Case scenario
A 32-year-old Malay women came to your Policlinic session with a complaint of dull ache at the 47 area. The tooth had a fractured temporary restoration. At the time, she did not suffer any serious pain. She was medically fit and healthy.

Case scenario
Clinical findings revealed that the tooth was brittle with a very large IRM filling. Soft brown discolouration was noted around the periphery of the temporary restoration. The margin was subgingival. It was tender to percussion, tender to palpation, and non-responsive to any sensibility testing. You gave a diagnosis of chronic apical periodontitis of the 47. The patient has heard of root canal treatment. She insisted to have it done onto her tooth.

Explain in laymans term what root canal treatment is.
