Johnson English II/ Period 3 23 April 2012 Extra Credit Persuasive Essay Former Laker, Hall of Fame inductee, Earvin Magic Johnson has appealed to a broad amount of people because of what he does. For the reasons of being a former Laker/hall of fame inductee, the objective to revitalize and provide quality entertainment and services to neglected, urban communities, and a philanthropist, and an AIDS foundation turning a negative into a positive. He is the reason why he is the best because he inspirited many with his speeches and his personal life. Earvin got most of his fans from basketball career on the Los Angles Lakers in 1979. He later announced he has AIDS and retired from the Lakers in 1991 because of the health concern. This difficult choice shows that even famous athletes are just like us, which they have to make difficult decisions. He announced it because he wanted to bring awareness to this disease. His awareness for the AIDS/HIV has started a new view on this disease. He had started the Magic Johnson Foundation to support research efforts and to bring awareness programs. The main object of his foundation is to provide services to neglected, urban communities. He has also written a book called What You Can Do to Avoid AIDS, as an educational guide. Doing something for change is not only showing how he is a role model, but also shows how no matter what happens, a change can be made. Being an author and motivational speaker, Magic has touched many regardless if

they have the virus or not. He speeches inform the audience that gays arent only one or not practicing safe sex that can get this virus. Magic is showing that dont assume what myths are always true that in fact they could be just inaccurate facts. The amount of effort he puts in to this cause has shown that something that is negative can be completely be in a positive light, considering the services. This is the reason why he is a philanthropist because he making people feel that if you get this virus, there is support groups and many other services to help you cope with this fact.
