Tips offered for a safe Halloween

The Burlington County Board
of Chosen Freeholders, sheriff
and the Burlington County
Health Department offer tips for a
safe Halloween.
As children in your communi-
ty descend into the neighbor-
hoods with their costumes, the
Burlington County Freeholders
and Health Department want to
make sure Halloween is enjoyable
for everyone, while keeping safety
in mind, said Freeholder Mary
Ann OBrien who oversees the
Health Department. Some sim-
ple safety tips will help parents
protect their children while trick-
or-treating.
The Burlington County Health
Department recommends the fol-
lowing precautions for parents:
Never allow children to eat
candy until parents or caregivers
have inspected it. Eat only treats
in original and unopened wrap-
pers.
When trick-or-treating at
night, children should use a flash-
light or glow stick to light the way
and allow them to be seen in the
dark.
Trick-or-treaters should
wear brightly colored costumes
made of flame resistant materi-
als.
Remove Jack-O-Lanterns
with lit candles inside them from
doorsteps. Candles can be easily
knocked over by children and
pets.
Liquid from a broken glow
stick is usually non-toxic, but if
your child ingests it, call the poi-
son experts if you are unsure or
have any questions.
Wash hands or use a hand
sanitizer after trick or treating,
petting animals or picking pump-
kins and apples.
Use non-toxic face paint or
make-up as an alternative to
wearing a mask.
Beware of peanuts or
peanut oil in candies, for those
with allergies.
Be mindful of pets. Treats
such as chocolate can be poison-
ous to dogs or cats.
Make sure any items that
can cause choking, such as hard
candy, are given to children of an
appropriate age to avoid choking.

Keep costumes away from flames
The Health Department also
offers parents the following sug-
gestions to encourage more nutri-
tious holiday snacking:
Discuss in advance how
Halloween candy will be stored
and how quickly it will be eaten.
Make sure that children eat
a satisfying meal before Hal-
loween festivities begin, and
keep nutritious snacks (like ap-
ples or carrot sticks) available for
them.
Choose more healthful
treats, such as individually-
wrapped packages of dried fruits,
and lower-fat treats such as indi-
vidually-wrapped packages of
pretzels, ginger snaps, graham
crackers and vanilla wafers.
Organize activities at home
or school where there is more
control over the types of snacks
available.
County Sheriff Jean Stanfield,
who chairs the Traffic Safety
Task Force, also urged parents to
talk to their children about pre-
ventive measures they can take to
ensure a safe experience. We
urge motorists and trick-or-
treaters to exercise caution, she
said.
Some recommendations for
trick-or-treaters are:
Trick-or-treat in groups and
obey curfew laws
Only go to homes with
which you are familiar
Never go into a home
Dont tell anyone your full
name or address
Carry a flashlight and, if
available a watch and cell phone
Plan in advance your route,
and communicate any changes to
your parents
Trick-or-treaters should avoid
all open flames, whether it is part
of the costume or not. Candles,
lighters, bonfires and fireplaces
could ignite a costume and cause
serious injury.
The sheriff also advised that if
candy appears to have been tam-
pered with, local police should be
contacted.
Parents can visit www.Can-
dyUSA.org for information re-
garding possible tampering with
candy.

The Shamong Sun
While some spirits are considered evil,
the good luck of a spirit or animal, of the
Pine Barrens has been protecting Sha-
mong since the 1770s.
According to the Burlington County
website, Quaker Bridge in Shamong was
built in 1772. It was named after the Quak-
ers who would cross the Batsto River on
their way to monthly meetings located in
Tuckerton.
One stormy evening, a stagecoach was
heading through torrential rains traveling
to the Quaker Bridge Inn. The stagecoach
driver saw a light in the distance and was
relieved to see that he had finally arrived at
the inn.
That originally was the stagecoach to
Tuckerton. Tuckerton was the third
largest port into the United States in the
1700s next to New York and Philadelphia,
said Barbara Solem, author of Ghost
Towns and Other Quirky Places in the
New Jersey Pine Barrens, in addition to
giving tours at Atsion Mansion.
According to NJPineBarrens.com, the
bridge quickly became an important cross-
ing place over the Mullica in the region.
The well-worn bridle path, and former In-
dian trail, the Quakers used for their annu-
al pilgrimage soon widened to become one
of the main roads between Philadelphia
(actually, the ferries in present-day Cam-
den) and Tuckerton. During the American
War for Independence, it seems logical that
privateers used this Tuckerton Road and
the Quaker Bridge, among other routes, to
move a portion of their booty to the Quak-
er city.
According to Solem, the journey down
to Tuckerton was rough that night, and be-
cause of the storm the safe arrival to the
tavern was imperative. Once the driver
saw the light in the distance from the tav-
ern, he encouraged the horses to speed up
and finally get out of the storm.
Taverns were really important then be-
cause stagecoaches ran from Coopers
Landing in Camden down to the shore. Its
a 50-mile journey, and in the early years it

T
he presidential and vice presi-
dential debates are over. Some
of the comments and issues
that received the most attention:
Big Bird.
Malarkey.
Binders of women.
A passive President Obama.
An aggressive President Obama.
Jeremy the college kid who was
promised a job.
Mitt Romneys kid wanting to punch
the president.
Horses and bayonets.
And a moderator who confused the
presidents name with that of a well-
known and now-deceased terrorist.
Indeed, these were some of the is-
sues that grabbed immediate atten-
tion. Some news outlets measured the
number of Tweets about them.
Fortunately, Tweets are irrelevant.
We cant really blame people for
their instant reactions when someone
launches a zinger or makes a mistake.
Its human nature. So is declaring a
winner, commenting on the candi-
dates demeanors and emotions and
otherwise taking instant notice of the
more obvious and entertaining mo-
ments of the debates.
But we give both the president and
Romney credit for bringing not only
passion (some might say too much pas-
sion) to the debates, but also a willing-
ness to exchange about real issues.
Those paying only a little attention to
the debates couldnt help but see true
differences in the candidates, their
plans if they are elected and their ap-
proach to governing.
The two seldom agreed (except, per-
haps, on more issues in the last debate
over foreign policy). They punched and
counter-punched. Each stood his
ground. And both set forth dramatical-
ly different visions for the nation.
We have less than a week to go be-
fore Election Day and a hotly contested
race, at least with the popular vote. We
also have a clear idea of what each can-
didate will do if he is elected. While
the quips got the spotlight, both candi-
dates did a good job of delivering
meaningful messages.
in our opinion

qualify for states than ever be-
fore, said Spector.
Senecas safe trick-or-treat was
successful last year, and will be
making a return on Wednesday,
Oct. 31 from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. in
the high schools hallways.
This is a very popular pro-
gram in our school hosted by our
Renaissance Club under the ad-
visement of Laura Hoy, Jackie
Ford and Maureen McMichael.
The hallways are always packed
with our local elementary stu-
dents. We would expect the same
this year, said Spector.
Spector presented a video on
One Book, One School, a pro-
gram LRHSD has been taking
part in. Last year, Seneca teach-
ers, students and staff read the
Hunger Games, by Suzanne
Collins and used the book as in-
spiration to take part in their
own version of the competition.
Last year, the Hunger Games
was so popular, we wanted to do
it again. We wanted to inspire
them to do something for others,
Kathy Donoghue, media special-
ist and co-chair of One Book, One
School told The Sun in the begin-
ning of October.
The project took on a new
meaning after the school read
The Fault in Our Stars, by
John Green, a New York Times
bestselling book that follows two
Indianapolis teenagers, Hazel
Lancaster and Augustus Waters,
who meet at a Cancer Kid and
Support Group, and eventually
fall in love.
Students and teachers spent 12
hours on the track and football
field participating in a variety of
activities.
Additionally, students and
teachers cut their hair
and shaved their heads for the
cause.
We had over 700 students, and
over 100 staff members partici-
pated. The school raised over
$26,000 dollars for the American
Cancer Society, said Spector.
With the impetuous of the event
being our One Book, One School
summer reading activity, I can-
not be more proud of our stu-
dents, parents and staff. What an
amazing event to incorporate our
curriculum and promote stu-
dents civic responsibility.
The Seneca student body is no
stranger to service and helping
the community.
Students participated in a toy
drive in addition to other service
projects organized by various
clubs.
We have multiple organiza-
tions involved in holiday giving.
While this is an annual event, the
different clubs and organizations
plan their own service projects.
We are very proud as a school to
place an emphasis on giving back
to our local community as well as
in our county, state and beyond,
said Spector.
Furthermore, the students par-
ticipate in Senior Day of Service,
a LRHSD schools-wide initiative.
Students went to local schools,
fire companies, churches, homes
and a diner to volunteer to help
with planting greens and rear-
ranging books, among a variety
of other service projects.
Bill Fisher, organizer of the
service day told The Sun in June
the students visited Tabernacle
Elementary School, Olson Middle
School, Indian Mills Elementary
School, Indian Mills Middle
School, Russos Fruit and Veg-
etable Farm, the Church of the
Holy Eucharist, Lord of Life
Church, Shamong Diner, Vincen-
town Fire Company, Hampton
Lakes Fire Company, Tabernacle
Fire Company, Indian Mills Fire
Company, Tabernacle EMT, Indi-
an Mills EMT and 50 homes in
Leisuretowne.
Community service is a core
value of Seneca High School with
over 95 percent of our seniors
participating in our Senior Day
of Service, and a Community
Service Club advised by Lynn
Ritter with over 100 students par-
ticipating, said Spector.

ects and events happening at

White stag considered a good
luck symbol in Pine Barrens
would take two days, said Solem.
The tavern let people stay
overnight from their travel down
to Tuckerton.
As the driver approached the
bridge, a white stag appeared
causing the horses to rear and
eventually come to a halt.
The driver got off the stage-
coach to investigate. Once he got
to where the stag was, the bridge
was destroyed, said Solem.
From that point on, they did
not shoot white stags when hunt-
ing.
According to the Burlington
County website, the white stag
has since been considered a good
luck symbol for the Pine Barrens.
The story is unclear, however,
whether the stag was a spirit or
not.
For whatever reason, the stag
showed up to save them, said
Solem.
There are still white stags in
the area, and according to Solem,
the herd can be found in Lesuire-
town.
Cedar Run [Wildlife Refuge]
had a young white stag about two
years ago, so theyre definitely
still around, said Solem.
There have been no recorded
reports or incidents involving a
white stag as a guardian to save
someone from a bad situation
since, but the story is still told
and remembered while traveling
down Quaker Bridge Road.
