructures and public clouds for managing data centers made open-source to promote the development of cloud computing industry and promote communication between the industry and the academe main part is under the Apache License 2.0

What is LingCloud?
Brief history
developed by the Research Group of Distributed and Cloud Computing, Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences

Release history
Version 0.8 0.9 0.9.1 Release date 28 May 2011 31 August 2011 22 December 2011

latest stable version is based on Xen virtualization platform and uses OpenNebula to manage virtual machines main part of LingCloud adopts SOA (service-oriented architecture), implemented by Java, Axis and other technologies

Features of LingCloud
Resource Partition
physical machine resource is organized and managed by the unit of partition, which supports multiple application modes and resource usage modes

Resource Leasing
virtual and physical machines leasing is supported by the unit of cluster to achieve resource provisioning on demand

Application encapsulation
make virtual appliances (virtual machine image template) through the web portal to help encapsulation and fast deployment of applications

Advantages of LingCloud
Freedom
there is a combination of both independent intellectual property and open-source technologies

Intensiveness
virtual resource management is available to make full use of the hardware coexistence of physical machines and virtual machines to ensure performance requirements multiple resource scheduling strategies for different optimizing goals

Advantages of LingCloud
Efficiency
lease is on demand, resulting to fast cluster deployment clusters are automatically configured with required application environment, "One-Click Deployment"

Security
isolation of LingCloud from application systems at runtime is ensured global single sign-in real-time monitor for resource running state

Usability
easy to learn low management and maintenance cost optimized remote login protocol to provide good user experience

Components of LingCloud
Main components of LingCloud release: Molva
core of LingCloud an elastic computing infrastructure management software providing a heterogeneous resource management and leasing framework (for resources such as computing, storage, network, data and application, etc.), and a single controlling point of both of the infrastructure and applications

Components of LingCloud
Main components of LingCloud release: Portal
system management interface via web currently includes
Infrastructure management
physical and virtual machines management by partitions and clusters

Application encapsulation
virtual machine image template creation and management

System monitor
clusters run-time information

LingCloud Architecture

http://lingcloud.org/lingcloud/technology-en

LingCloud Architecture
integrates traditional physical machines management technologies and virtualization technologies to construct a suite of infrastructure management system software, which supports physical and virtual machine management and leasing simultaneously supports online application encapsulation, provides security management, resource monitor and accounting mechanism allows adopting mature solution from the third-party to ensure security and reliability

LingCloud Architecture
provides resource management and leasing function based on GUI and related API for end users and developers respectively supports integration of some middlewares such as high performance computing in grid, large-scale data processing, massive data storage, etc. provides platform services for mainstream public and private cloud applications in cloud computing environment

Technology Characteristics
Heterogeneous application modes supporting
support multiple application modes such as virtual resource leasing, high performance computing, large scale data processing and mass storage in one system allow to adopt many other application modes.

Single controlling point

single logic view that is independent with resource types global management through uniform user interfaces including web portal, utility tools and APIs the operation scope involves both of infrastructure and applications

Technology Characteristics
Non-interference application runtime management
interferes the running applications as little as possible for ensuring application performance and resource utilization
beneficial for migrating applications and adopting legacy systems.

Multi-tenant supporting
providing multi-tenants running environments on shared physical infrastructure with global identity single sign-on, security and performance isolation supporting accounting by resource usage.

Using LingCloud
The LingCloud system and all its services are divided by its logical function. It needs the following kinds of servers: Master Server - deploy the LingCloud system, the main server in the LingCloud Application Encapsulation Server - deploy Xen virtualization platform, used for application encapsulation Storage Server - configure the NFS service, used for centralized storage of LingCloud ' s virtual machine disks Virtualization Server - deploy Xen virtualization platform, used for virtual machine cluster lease Other Common Servers - used for physical machine cluster lease

Using LingCloud
Master Server: Minimum Configuration

x86_64 CPU At least 500 MB of available space on the hard disk At least 1 GB of RAM 100Mbps Ethernet card, connected within the LAN
