What is Fire? What is a Fire Triangle? Fire Fighting Fire Extinguishers

What is fire?

It is the result of a chemical reaction named Combustion. It releases large amount of heat, light and various products. Some of the released products may be harmful and causing severe injuries or even death.

Fire Triangle

Fuel , Oxygen and Heat make up the fire triangle. All three of these things are necessary for the formation of a fire.

Fire Fighting

It is the act of extinguishing fire. A fire fighter fights fires to prevent loss of life, and destruction of property and the environment. Firefighting is a highly technical skill that requires professionals with many years of training and special areas of expertise.

How to stop a fire.

Stopping a fire from burning can be done by removing one or more conditions necessary for a fire to be formed. Therefore a fire can be stopped by removing heat, oxygen or fuel.

Three methods of extinguishing a fire

Removing the heat Removing the oxygen supply Removing the fuel supply

Fire Extinguishers

Four Main Types

Water Type Carbon dioxide [CO2] Type Dry Powder Type Foam Type

Classes of Fire

1- Water Type

Spraying of water cools the fire. For fires caused by solid combustibles. [e.g. wood, paper]

Why is water not suitable for fires involving liquids and electricity?
Water can conduct electricity and may cause electrical shocks The flammable liquid may float on the fire and spread the fire further

2-Foam Type
The foam cuts off the air supply and provides some cooling Suitable for fires caused by liquid combustibles. Not suitable for fires involving electricity as foam can conduct electricity causing an electric shock.

3- Carbon dioxide type

Carbon dioxide cuts off the air supply of the fire. How? Carbon dioxide has a higher density it surrounds the fire and cuts off the air supply It is suitable for most type of fires

Suitable for fires caused by electricity and liquid combustibles. Why?

Carbon dioxide does not conduct electricity It covers the flammable liquid and cuts off the air supply

4- Dry Chemical Powder [DCP]
