Survivor: Dudley Middle School

Only the Kind Survive


Objective: To foster kindness within the school community. Rationale: Students need to learn that the manner in which they treat others is at least as important, if not more so, than school work, test scores and other measures of success. Schools send a message to the children in their community by what they value. When kindness, manners and other such qualities are valued and modeled, the students may get the message that those things matter in life or at least thats the idea. Survivor: Dudley Middle School systematically highlights the importance of treating others with kindness. Activities / Program Components: 1. School wide Survivor Island

a. Painted on cafeteria wall (completed 1/19/10) b. Huts for four different tribes one for each grade level
2. Survivor Cards

a. Each adult has several cards to use at his/her discretion. b. A card is given to a student when he/she demonstrates kind / civil behavior c. Students post their card on the island where their grade level tribe is
located. In extreme cases, Survivor cards may be revoked for unkind behavior (ie: students may be voted off the island).

3. Rewards a. Students receive a small reward (ice cream ticket, etc.) when Survivor Card is issued. b. Any student whose name remains on the island on June 1st (survivors, if you will) receives a Survivor Pack consisting of: i. DMS backpack ii. Im a Survivor t-shirt iii. Coupons to local businesses iv. Movie tickets v. Other, as available c. Survivor Packs will be issued at a special school day celebration where students will: i. Be treated to either breakfast (pancakes) or lunch (pizza or a cookout) parents welcome to attend d. Survivors will occupy the front page of the DMS website throughout the summer as examples of what we value at our school.
