INTRODUCTION
Raw data from a research project cannot generally be

directly used for analysis. It has to be prepared and converted into a suitable form.

DATA PREPARATION
The steps involve in data preparation are : Editing data Coding Transcription of data ( transcribing) Generating new variables Tabulation of frequency distribution

Editing data
After getting data first job is to edit data
Editing in two stages Field editing and central office edit

Missing data
Ambiguous answers Accuracy/quality Computer editing

Coding
Conversion of raw data into symbols or numerals in

order to facilitate tabulation, categorization and further processing Establishing categories Assigning data to categories

Transcription of data
This is the process of physically transferring data from

the measuring instruments on to computer media for making useable for computer analysis.

New variable/functional combination/splitting form

New variables not data contemplated prior to data

collection can be developed using the coded data by combining two or more variables or converting scales or combing with the secondary data. New variables are often generated from combinations of other variables in the data it may be desirable to to collect internally scaled data as such and later assign them to classes. New variables may be added from secondary data.

Tabulation of frequency distribution

Tabulation consists simply of counting the number of

cases that fall into the various categories. Simple tabulation and cross tabulation.
