TITLE:

Stars and Stories: Inquiry Science for 3rd-12th Grade Teachers

So old is Blackfeet astronomy that the sun, moon, and stars have a place in the memory and sacred ceremonies of the Blackfeet who can predict when various sky beings will appear. This familiarity with the sky serves to build a Sense of Place and Beauty for the Blackfeet people not just in Montana, but in the entire universe and not just for now, but for all time. Three teaching units will be demonstrated along with background into methodologies of instruction. The uses of Google Earth, OPI resources and the Blackfeet Skies curriculum will be demonstrated. Additional OPI resources will be utilized. This 2-day workshop reviews the Montana Science Standard 4 Benchmark 6 and Essential Learning Expectations for Science in grades 7-12, Social Studies Standard 6 Benchmark 2, and Essential Understandings Regarding Montana Indians 1 & 3. After this workshop, participants will be able to: access and utilize the inquiry activities demonstrated in an educational environment; demonstrate increased knowledge about two tribes in Montana; and demonstrate use of additional software and hardware explored during the workshop.

15 OPI renewal units OR 1 graduate credit through Montana State UniversityNorthern. MSU-N will charge $150.00 for this credit which is paid at the workshop. Participants will be responsible for travel, lodging, and meals (except lunch Monday and Tuesday). A block of rooms at the Butte Plaza Inn has been reserved at the rate of $89+tax/night. Ask for RESA4U block.

EXPENSES:

Participants need to bring a wireless internet capable laptop with SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: Google Earth v6.2 installed. iPad is also recommended if available.
