MNE 497 A Brief History of Jerome H. Lemelson

Jason Souza

Jerome H. Lemelson was a dynamic engineer who held over 500 U.S patents. These patents bolstered the development of products and innovations such as industrial robots, wireless telephones, and camcorders. After Lemelson received two Masters degrees in aeronautical and industrial engineering, he worked for the Office of Naval Research for several years. Lemelson broke away from the research institute to pursue a career as an independent inventor after the Office of Naval Research neglected to take account several safety improvements in which Lemelson believed could have saved lives. Lemelsons first invention was an autonomous robot that could perform services in an industrial environment such as welding, measuring products, and scanning products for manufacturing flaws. Lemelson went on to work on patents to develop aspects or data and word processing, integrated circuits, toys, and lasers. Lemelson is most famously for his controversial litigations for his patent claims. He numerous patent disputes that granted him his patents since he was the first to invent. Later on Lemelson would be looked at as a hero for protecting independent inventors from big corporations having their intellectual property patented before the inventors.
