Yonkers gets $4.2M in federal housing grants YONKERS -- The city has been awarded $4.

2 million in federal grants to help provide affordable housing and expand economic opportunities for low- and moderate-income residents. The two biggest grants, more than $2.9 million in Community Development Block Grants and $982,235 from the Home Investment Partnerships program, will be used to expand the supply of affordable housing for financially-needy families. A third grant, $293,560 from the Emergency Shelter program, will be used to improve the quality and number of emergency homeless shelters. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grants were announced this month by U.S. Rep. Eliot Engel, D-Bronx, whose district includes parts of Yonkers and Mount Vernon. This assistance is going to those most in need and with the least resources, Engel said. In these difficult economic times, we should do all we can to help those who require this aid the most.
