From: Ashley Campbell, Media Specialist Candidate Jennifer Sweat, Media Specialist Subject: Media Center Evaluation I have recently conducted a GA DOE 2012 Library Media Program Evaluation on the operation of the media center. This was done with in collaboration with Ms. Sweat the Library Media Specialist. I am happy to report that out of the twenty target indicators listed in the rubric the Library Media Program scored exemplary in eighteen categories, proficient in two categories, and basic in zero categories. Even though your school is still rather new the LMS has had lots of opportunities for staff and parent development including sessions on cyber bulling, online safety, web 2.0 tools, copyright, classroom microphone tutorials, and ladybug document camera training. She has also built quite a collection of technology that students and teachers actively use to enhance literacy skills including, projectors, remote tablets, student response clickers, Nooks, and Playaways. Also, the school is now set up to access the online public access catalog (OPAC) and research databases through the schools local area network (LAN) and at home through the student portal. One more area that puts your schools program in the exemplary range is the amount of time that teachers and media staff collaborate for higher learning. The Media Specialist meets with all grade levels several times a year during the CAT meetings to present new technology and tools for enrichment. She also collaborates on a regular basis with classroom teachers to develop instruction and assessment that meets the diverse needs of students. As you can see the Library Media Center is a critical element in the schools literacy and reading program. The two areas that the program scored proficient in were due to the fact that the library does not have regularly scheduled evening hours and the library does not currently have a whiteboard. My action plan for getting those areas to exemplary status is to schedule after hour book checkout and computer time one day a week. Also, the whiteboard can be discussed in the budget plan for the upcoming spring. Department of Education, (2012). Georgia DOE 2012 library media program selfevaluation rubric.
