Narrative Essays: Sample

QUESTION: Write a story with the ending, "If only I had been more careful, that wouldn't have happened". Your story should not be less than 350 words.

Tonight was a cold and stormy night. The doors slammed shut as the rustling sound of the leaves could be heared. The storm had been like this for the past three days. I sat on my bed thinking if I had upset the Gods above in heaven. As I lay my head down soft and gently on my comfy pillow, I wondered if mom and dad were ok. They had gone for a vacation to the bahamas and I had to stay back because of my exams. I wasn't worried about it as I've stayed alone many times.

Suddenly, the lights went out. My heart raced in agony as the storm got worse. I could see lightning lashing onto my gate and the roaring sound of thunder that came along. I pulled myself together and realised I needed to light some candles. So I headed downstairs with my trusty torchlight and worked my way to the storage room. I found the candles and begun to light them all over the house. I couldn't stand the fact that the darkness was playing games with my mind.

An hour had passed till I realised something wasn't right. I felt as if something else besides me was in the house. I panicked. My mind filled with fear but I had to be sure I was right. So, I searched all the rooms on the same floor and found nothing. So I carefully walked down staircase. As I was walking, I realised all the candles that I had lit were put out. I was surprised but aware that there could be someone else in the house. My mind pondered as to how i was going to sneak around without alerting the possibly dangerous stranger.

Then, it happened. As I hid behind one of the room's doors. I saw someone walk by me. He was a huge muscular guy who wore a beard and had hair that was so curly a fly could get stuck if it went through it. I was puzzled. Why would someone want to break into my house, I asked myself. I noticed the man had a huge revolver on his belt. The same one the cops used. I didn't want to stick around and aak questions. I had to call the cops. So I crept towards the phone and thank God it was still working. I made a distressed call and the cops said they would be at my house in five minutes.

As I crept back upstairs, I accidently knocked over a small lamp and it broke. By this time I knew the stranger had been alerted. I was scared and feared for my life. My fears turned into my worst nightmare as I heard a loud noise. I was shot in the chest. I could feel blood oozing all over my shirt. The stranger walked towards me while mumbling words I just couln't understand. I thought I was a dead man. Then a miracle happened just as the stranger was about to finish me off. I heard a second

I was rushed to the hospital and the doctors commenced emergency surgery on me to remove the bullet. I was then transferred to the Intensive Care Unit(ICU) as the bullet had hit my lungs and I was unable to breathe properly. My parents rushed back as soon as they got the news. I was lucky to be alive. The doctor had explained that if the bullet had hit me a bit more to the left , it would have hit my heart and I would be dead. Nobody knew who the stranger was or what he wanted. If only I had been more careful, that wouldn't have happened

Continuous Writing: Sample essay

The Library Preparing for my SPM exam, I stayed late in the library for the first time. Unexpectedly, while getting a book out from the shelf, across the gap I saw a pretty face. We had a quick glimpse of each other. Feeling embarrassed, I quickly left the place but I could not forget her beautiful face. Back at my place, I tried to concentrate in my work. Tired, I fell asleep. Shocked with her sudden presence next to me, I gasped meekly and acknowledged her. Unable to overcome my timidity, I decided to leave. Nevertheless, I kept thinking of her. The next day I was all dressed up to go to the library. I hoped to bump into her again. As I was about to enter the library, someone tapped me from behind. Taken aback by surprise, I slipped and fell. In a daze, someone helped me up. Are you alright? Yes I stammered. I was speechless to see her and she gestured me into the library. We introduced ourselves and located a cozy place to study. With Jane next to me, concentration was difficult. Looking at her I could not help feeling so in love. Running in luck, she seemed to feel the same way too. For months, we continued to enjoy our time together and could not bear to be separated. I remembered that fateful day when I bravely took a detour to get her a bouquet of red roses. Smiling contentedly, I felt ready to ask her to be my girlfriend. As usual, I waited patiently for her at the entrance of the library.

However, Salbiah did not turn up. I got worried and started calling her. Despite all attempts to contact her, she was nowhere to be found. For weeks she did not come to the library. Waiting in faith, I continued to go to the library hoping to see her again. As if answering my prayers, I received an anonymous letter one month later. In it, there was a map with a note: Go to the place marked X on the map. Hastily, I rushed to the location. Digging at the spot, I found a wooden box. Immediately I opened it. There was a scroll in it. It was a letter from Salbiah. She explained in detail her incurable disease and thanked me for making the last few months of her life the most meaningful ones. She claimed that she would love me forever and apologised for not being able to say goodbye to me personally. Realising that, she had already passed away, my tears refused to stop flowing for a long time. Memories of her will remain forever in my mind. To some people this may seem like a pitiful love story; to others, it is just plain romantic. However, to me, this has been a very touching and unforgettable experience in my life.

Essay on Teacher's Day

RADHAKANTA SWAIN ESSAY

Introduction: Teachers are the nation-builders. They build the future citizens of the country. But nobody in our society thinks of the teachers. Our late President Dr. Sarbapali Radhakrishnan advised the countrymen to stop to observe the 5th September as his birthday, but to observe it as the Teacher's Day. So, since the year 1962 the 5th September is every year observed as the Teacher's Day. Advantages: Teachers are in charge of building the children of the society as the future citizens of the country. They teach them all art and all science. They teach the manners and behaviors. They make them the useful members of our nation. So, if the teachers are neglected, the country cannot advance. On the Teacher's Day, the whole nation gets a chance to think of the teachers. They think of how to give the teachers their due place in the society and how to respect them. They think of what have been done during the year past and what should be done during the year coming. On this day, they pay homage to the local teachers in the public meeting. This day, beholds a grand meeting of the teachers and the public. How this day is observed: On this day, the daily duty of the teachers is held suspended. The teachers are received by their students and the public in a large meeting. The students and the people sing prayer to the teachers. They garland the teachers. They speak a lot in praise of the teachers. They express their gratitude to the teachers for their grand social service. The teachers are offered very rich banquets by the public. Money is collected from the public to contribute to the All-India Teacher's Fund. In this way the Teacher's Day is observed everywhere in India every year on the 5th September. Conclusion: The Teacher's Day is really an important day for the nation. Every one should realize the importance of this day. If we can know how to respect the teachers, we will do the yeoman's service to country.
