BLUE ARMY GENERAL ELECTIONS
‘At UCC we are taught to question everything we hear. However, the reaction to last assembly’s announcement
of the blue army generals was a perfect example of that complacency which we are taught to avoid. From the unenthu-
siastic response, we can assume that the student body, neglected as they were during the decision making pracess, was
somewhat discontented. According to the election committee, 5 criteria points required fulfilling Humor, Creativity,
Reliability, Spirit/Energy, and the ability to persuade and inspire others.
Many of you may remember the Friday assembly, held a couple of weeks prior to the Easter weekend when the
four finalists were called up to the stage to give the school a taste of their qualifications. What point was there in enter-
taining this showdown when only 3 individuals (the current and previous athletic and head steward) would be making the
decision? During the assembly, the final four candidates all displayed elements of the five criteria (listed above). Humor
was consistently exhibited and appeared to be the strongest attribute of all four candidates. From Charlie Burgess’s com-
ments on what he would like to fill his swimming pool with ({t was women for those of you who forgot) to more contro-
versial comments concerning St. Mikes’s superiority to UCC regarding ‘lax’, humor undoubtedly played a leading role
in this assembly. However, speaking of sending one’s son to SMC for better lacrosse development, even when joking,
is insulting to our school and a questionable statement to make. Especially coming from one of our newly elected blue
amy general
NEW SCHOOL HYMN?
With the IB2's so generously donating a new school hymn, which embodies Canadian patriotism while still respect-
ing the school's heritage, (topnotch leaving class gift lads) we here at the Blue Page thought we'd try our hand at hymn
selection. The following hymn brings forth a few of our respected Mayor's short (and wide) comings, while undeniably
remaining reverent. Pethaps we'll be singing it in assembly next year
‘Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Ford:
He is marching into downtown where the gravy vats are stored,
He hath loosed the fateful vengeance of his terrible swift sword
Our Ford is marching on
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Our Ford is marching on
Ihave seen him on the doorstep of so many suburban homes,
They have tunneled him a subway and constructed a great throne,
I shall call and he shall answer on his righteous telephone
Our Ford is marching on

FLAWED ELECTIONS CONTINUED.
‘What drove the knife in deeper was the fact that
the election committee, though present at the assembly,
completely disregarded the audience’s reactions to the
candidates’ antics. According to the committee, “the
assembly wasn’t our idea”. Their logic was therefore,
because the assembly wasn’t their idea, they would try
to base their decision solely off the interview, assessing
the 5 criteria in each candidate. Clearly this was mis-
guided as 800 minds think better than three. Such disre-
gard for the assembly seems largely unacceptable as the
assembly showcased the candidates’ ability to persuade
and inspire others, as well as highlighting their capacity
for humor, spirit and energy.
Being a dedicated Blues fan, I felt it was my
duty to write this article to address the issue from the
people’s opinion. My goal of writing this article is to
get you guys to speak up about the decisions that have
been made. The Blue Army Generals are very impor-
tant, they are responsible for representing the school at
games and are supposed to lead the people. How can
they be effective leaders if the people are not satisfied
with them as generals? I urge you to let the elections
committee know ifyou are discontented with the results
or selection process, The criteria used to choose the
generals were sound, but ultimately the final decision
‘was not representive of the student body. Let’s right this
wrong, and may the Blue Amy have many successful
endeavors in the future
