A Changed Unit Of Measure

Read Mark 5:1-20

Pastor Dan Chun

Jesus seemed to have the habit of changing the unit of measure. When a widow gave two
copper coins into the Temple Treasury, Jesus told His disciples that she gave more than the
others because she gave all that she had and they didn’t. (Mark 12:41-43)

When a rich young man asked Jesus what else he needed to do to have eternal life, Jesus
replied that keeping all the commandments wasn’t enough. The rich young man also needed
to sell everything he had and give to the poor. (Matthew 19:16-22)

And in this passage, we find Jesus allowing the destruction of 2,000 pigs, which meant
killing the livelihood of an entire village, just to heal and save an unpopular and violent man
tormented by demons.

In the next chapter of Mark, we find Jesus miraculously feeding 5,000 people. What made all
these people want to follow Jesus and listen to what He had to say? I think the healed man
had a lot to do with it. Jesus told him to tell others what the Lord had done for him and the
compassion He had shown him. And so he did. One person’s changed life drew thousands of
people to Jesus.

Lord, help me prioritize my life as You would have it when it comes to the use of money and
being wiling to share about the grace of You in my life. In Christ’s name, Amen.
