Neighborhood Odes Lesson Plan

Classroom Demographics: I have a 3rd grade class of 20 students. I have 5 ELL students in the classroom on various levels of learning. I have five groups with an ELL student in each group for this activity. Two of my ELL students are Level 2 learners and 3 of the ELL students are Level 3 learners. Lesson objective: Develop an understanding of the word community through the use of multicultural poetry text. Students will be able to make personal connections in their own lives using the words of another. Materials: Copies of (3) Neighborhood Odes by Gary Soto that we will be using in class. Construction paper Reading journals Crayons, colored pencils or markers

Odes to be used during the lesson: Ode to Fireworks, Ode to piata, Ode to the park Pre-reading activities: (Level 2 and 3) Students will brainstorm as a whole group the word community by creating a circle map or word web on the whiteboard. Learners will be able to answer the questions below. What is the definition of community? What are some examples of communities? What is a neighborhood? What are some things in your neighborhood you like?

Level 2 learners will trace their hand on a piece of paper, and on each finger they will write a word or phrase that best describe things that they find in their community. Level 3 learners will also create the finger drawing but they will take this a step further and write 3-5 sentences stating what they like about their community or on the backside of the drawing. Students will then share in their groups their drawings/sentences. Vocabulary: Community, neighbor, neighborhood, piata, parque, barbeque, fireworks
