Today the NAACP would like to recognize and honor former California elected offi cial and Political

Action chair of the Ca-Hi NAACP State Conference, Mervyn Dyma lly. He passed away Sunday October 7th, 2012 at 86 years old. Many remember Dymally as a man who broke down racial barriers within the governm ent inside and out of California. As the first and only black Lieutenant Governor in the history of California, he served under Governor Jerry Brown from 1975-1979. Dymally started his political career in 1963 as a state assembly member. He served as an officer in the assembly for over 20 years. He also spent another 12 years in congress as the representative for the Southern Los Angeles area. Many remember Dymally for his efforts during the 1965 LA Watts riots. As an asse mbly member he was able to pull together local churches in order to organize foo d and medicine deliveries into the hostile zone where outsiders were not allowed . The Trinidad-born Dymally is survived by his wife Alice, a son and daughter, as well as three sisters. Funeral arrangements are still pending.
