Motivation

Motivation is a process that account for an individuals intensity ,direction ,and persistence of effort toward attaining a goal. Motivation is the internal drive to accomplish a particular drive. In an organization motivation is what makes people want to work.

Physiological needs:-includes hunger, thirst, shelter. Safety needs:-security and protection from physical and emotional harm. Social needs:-affection , belongingness , acceptance , and friendship. Esteem needs:- internal factors such as self-respect and achievement and external factors such as status, recognition and attention. Self-actualization:-drive to become what one is capable of becoming includes growth , and self-fufillment.

Implications of Maslows theory in the workplace

Not everyone is motivated in the same way. Motivation and need satisfaction are anticipatory in nature. Managers must seek to guide and direct employee behaviour to meet the organizational needs and individual needs simultaneously.

IMPLICATION OF HERZBERGS THEORY

Providing the hygiene factor will eliminate employee dissatisfaction but will not motivate worker to high level of achievements. Recognition, responsibility and the opportunity to achieve personal growth will promote satisfaction and employee performance.

McClellands Theory
A theory which explains the three important needs of motivation: Achievement Power Affiliation
