Diesel electric power plant is a power plant in which a diesel engine is used as the prime mover for the

generation of electrical energy. Suitable for the small and medium outputs. Suitable where the electric line service is unavailable or available at the higher costs.

The main components are as listed below: 1- Engine 8-Governing system 2- Fuel system 9- Electrical generator 3- Intake system 4- Exhaust system 5- Cooling system 6- Lubrication system 7- Starting and stopping system

Cooling system- to remove the excess heat from the engine cylinder Lubrication- provides oil to reduce wear of the parts. Governing- to maintain constant speed of an engine

Simple suction systemUsed for the small capacity plant in which oil is taken by a suction pump driven by engine from service tank. Transfer systemPreferred for large or medium size plants. The fuel is delivered by the rail road, car, truck or by barge or tanker and stored in the bulk storage tank.

FunctionsDeliver oil from daily tank to injector at high pressure. To measure and control amount of fuel admitted. To control time of injection as per load and speed. To atomize for through mixing with air.

This can be achieved as below:

Air injection method Solid injection method

Common rail injection system Individual pump injection system Distributor injection system

The system which removes heat from engine heating components in order to maintain predefined temperature level is known as engine cooling system.

Necessity:High temperature could result in loss of strength. High engine temp. may lead in very hot exhaust valve, which leads to abnormal combustion process. High temp. may result in reduction in
