What Is It?
The Great Awakening was a time when people put a great importance on people and their spiritual experience instead of putting a lot of emphasis on the churches. It took place during the 1730s and 1740s.

Old Lights & New Lights

Old Lights were people who were following the traditions of the Church, and New Lights were people who followed the ideas of the Great Awakening. Most of the New Llights were Methodists or Baptists.

Questions

Why would they force people to believe In God?

Why would someone come all the way from England to preach to people to believe it God?

Two Important People

Jonathan Edwards was a person who put on an emphasis on religion. Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God was his most famous sermon in 1741. It brought attention to the belief that Hell is a real place. Edwards hoped that this would wake up his horrified audience of what happened if they continued life without God Before moving to colonial America, George Whitefield was a British minister. He traveled and preached around North America and Europe between 1740 through 1770. Because of him, the Great Awakening spread to Europe, too.

American Ideas
It unified American ideas, because without the Great Awakening, we probably wouldnt have had all of the religions we have. Or I think that people probably wouldnt have been as accepting as Christianity. Also, I think that the Great Awakening was a good way of unifying American ideas because it brought much more attention to religion.
