UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS

Universal precautions refer to avoiding contact with patients body fluid by means of wearing non porous articles such as goggles, gloves & face shields.

Under these all patients are considered to be possible carriers of blood born pathogen.

They recommend wearing gloves when collecting or handling blood & body fluids. Wearing face shields when there is danger of blood splashing. Body fluids that require precautions are blood, semen, vaginal secretions, synovial fluid, amniotic fluid, CSF, plural fluid, peritoneal fluid & pericardial fluid. Body fluids that do not require precautions are feces, saliva, nasal secretions, urine & vomitus and perspiration.
