The Tube at 30 with Chris Phipps


An evening of music and television history with Chris Phipps.
Launched in November 1982, The Tube was Channel 4s legendary agship music show. Broadcast from Tyne Tees TV Studio 5 every Friday night and fronted by the inimitable Jools Holland and Paula Yates, The Tube changed the format of pop music TV forever before its premature cancellation in 1987. The Tube featured many iconic performances from a range of new and established musical artists as well as aiding the comedy careers of French and Saunders, Roland Rivron and Vic Reeves. Chris Phipps was co-producer on The Tube and was instrumental in booking and showcasing a range of the most memorable appearances on the show including The Proclaimers, Fine Young Cannibals, Paul Young, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, The Housemartins, The Icicle Works, Twisted Sister and Tina Turner. Chriss talk takes us on an insider'strip throughunseen images, sounds and anecdotes from The Tube, revealing a small screen world of chaos and attitude reecting an extraordinary era of change in the music business which saw the coming of MTV, Michael Jacksons Thriller and the advent of the compact disc. Now a music historian, Chris has contributed to a number of innovative music documentaries such as Bob Marley - Time Will Tell, Mark Knoper - A Life in Song as well as the BBCs classic album feature on Black Sabbaths Paranoid. A Midlander by birth, Chris will also reect onhislocalradio and TV roots, the local bands he featured on The Tube and his passion for documenting regional pop historyfor network and local TV.
