High Energy Rate Forming (HERF)

Process Principle, Types, Application and Summary

Process Principle
HERF refers to a process that form parts at very high velocities and pressure. Most distinguishing feature is the high forming velocity rather than energy. All HERF processes involve a short, sharp, forming energy input in microseconds. Energy levels depends up on the application and can vary from 10 joule to 109 Joule.

Electromagnetic Forming
Used for forming electrically conductive work pieces. W/P placed in the proximity of the magnetic pulse created by electrically driven magnetic coil. During electrical pulse, eddy current created with in the part act to resist the force. Resulting force b/w magnetic field and eddy currents deforms the part. Force will be approx 410 MPa (60,000 Psi)
