Aspen Process Engineering Console stores all the data from these programs in a folder named for the project and lets you organize your projects so you can find the data you need quickly and easily.
More Information
Aspen Process Engineering Console works with version V7.1 of the above AspenTech products. It does not work with earlier versions. Aspen Process Engineering Console is included and installed with Aspen Plus and Aspen HYSYS; it does not consume tokens. The Aspen Process Development Console is included and installed with Aspen Batch Process Developer; it does not consume tokens.
13
Aspen Process Engineering Console is a desktop-based program. To share projects over a network, you can save an entire project as an .aoprj file containing all the files associated with the project. This file can be shared or stored in standard document management systems such as SharePoint or Documentum. Aspen Process Engineering Console stores data in projects. A project contains: Standard physical property data (components, thermodynamics, etc.) Equipment models (heat exchangers) Simulation case files Analysis files (energy analysis, economic analysis, etc.)
Aspen Process Engineering Console is workflow-oriented. It is set up to allow you to develop a project by: Specifying properties Creating simulations Running analysis against the simulation files Extracting data for detailed equipment analysis
Activities in Aspen Process Engineering Console have specific actions for creating and editing models. The Project Explorer lets you manage files related to your project, and sort them by case or by activity. Icons in the console indicate the status of applications, and link to the product information pages on AspenTech's Web site. You can open multiple economic analyses and compare them side by side. Most importantly, Aspen Process Engineering Console automates the flow of data between applications. For example, you can extract all the heat exchangers from a simulation model and easily model them in heat exchanger design tools.
14
15
Compatibility Notes
Aspen Process Engineering Console V7.1 can be installed and used at the same time as version V7.0 of Aspen Process Engineering Console. Each version works with other AspenTech engineering applications of the same version.

This interface provides an interactive method of selecting which data to send to the costing analysis, and options for selecting equipment to represent the unit operation models. The unit operation summary grid presents all relevant data from unit operation models in a convenient grid, using the same interface in both Aspen Plus and Aspen HYSYS:
17
18
The following features are available in both the Equipment Summary and the Unit Operation Summary. Hold the Shift or Control key to select multiple blocks for use with the buttons. The Group field for each unit operation model lets you enter a text label to describe each block. You can right-click in the list of variable names to access additional commands for sorting, changing units, and filtering data. You can sort the blocks in any tab by the value of any field (including Group). You can select the units of measure for any set of variables. Toggle Filters enables a filter feature which allows you to only show blocks matching a chosen filter value on any given field(s). The filtering options include specific values, Blanks, Non-Blanks, and Custom filters which can contain a combination of equalities, inequalities, substrings at start/end/anywhere, and regular expressions. In Aspen Plus, these grids are both included under the Results Summary in the Data Browser.

The objectives of the CME framework are: CME will enable the use of Rigorous Engineering Models in Planning, Scheduling to facilitate greater accuracy and range of prediction. It will also enable use of simplified model types from Planning applications to be used in Engineering applications to increase scope of the engineering model, for example, users will be able to create a Refinery-wide simulation by using models derived from Planning applications and Engineering applications. Allow extensions to the model format. This enables more information to be authored and persisted with the model to assist incorporation of CME models authored in one application into another host application. Reduce or eliminate effort required for mapping of inputs/outputs of integrated model instances. CME model instances are self-contained and can be run in a standalone mode within applications with CME capability. These applications include:
o o o
Aspen PIMS Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining (formerly Aspen RefSYS) Aspen Refinery Scheduler (formerly Aspen ORIONXT)
In Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining V7.1 the capability of authoring a CME model is introduced. A new utility Common Model Utility allows users to generate in simulation environment CME models which can then be imported into other applications such as Aspen PIMS and Aspen Refinery Scheduler. It is useful to build such CME models in HYSYS for complex models such as
21
refinery reactors (Hydrocracker, FCC, Reformer, etc) which are typically based on several tens of thousands of equations and variables. These models are usually calibrated to fit the plant data. The CME model would try to represent such a complex system in a simplified form in terms of user selected model independent and dependent variables. The CME models built in V7.1 are linear models representing the dependent model variables (product flow rates, product properties, etc) as a linear combination of independent variables (feed flow rates, feed properties, reactor parameters, etc). The coefficients in these models are calculated based on derivatives calculated automatically by the program.
Figure: CME model authoring capabilities in Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining V7.1
The other way in which a CME model can be generated is from PIMS submodels or ACM models using the CME-Visual Executive. However when using the Visual Executive, the user needs to manually assign attributes (such as physical type, units, connection types, etc) to the variables and organize variables into standard CME ports. The advantage when generating the CME model in HYSYS is that the model variables are automatically assigned the right attributes and organized into the standard CME ports, thus making the model ready to be seamlessly loaded into PIMS and Refinery Scheduler.

It is now possible to configure APED so that the registered databanks are selected for each user, rather than for all users on one computer. See the Aspen Properties Database Manager help for configuration instructions. A testing program is available to troubleshoot problems with accessing the Aspen Properties Enterprise Databank. Run Start | Programs | AspenTech | Process Modeling V7.0 | Aspen Properties | Aspen Properties Database Configuration Tester, and click the Start button. New security option for the enterprise database allows you to distribute copies of the database which can be used in Aspen Plus without exposing any of the parameter values in the database.
32
GAMUS in that GAMUS is based on the actual solvent mixture, while GAMUSAQ is based on pure water. New Prop-Set properties added for total true species molar and mass flow rates, total apparent components molar and mass flow rates, and total apparent components 2nd-liquid molar and mass flow rates.
33
Engineering Enhancements
Measurement blocks now support the Solution Method and Always Instantiate EO-Options. The Generate Estimates feature of RCSTR will now include polymer class 1 and 2 component attributes in the estimates.
34
MCompr now reports profiles of head developed and volumetric flow rate in each stage. Pressure Relief can now handle solids (only in referenced streams), including CISOLID and NC substreams, and reactions involving solids, including reactions across different substreams. In Compr and MCompr, when extrapolating beyond surge/stonewall for tabular performance curve data, the default is to extend the spline method used for interpolation. When extrapolating far beyond the given data, this can lead to undesirable behavior, such as curves trending in the wrong direction. A new option on the Performance Curves | Curve Setup sheet in Compr and the Performance Curves | Options sheet in MCompr allows you to instead extrapolate using the tangent to the end of the curve.
35
Fortran Compiler
Aspen Plus V7.0 was compiled with the Intel Fortran compiler version 9.1 build 33 and Microsoft Visual studio 2005 SP1. User Fortran models compiled with different compilers or compiler versions might not work, or might run but not be able to write to the Aspen Plus history file, report file, and control panel. See Chapter 1 of Aspen Plus User Models on the Documentation DVD for more details.
Reboiler Return
The default feed convention for reboiler returns has been changed from Onstage to Above-stage, as on-stage is rarely used in practice. Important: This might lead to different results in cases where the reboiler return convention was left unspecified. If you require the old behavior, specify On-stage explicitly.
User Models
The length of IRETN in the flash utility FLSH_FLASH has been changed from 6 to 2*NCC+16 (NCC is the number of conventional components, available as
36
NCOMP_NCC in common DMS_NCOMP). Code which relied on this vector being a fixed length might need to be updated.
Retired Models
The BatchFrac, RateFrac, Hetran, Aerotran, and HTRI-Xist unit operation models are no longer supported, and no longer available as of version V7.0. When you open files from previous versions containing these blocks: Hetran and Aerotran blocks are converted to rigorous HeatX blocks using Aspen Hetran or Aspen Aerotran. This conversion should generate the same results as past versions. A button on the HeatX | Setup | Specifications sheet will allow you to convert these blocks (as well as HeatX blocks using Aspen TASC) to use the newer Aspen Shell & Tube Exchanger (Shell & Tube, formerly Aspen Tasc+) and Aspen Air Cooled Exchanger (AirCooled, formerly Aspen Acol+) programs. This change will cause different results, but the results are based on updated heat exchanger research and should be more accurate than the results of the older programs. Note: TASC, Hetran, and Aerotran will be discontinued in the next version of Aspen Engineering. We strongly encourage you to upgrade to Shell & Tube and AirCooled now. BatchFrac, RateFrac, and HTRI-Xist models present in the flowsheet will be deleted. Please convert these models to supported models (such as BatchSep, rate-based RadFrac and rigorous HeatX) in version 2006.5 before upgrading to V7.0.
37
If you have created databases in a previous version of the Aspen Properties Enterprise Database, and they are on the same SQL server as in the previous version, you do not need to back up and restore them, but you do need to register them in the new version of Aspen Properties Database Manager in order to use them in version V7.0 products. The Aspen Properties Enterprise Database and legacy databanks were rigorously checked to ensure that they contain the same data (except for new features such as NIST-TRC only present in the enterprise database). In doing so, some errors were detected and fixed. This may result in differences from previous versions if you were using any of the erroneous data. Changes in the legacy databanks: Pure component parameters for component HE-4 (helium) used with the PENG-ROB, RK-SOAVE, PR-BM, and RKS-BM methods were missing. The values for NOATOM and ATOMNO for component AIR were missing from PURE11 and newer versions of the pure component database. For components with CPIG, UFGRP, UFGRPD or UFGRPL available from more than one databank, if some elements were missing in the first databank searched, past versions would fill these in with values from a subsequent databank. Now it properly preserves the complete parameter vector, including reporting missing values as missing. When one of the Pitzer binary parameters GMPTB0 or GMPTTH is specified, the other parameters from GMPTB0, GMPTB1, GMPTB2, GMPTB3, GMPTC, and GMPTTH for this component pair should not be retrieved from databanks by the Aspen Plus simulation engine. Previous versions were retrieving this data when it was not specified in the simulation. Now this works as intended. Electrolyte pair parameters GMELCC, GMELCD, GMELCE, and GMELCN always behaved correctly. In certain cases when binary parameters were available for the same pair from multiple databanks, past versions of APED would not always follow the database search order, and in some cases would use the data from a less-preferred databank. Now it follows the search order in all cases. This may cause different results if you were using APED and you have different data for a pair in different databanks. The last element of THRSWT was missing for component HNO3 in the ELECPURE databank. This caused some data for some components to appear missing. The UNIFAC-DMD groups (UFGRPD) for 20 aldehyde components were incorrect in the PURE93, PURE10, and PURE11 databanks. This problem occurred because multiple input files were used to generate these databanks, and the same parameters appeared for these components in multiple input files, partly missing in some files, with the intent of merging them. Note: This type of merge of data does not work when loading legacy files into Aspen Properties Enterprise Database. Each parameter for each component should be specified only once across the entire set of input files for a databank, including missing specifications. Be aware of this when loading your own custom databank files into the enterprise database.
38
While the enterprise database and the legacy databanks contain the same data, since the SQL database and the legacy databanks store numbers in different ways, there may be differing round-off error in the last digit (specify nth digit) of some values. In most cases, this will not make any difference in simulations. In certain borderline cases (particularly in rigorous distillation) which barely converge, this may cause them to not converge, and some cases which did not converge may now converge.
39
performed, and instead the full flooding capacity predicted by the equation is used. This may cause different results if you use this method.
40
The most important areas where you might encounter differences between Aspen Plus V7.1 and earlier versions are:
Retired Models
A converter available from the AspenTech Support web site will allow you to convert HeatX blocks using Aspen TASC and Aspen Hetran to use the newer Aspen Shell & Tube Exchanger (Shell & Tube, formerly Aspen Tasc+) and convert blocks using Aspen Aerotran to use Aspen Air Cooled Exchanger (AirCooled, formerly Aspen Acol+). This change will cause different results, but the results are based on updated heat exchanger research and should be more accurate than the results of the older programs. Important: This (V7.1) is the last version of Aspen Plus and Aspen Exchanger Design & Rating that will support TASC, Hetran, and Aerotran. We strongly encourage you to upgrade to Shell & Tube and AirCooled now. Aspen TASC is not included with the current version of Aspen Exchanger Design & Rating. In order to use the legacy TASC program with HeatX in Aspen Plus V7.1, you must install Aspen TASC 2006.5. In order to use the converter, you must install both the program you are converting from (Aspen TASC 2006.5, Aspen Hetran, or Aspen Aerotran) and the program you are converting to (Shell & Tube or AirCooled).
All settings in TASC and most settings in Hetran and Aerotran can be represented precisely in Shell & Tube and AirCooled. The following features of Hetran and Aerotran are not supported (along with the result after using the converter):
Hetran To EDR Shell & Tube
Heat exchanger standards design is not supported. (Design mode is selected.) Wolverine Turbo tubes and Wolverine Korodense tubes are not supported. (You must specify enhancement data under Methods | Correlation input.) Rotated baffle cut is not supported. (Horizontal cut is selected.) Strip baffles are not supported. (Must select alternative.) V type shell is not supported. (J shell is selected.) Non-isobaric curve is not supported. (Isobaric curve type is selected.)
41
Outside flow specified heat transfer coefficient is not supported. (Flow must be specified based on bare tube surface area.) Non-isobaric curve is not supported. (Isobaric curve type is selected.)
CAPE-OPEN Improvements
Aspen Plus now supports CAPE-OPEN flash as part of a CAPE-OPEN Property Package when performing flash calculations for streams, property-sets, Flash blocks and other unit operation models. If you import a CAPE-OPEN 1.0 property package containing a flash model, Aspen Plus will now use that model instead of using its own routines. This may produce different results if you were using such CAPE-OPEN packages with previous versions of Aspen
42
Plus. An option on the Properties | CAPE-OPEN Packages form for the package allows you to use the Aspen Plus flash model instead of the one from the package. Important: Calculations within a CAPE-OPEN unit operation model always use the flash model of the CAPE-OPEN thermo package, even if you selected the Aspen Plus flash on the CAPE-OPEN Packages form. Aspen Plus now provides improved support for importing CAPE-OPEN packages generated from Aspen Plus and Aspen Properties. It is no longer necessary to specify the correct Property Method on the CAPE-OPEN Packages form to fully reproduce the behavior of the package in these cases. All the property specifications (property methods, Henry components ID, freewater method, water solubility method, solution chemistry ID, and true or apparent component approach), property parameter values, and other user modifications are fully imported into the current simulation. If you were using a CAPE-OPEN package generated by Aspen Plus or Aspen Properties within an Aspen Plus simulation in past versions without matching the property method on the CAPE-OPEN Packages form to the method used in the package, you may see different results in V7.1.
STMNBS2 Corrections
Some errors were corrected in the property calculations of the STMNBS2 steam table method. The changes include: Correct formulation of Helmholtz energy (used to calculate Gibbs energy and entropy) Rigorous fugacity coefficient calculation from Gibbs energy. This property used to be "ideal" in past versions.
The changes affect calculation of fugacity coefficient (PHI, PHIMX), enthalpy (H, HMX), entropy (S, SMX), and Gibbs energy (G, GMX) and their derivatives. Different values of these properties should be expected: In simulation models using the STMNBS2 method In simulation models with STMNBS2 as free-water method, if free-water phase is present, or when water solubility option 0 or 5 is selected (in which case the free-water method is used to calculate fugacity coefficients of water, even if free-water is not selected in Valid Phases)
This may lead to different phase equilibrium and compressor/turbine results in these simulations. Enthalpy values calculated by the old version were valid. Every effort was made to keep the enthalpy values unchanged. Entropy results may differ by 1-10% in some simulations. Compressor power output (due to the entropy change) may be affected up to 10%. K-values of water (due to the fugacity change) may be affected 2-3%. A second option code has been added to the ESSTEAM and ESSTEAM0 models, with default value = 1, which includes all of the above corrections when these models are used by STMNBS2. With this option code set to 0, only the Helmholtz energy is corrected; this means that, with this option code, the entropy and Gibbs energy will be different but the enthalpy and fugacity coefficient from STMNBS2 will be the same as in previous versions. Setting this 2nd option code to 0 will allow you to reproduce old simulation
43
results in most cases, except entropy of the streams will be different. Compressor/turbine results may be different than in past versions even with this option, due to the changed entropy.
44
be flagged as incorrect, but only by the engine, where it will result in an input translation error. If you encounter this error, you should specify element 2 of DHVLWT, the temperature corresponding to the heat of vaporization value provided in element 1. Future versions will catch this error on the form and mark it incomplete when element 2 is missing. A problem that can occur with very large infinite dilution activity coefficients was fixed. This problem usually led to a Fortran error, but if your model was set to continue after such errors, you would get wrong results which have been corrected in this version. A problem that can occur when estimating binary parameters using the SRPOLAR property method was fixed. This may give different results for components with very low vapor pressure.
Pressure Relief
Pressure Relief now handles solids correctly when they appear in referenced streams, including CISOLID and NC substreams, and reactions involving solids, including reactions across different substreams. In some cases it may
45
have been possible to run Pressure Relief with solids in the past, but the results may not have been correct.

Issue Resolution Fixed default for liquid Gibbs energy reference state (DGLFRM) for WILS-GLR property method. The previous default used was missing the vapor Gibbs energy departure term. Fixed incorrect activity coefficient property calculations for PSRK, RKSMHV2 and PRMHV2 methods. COTA files located in folders with very long folder names or folder names containing the character & could not be loaded. This fix will allow users to use the & character as well as long folder names The MaterialObject Duplicate function had an incorrect implementation leading to erroneous behavior with 3rd party CapeOpen unit operations that called the Duplicate function. This issue is now resolved. The MaterialObject that is passed to a CapeOpen unit operation contains the Overall Enthalpy, thereby enabling several more CapeOpen unit operations to function more easily with Aspen Plus A key issue that was addressed in Aspen Plus is that now we can have component names with longer than 8 characters allowed for components belonging to the CapeOpen property package.

including most of the elements in the periodic table. The OLI property method provides accurate results for the thermodynamic and transport properties of aqueous mixtures and associated immiscible organic mixtures. Aspen OLI Interface refers to the interface that enables you to use OLI products and capabilities within the Aspen Engineering Suite environment. This manual provides instructions on how to use the combined features of the Aspen OLI Interface and the software you license separately from OLI Systems Inc. We refer to these combined products as Aspen OLI.
Easier Installation
There is no longer a need to install the OLI alliance files from the Aspen Plus Simulation Engine window. This is now handled automatically when you install the files. You still need to install the OLI Alliance Suite from the installer delivered in the Aspen OLI Interface installation folder.
Compatibility Notes
Aspen OLI Interface V7.0 and V7.1 can be installed and used at the same time as version 2006.5 and other previous versions of Aspen OLI Interface.
Aspen Properties
Product Description
Aspen Properties is AspenTech's physical property calculation and analysis tool. You can use Aspen Properties to prepare a complete property package to represent an industrial process for use with Aspen Plus, Aspen Plus Dynamics (Aspen Dynamics), Aspen Custom Modeler, and Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining (RefSYS), and Aspen Exchanger Design and Rating (HTFS+). Batch
54
Process Developer (Batch Plus) also uses Aspen Properties to model non-ideal solutions for vapor emissions calculations. You can use Aspen Properties to estimate a wide range of properties from molecular structure, regress parameters from laboratory data, and analyze the behavior of chemical and petroleum systems.
Parameter estimation of user-defined components using NIST TDE now uses vapor pressure, liquid density, ideal gas heat capacity, and normal boiling point data if it is specified, in addition to the molecular structure. Literature citations for raw NIST data are now available in the Properties from NIST/TDE Dialog Box and are saved as comments to the Properties | Data | Pure-Comp forms when saving data to forms. On the Evaluated Results tab of the Properties from NIST/TDE Dialog Box you can click Reevaluate to regenerate these results for a different range of temperature or number of points. Compound classes (such as alcohols and ketones) added for components in NIST database. New property method REFPROP provides extremely accurate equations of state for mixtures of 84 common components, based on NIST data. See the help for REFPROP for a list of the components which can be used with this method. Usability Enhancements
On the Properties | Specifications | Global sheet, the default process type is now COMMON rather than ALL. This reduces the Base Method list to 16 commonly used methods. To access other methods, select a relevant Process type, or ALL. The Properties | Parameters | Binary Interaction forms now have a Search button. Use this button to select any component pair and jump to where the data for that pair is specified.

Fortran Compiler
Aspen Properties V7.0 was compiled with the Intel Fortran compiler version 9.1 build 33 and Microsoft Visual studio 2005 SP1. User Fortran models compiled with different compilers or compiler versions might not work, or might run but not be able to write to the Aspen Plus history file, report file, and control panel. See Chapter 1 of Aspen Plus User Models on the Documentation DVD for more details.
User Models
The length of IRETN in the flash utility FLSH_FLASH has been changed from 6 to 2*NCC+16 (NCC is the number of conventional components, available as NCOMP_NCC in common DMS_NCOMP). Code which relied on this vector being a fixed length may need to be updated.
60
This might cause different results if you were using APED and you have different data for a pair in different databanks.

CAPE-OPEN Improvements
Aspen Properties now supports CAPE-OPEN flash. If you import a CAPE-OPEN 1.0 property package containing a flash model, Aspen Properties will now use that model instead of using its own routines. This may produce different results if you were using such CAPE-OPEN packages with previous versions of Aspen Properties. An option on the Properties | CAPE-OPEN Packages form for the package allows you to use the Aspen Properties flash model instead of the one from the package. Aspen Properties now provides improved support for importing CAPE-OPEN packages generated from Aspen Plus and Aspen Properties. If you were using a CAPE-OPEN package generated by Aspen Plus or Aspen Properties within an Aspen Properties simulation in past versions without matching the property method on the CAPE-OPEN Packages form to the method used in the package, you may see different results in V7.1.
63
Setting this 2nd option code to 0 will allow you to reproduce old simulation results in most cases, except entropy of the streams will be different. Compressor/turbine results may be different than in past versions even with this option, due to the changed entropy.
64
65
simulations containing helium using SR-POLAR will be different in V7.1, but the new ones should be more accurate.

As in Aspen Plus, the Model Library toolbar appears docked to the bottom of the Aspen Plus Dynamics application window and organizes the model library into tabs. It behaves just like the Aspen Plus model library and improves the workflow for creating control schemes, adding pressure relief equipment, and making other changes to the flowsheet. Only models which are self initializing should be created within Aspen Plus Dynamics (for example, controllers, pressure relief equipment, pipe). Distillation columns should be created within Aspen Plus; you can then use Update Dynamics to add the new block to an existing flowsheet.
Radfrac Option to Convert to Using External Condenser for Detailed Control Studies
Automatically reconfigure a Radfrac column with a condenser into an external condenser in Aspen Plus Dynamics. Key benefits of external condenser: Allows detailed modeling of the overhead system without having to configure it in Aspen Plus (which may be difficult to converge). Use only the Radfrac block in Aspen Plus and then use this new feature to expand the overhead system. Users can then add pumps, heat exchangers, etc. to expand the overhead system Note: adding instantaneous models in standalone dynamics is straightforward if you set flashbasis to procedure. Allows detailed control system to be modeled, accessing the PVs/MVs in the expanded overhead system.
To use this feature, select External_Condenser from the column scripts menu. (See the following screen capture.) This results in a fully specified multi-block Radfrac model with an external condenser. No additional initialization efforts are required.

Robustness/Performance Enhancements
Improve Dynamic Simulation Performance Using Stream Tearing
For flow driven simulations with recycle streams and for all pressure driven simulations, dynamic simulation performance can be improved by using stream tearing. In Aspen Plus Dynamics, stream tearing has been incorporated into the MaterialStream stream type and the Valve model. Tearing in the MaterialStream is activated via a check box on the Configure form. This should ONLY be used for recycle streams in flow driven. For pressure-driven simulations, you must use a Valve model to tear the stream. The Valve model includes the pressure/flow derivatives to update the torn stream flow variable. The TearStream parameter on Valves Configure form has 3 options: No (default) Deactivate stream tearing Full Tear recycle streams PF-Only Tear the pressure-flow network in non-recycle streams
For details and examples on how to use this new feature, see Improve Dynamic Simulation Performance Using Stream Tearing in the online help.
Engineering Enhancements
PID Support Vendor Specific Control Algorithms
Aspen Plus Dynamics now supports some of the key industrial vendors PID algorithms. The implementation has been given to PIDIncr model within ControlModels. This means the same tuning parameters used in the model can be used directly with the actual controllers (and visa versa). As the model is using the documented algorithms, its behavior should match the real controller behavior. The implemented vendor specific control algorithms and their PID equation types are: Foxboro algorithm

Compatibility Notes
Here lists problems you may encounter with release V7.0 and V7.1 when opening dynamic simulations created by earlier versions of the software. Rstoic and Ryield "CSTR" option - Run "upgrade" script for each old snapshot in V7.0 and V7.1 Rgibbs does not support "CSTR" Option in V7.0 and V7.1 Flash 2 does not use the Out_Relief Port in V7.0 and V7.1
Rstoic and Ryield CSTR Option Run Upgrade Script for Each Old Snapshot
In earlier releases, CSTR option was modeled by mixing the feed streams into a dynamic vessel. The mixed output of the vessel was then fed into an instantaneous adiabatic reactor. In 2006, the dynamic vessel follows the instantaneous reaction so that the products from the reactor are at the same conditions as the dynamic vessel. Thus when opening an existing dynamic simulation in 2006 the vessel will be initialized at the feed conditions, but in order to reach steady state, the tank conditions must change to the product conditions. We have provided an Upgrade script for Aspen Dynamic 2006 which will operate on all Rstoic and Ryield models in the flowsheet (including those in hierarchies) calculating the initial conditions of the vessel using the results from the older simulation. Run the script prior to performing an Initialization run so that the script can use the results from the previous simulation. You can also run the script immediately after applying a snapshot saved from the existing simulation. The script is invoked simply by double-clicking Upgrade in the scripts folder of the Aspen Dynamics library.
Rgibbs Does Not Support CSTR Option User Must Add a Dynamic Mixer to Simulate a Tank
In earlier releases Rgibbs supported the CSTR option. As with Rstoic and Ryield this option was modeled by mixing the feed streams into a dynamic vessel, the mixed output of the vessel was then fed into an instantaneous adiabatic reactor. The CSTR option has been withdrawn from Rgibbs at 2006. If you wish to model an Rgibbs reactor dynamically you should add a mixer to the product stream(s) and specify the mixer vessel geometry on its dynamic form.

streams allowed) Out_Relief (Vapor relief port 0 or many streams allowed) Not supported
In version 2006, we have removed the Out_Relief port and made it possible for you to connect multiple streams to the Out_V port to connect to relief devices. We have also made it possible to connect multiple streams to the Out_L port. The Out_Relief port is still included in the model allowing simulations which used the Out_Relief port to load correctly but the problem will be underspecified. Users must reconnect relief streams from the Out_Relief port to the Out_V port in order to be able to run the simulation.

Compatibility Notes
Aspen Adsorption V7.0 and V7.1 can be installed and used at the same time as version 2006.5 and other previous versions of Aspen Adsorption. However, observe following compatibility issues when upgrading your existing simulations to V7.0 or V7.1: The ImpEuler (11.), VSIE (11.1), and Gear (11.1) integrators were old implementations that have been superseded by the Implicit Euler and Gear integrators that were introduced in the 12.1 release. They were included in the 12.1, 2004, and 2004.1 versions to give time for transition of existing simulations to the new integrators. These integrators have been withdrawn from version 2006 and later. If you load a simulation that uses one of these integrators it will automatically switch to using the equivalent newer integrator, and will select option and tolerance values that match the old integrator as closely as possible. Aspen Adsorption Language (.ada) files generated using previous versions of Aspen Adsorption are compatible with V7.0 and V7.1. You may see some warning messages when loading .ada files created with previous versions. This is a result of some solver options that have become obsolete or have been renamed. Saving the file in Aspen Adsorption V7.0 or V7.1 eliminates these warnings. Aspen Adsorption Document (.adb) files exported from previous versions Aspen Adsorption cannot be loaded in Version V7.0 or V7.1. Load these files into the previous version and export them as .ada files, which can then be loaded into V7.0 or V7.1. Note when using Aspen Properties/Aspen Plus property package: If your Aspen Adsorption V7.0 or V7.1 input file includes the Aspen Properties property package, you can load it directly into Aspen Adsorption V7.0 or V7.1. If you are using an external property package in the form of an Aspen Plus .appdf file or an Aspen Properties .aprpdf file, then these files created with earlier versions of that software are not compatible with Aspen Adsorption V7.0 or V7.1. If you try to load a physical properties file (.appdf or .aprpdf) that was generated using an earlier version of Aspen Plus or Aspen Properties, the following error message appears: Aspen Properties abort Unable to open properties definition file "n2psa.appdf" The file may need to be regenerated from a compatible version of Aspen Plus After you receive this error, exit Aspen Adsorption before loading any further simulations. To continue, you must regenerate the .appdf or .aprpdf file using Aspen Plus V7.0 or V7.1 or Aspen Properties V7.0 or V7.1.

Model Library
A NOXEstimator model was added to estimate the non-linear NOX emission from combustion models such Boiler, Gas turbine, HRSG, etc. The non-linearity is handled by piecewise linearization in the optimization. AS_HeatEx model allows shutdown and startup. UpdateContract and UpdateAvailability scripts were added to allow model to update the contract and availability profiles respectively in online optimization. Related variables for availability profiles and contract information are added in the On_Line form for each block. The Psout(*) and Tsout(*) variables were added to the summary table in DriveList model. Corrected a defect in the Stm_turb model: when the constant efficiency method is selected the coefficient a in the optimization equation of Power = a * Steam is wrong.
90
Compatibility Notes
There are no database changes in Aspen Utilities Planner V7.1 compared to version V7.0, version 2006.5 or version 2004.2 CP2. Therefore, there is no need to run the Database Converter.
Aspen Reaction Modeler is included as part of Aspen Batch Distillation. It can also be used by licensees of Aspen BatchCAD. When you run Aspen Reaction Modeler it will look for an Aspen Batch Distillation license, and if it can find one it will use this. If it cannot find one it will then look for an Aspen BatchCAD license and use this. If neither license is found it will not start. Aspen Reaction Modeler includes access to Aspen Properties for physical property calculations, this does not require a separate Aspen Properties license. For systems which contain new molecules that are not included in the Aspen Properties databanks, you have the option to estimate properties using a simpler method that only requires basic data such as density and heat capacity.
91
Usability Improvements
Aspen Reaction Modeler V7.1 contains the following enhancements to improve usability:
92
Fitting runs can now be interrupted using the Interrupt button on the Fitting Cases form. A Fitting Progress node has now been added to tree browser to enable easy monitoring of diagnostic messages from the calculation engine. The copy/paste functionality has been improved to enable easy transfer of data between any table on the user interface and Excel.
Compatibility Notes
Aspen Reaction Modeler V7.1 can be installed and used at the same time as V7.0 and other previous versions of Aspen Reaction Modeler. There are no known compatibility issues with Aspen Reaction Modeler.

available to users now. Some key examples of additional thermodynamic calculation capabilities include Benedict-Webb-Rubin-Lee-Starling, Electrolyte NRTL, and Electrolyte NRTL with HF.
Electrolyte Capabilities
Several chemical process calculations involve electrolytic applications. The new capabilities enable the user to analyze and optimize processes involving ionic species, complex ions, and salt precipitation, with strong acids, weak acids, and bases. Examples of applications for electrolyte process calculation with the Aspen Physical Property System include: Sour water stripping Caustic brine evaporation and crystallization Acid gas removal Nitric acid separation Black liquor evaporation
The Economic Evaluation features can also be accessed via Tools | Aspen Economic Evaluation in the tools menu. (An Aspen Process Economic Analyzer license is required to enable the commands.) See the Integrated Sizing and Costing section in chapter 2, Aspen Integration Projects, and the online help Tools and Utilities section for details on this feature.
Hydrates Utility
The Hydrates Utility has been enhanced to support Structure H hydrates in addition to Structures I and II. The Structure H hydrate requires two types of molecules in its formation: A small Structure H former (methane, nitrogen, or xenon) A large Structure H former (isopentane, neohexane, 2,3-dimethylbutane, 2,2,3-trimethylbutane, 2,2-dimethylpentane, 3,3-dimethylpentane, 2,3dimethyl-1-butene, 3,3-dimethyl-1-butene, cyclooctane, cycloheptane, methylcyclopentane, ethylcyclopentane, methylcyclohexane, cis-1,2dimethylcyclohexane, 1,1-dimethylcyclohexane, ethylcyclohexane, ciscyclooctene, or cycloheptene)
96
Therefore, to obtain the Structure H prediction, the given stream must consist of at least one small Structure H former and one large Structure H former. In addition, Structure H hydrates can only form under the Vapor-Liquid-Aqueous condition. This enhancement is based the work of Mehta and Sloan [E.D. Sloan, Clathrate hydrates of natural gases, 2nd edition, 1998, 705pp].
Process Utilities
In this version, HYSYS introduces the concept of process utilities. Users can tag and designate material and energy streams as utilities. With this information HYSYS can calculate the utility consumption per utility type as well as total hot/cold utility consumption in the flowsheet. This new functionality is provided through the flowsheet summary and it can be done at the flowsheet level or for a selected-flowsheet scope. To support this new function a process utility manager user interface is provided (Tools | Process Utility Manager). HYSYS provides a number of built-in utilities with defined heat capacity and temperature range as well as other physical properties. Users can customize it by adding user-defined utilities. The process utility manager has full automation support as well with integration with HX-Net, namely utilities defined in the HYSYS utility manager can be exported to HX-Net and vice-versa.
97
The reboiler can be a regular HYSYS reboiler, a heater, or a heat exchanger. A new page is added to the Performance tab to report the key reboiler/condenser results.
Centrifugal Compressors
Head Calculation Methods In this version, HYSYS introduces two new approaches for the polytropic head calculation: the Huntington and Reference Methods. Both are described in detail in R.A. Huntington, Journal of Engineering for Turbines and Power,
98
1985. Both methods are applicable when performance curves are defined and when they are not used. Huntington Method Unlike the Schultz method this method does not assume a polytropic path of the form PV = C . This method uses the definition of the polytropic path H = Vdp (where H is compressor Head) combined with the Maxwell equation
n
dh = Tds + Vdp . This yields the general relationship of the entropy derivative 1 e dP along the polytropic path dS = R . Z e P
To integrate this equation, Huntington found that a relationship of the form Z = a + b(P / P1 ) + c ln (P / P1 ) yields results that are more accurate than the Schultz method. Huntington compared the results against those obtained using the reference method (see below). Currently, this method is supported only in HYSYS Steady-State. Reference Method This method is based on the numerical integration of the equations that define a polytropic path H = Vdp and H = edh , without any assumption regarding the form of the polytropic path or the compressibility factor dependency on pressure. The integration method requires the polytropic efficiency to be constant so it can be used only when the user specifies a value for the polytropic efficiency or when the performance curves have been defined for polytropic efficiency. HYSYS currently supports this method only in Steady State. Performance Curves: Off-Design Corrections Based on dimensional analysis, the performance curves can be corrected due to departures in temperature, pressure, and molecular weight relative to the values at design conditions. Two new parameters can be entered for the performance curves: Design Temperature and Design Molecular Weight. When these are supplied, HYSYS then corrects the inlet volumetric flow rate to the equivalent design conditions flow rate. Using the curves, one obtains a design-conditions Head that can be converted to a working-conditions Head based again on non-dimensional analysis. OffDesign Corrections are supported in both steady-state and dynamics.
99
state into one fuel and air stream in Dynamics. It will also split the same stream into air and one fuel stream when returning to steady state.
Optimizer
Hyprotech SQP Optimizer Monitor Users can now monitor the convergence of the Hyprotech SQP solver in HYSYS Optimizer. The Monitor tab displays the summary of convergence by providing the Iteration number, the Objective Function value, and Variable values with names and appropriate units after completion of each major optimization iteration during the convergence of the algorithm. Min/Max of the Objective Function Users can now specify the direction of optimization (Min/Max of Objective Function) within the Optimizer window of Hyprotech SQP and MDC Optimizers.
Pipe Segment
Working in pipe segments you now can: Create a new pipe segment by cloning existing segments. Show absolute values for friction pressure drop, static pressure drop and acceleration pressure drop in Performance/Profiles. Show the following heat transfer coefficients in the Rating Page: Heat transfer coefficients of internal film, external film, pipe wall and external insulation.
100
Yokogawa PID (P, I, and D act on the error) I-PD (I acts on the error, P and D on PV) PI-D (P and I act on the error, D on PV)
101
Level Tap Option Now Available for the Sump Bottom Tray of Columns
Current Level Taps functionality of vessels is now also available for the Sump tray type of columns. Before the implementation of this feature, a custom calculation in a spreadsheet was required to accomplish it. Connectivity to other blocks -in particular to the PID controller- is also possible from the Level Tap.
102
Chemical, Petrochemical, Gas processing and other applications, Valid Phases = Vapor-Liquid or Vapor-Liquid-Liquid is more appropriate. The Water Solubility should be set to a value different from 3 (No Correction) for a Refinery application depending on your needs. The default value of 3 is appropriate for all other applications.
.HYSYS EO Analyzer can now be connected with inlet and outlet streams.
In EO Mode, connection equations to the properties calculated by the analyzer and the down stream block property variables are automatically built. Blocks, such as the EOSMC, that use these property values in their calculations are now complete in their EO formulations. The RateSep unit operation has been added to HYSYS EO. This allows use of the Aspen Plus Rate Based column in HYSYS EO. True and Apparent component approaches are supported by streams and blocks inside the HYSYS EO subflowsheet. True component compositions can be viewed in the outlet streams of blocks using True component approach.
Engineering Enhancements
NPSH Calculations in Pumps: The Thoma method was added as a new option for the calculation of the Required NPSH. In Steady State Required NPSH values are automatically calculated after each solver execution. Fitting Multiplier in Pipe Segment: When modeling a pipe it is common practice to lump all fittings of a certain type together. HYSYS now supports this workflow allowing you to enter the number of occurrences of a fitting rather than adding each fitting individually. The Process Utility Manager supports a new view showing all of the streams associated with a given utility. This eliminates the need to open each stream view to check for a given utility tag.
103
not available, the standard HYSYS_Process license will be checked out. While running dynamics in RUNTIME mode, there is no need for a HYSYS_Dynamics license. All other licenses will be checked out the same as standard HYSYS. In Runtime mode the following restrictions apply: Users cannot create/delete unit operations or streams. Users cannot change stream connectivity. Users cannot enter the basis environment.
Retired Models
A converter available from the AspenTech Support web site will allow you to convert from a Heat Exchanger using Aspen TASC to the newer Aspen Shell & Tube Exchanger (Shell & Tube, formerly Aspen Tasc+) and convert Air Coolers using Aspen ACOL to the Aspen Air Cooled Exchanger (AirCooled, formerly Aspen Acol+). This change will cause different results, but the results are based on updated heat exchanger research and should be more accurate than the results of the older programs. Important: This (V7.1) is the last version of Aspen HYSYS that will support TASC and ACOL. We strongly encourage you to upgrade to Shell & Tube and AirCooled now. Aspen TASC is not included with the current version of Aspen Exchanger Design & Rating. In order to use the legacy TASC program with HYSYS in V7.1, you must install Aspen TASC 2006.5. In order to use the converter to convert TASC to Shell & Tube, you must install Aspen TASC 2006.5 and Aspen Shell & Tube Exchanger. Aspen ACOL is not included with the current version of Aspen Exchanger Design & Rating. In order to use the legacy ACOL program with HYSYS in V7.1, you must install Aspen ACOL 2006.5. In order to use the converter to convert ACOL to Shell & Tube, you must also install Aspen ACOL 2006.5 and Aspen Air Cooled Exchanger.
All settings in TASC and most settings in ACOL can be represented precisely in Shell & Tube and AirCooled.

In HYSYS, the standard modeling approach is Sequential Modular (SM). The SM strategy solves each block in the flowsheet in sequence, where given its inlet streams, each block computes its outlet streams. When recycles are present, flowsheet iteration is required. Although effective for many types of simulations, the SM strategy can be very time-consuming for certain types of problems. EO modeling is an alternate strategy for solving flowsheet simulations. Instead of solving each block in sequence, EO gathers all the model equations together and solves them at the same time. For this reason, EO modeling is sometimes called equation-based or simultaneous equation modeling. The EO strategy can be very effective for the kinds of problems for which SM is weakest, such as: highly heat-integrated processes highly recycled processes processes with many design specifications process optimization process model tuning through data reconciliation and parameter estimation
Usually, these types of problems are difficult to solve with SM strategy, because they require many successive solutions to the flowsheet and might
118
contain many nested convergence loops. Although the number of variables and equations can be very large, EO solves the entire flowsheet simultaneously without nested convergence loops and utilizes analytical first order derivatives. As a result, EO strategy can solve much larger problems using the same computational effort. In this version, EO capabilities are available as a licensable option of Aspen HYSYS. Also, several enhancements have been added to the previous version only available in Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining and Aspen HYSYS Upstream. Several EO unit operations have been enabled: Splitters/Mixers Heaters/Coolers/Heat Exchangers Heat Exchanger Modeling: HXFlux (LMTD model) Distillation columns and liquid-liquid extraction Pumps/Compressors Plug Flow Reactor: RPlug Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor: RCSTR
Some of the common HYSYS workflow features are continually supported within the EO Flowsheet such as: Copy and Paste are now supported in the HYSYS EO subflowsheet. Multiple fluid packages are supported within the subflowsheet. Users can define component groups to select a smaller set of components to be applied for certain EO blocks. Default names for EO Blocks consistent with the way default names for unit operations are assigned in HYSYS.
Using the HYSYS Upstream option allows consistent thermodynamics and models across an integrated asset. These holistic models create powerful tools to make better decisions on Oil and Gas assets to improve the return on capital.

Aspen Hydraulics
There are two new steady-state unit operations available in the Aspen Hydraulics subflowsheet: (1) an orifice plate and (2) a bend. The orifice plate operation lets users model the effect of a sudden change of velocity in a pipeline, while the bend enables modeling of the effect of a change in flow direction. In v7.0, these new operations are only supported in steady-state simulations, the ability to model these fittings in dynamic simulations will be available in the coming release.
120
By modifying the flow area at the face By adding an irrecoverable loss term to the momentum equation that is proportional to a form-loss coefficient K ( ~ K v2).
For dynamic simulations in Aspen Hydraulics, the user now has the option of modeling a fitting through one, none, or both of these mechanisms. The modeling techniques for these fittings can be selected on the Dynamics tab of the specific fitting view with two new checkboxes: Model as an area change Model as a form loss
If the Model as an area change is selected, then the numerical flow area of the face representing the fitting will be modified as appropriate. For example, for an orifice plate, the flow area of the face that represents the orifice will be set to the cross-sectional area of the throat. If the Model as a form loss is selected, then a form loss factor will be estimated using the method selected in the Pressure drop selection box on the Data tab and the K v2 term is included in the momentum equation. Important: To include this additional form loss mechanism, form losses must be included globally with the Wall Friction option of the dynamic solver. If both of the checkboxes are selected, then both of these methods are included in the model. If both boxes are not checked, then the dynamic simulation will proceed as if the fitting does not exist. As a final note, care must be taken when modeling the area change at a fitting. If the area change is included in the model, then the size of the pipe cells adjacent to the fitting can have a significant impact on the pressure drop calculated across the fitting. It may be necessary that the length of the pipe cells be of the same order as the diameter of the fitting before the dynamic solution converges.

that can be used in planning and scheduling applications like PIMS-AO, Aspen Refinery Scheduler (formerly OrionXT), etc. The objective behind facilitating recalibration and exchange of submodels is that non-Engineers in Planning and Scheduling domains can use these refitted accurate models in their plant optimization analysis. The internal architectural layout of the PSR has also been re-designed, allowing the unit to solve much faster. This is a big advantage when loading and solving large refinery wide flowsheets containing many PSR units. Notes: Support of CME framework needs a new license enabled to work with HYSYS Petroleum Refining. Products such as PIMS-AO do not have the corresponding functionality enabled until a future release (i.e. aspenONE V7.1).
Petroleum Assays
The interface for the petroleum assay manager has been simplified in order to tighten the link between Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining and Aspen PIMS. PIMS formatted assays can now be easily imported and exported (new feature) from Petroleum Assay Manager. In the previous versions, user required a text based input file for mapping PIMS assay with petroleum assays. Now a simple step-by-step graphical wizard is implemented for mapping purposes which makes PIMS assay import/export easier to use.
Additionally, a new user interface has been implemented in order to characterize the petroleum assay from Macro-cut data. This interface requires distillation curve (TBP/D86/D1160/D2887 in different basis) and light end
127
information in order to generate the petroleum assay for any granularity. For assay properties it can take in properties curve (Boiling Point vs. Property value), bulk properties and extrapolation options in order to distribute properties among its components. The property characterization functionality mentioned above is also available on manipulator unit operation in order to shift properties using given property curve. This interface is also available on every stream and it can be exported to HYSYS spreadsheets, OLE, and Aspen Simulation Workbook (through HYSYS spreadsheet).
Petroleum Distillation
Aspen PIMS is well known for its enterprise-wide optimization capabilities. Aspen PIMS has two ways of modeling distillation process: (1) swing cut modeling and (2) short cut distillation (SCD) modeling. Swing cut modeling is a flow optimization problem that requires the product yields (sometimes referred to as LP vectors) for each main product as well as swing products. Whereas, the short cut distillation model is a proprietary method that calculates the product yield as a function of its effective cut points. The main reason to integrate the PIMS distillation operation with the Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining is to update the LP vectors in the swing cut utility modeling and to update the tuning parameters in the SCD modeling through rigorous HYSYS distillation column. For swing cut modeling approach in PIMS, Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining has a swing cut utility. This utility can now be run over a petroleum column as well as a rigorous distillation column. When this utility is applied to a petroleum column, it manipulates the TBP End Points for swing cuts and calculates the product yields and properties. On the other hand, when this utility is applied over a rigorous column, it calculates the flow specification value from TBP End Points specified in utility and rigorous column will be executed for different flow specifications in order to generate produce yields and properties.
Figure: Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining Short Cut Column Integration with PIMS
128
For the short cut distillation column modeling approach, a PIMS-generated SCD file can now be imported into Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining, and the Petroleum column will automatically be configured with equivalent information. The main purpose of importing PIMS SCD file into Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining is to determine its tuning parameters from the mass and energy balanced calibration data generated from rigorous distillation column. If the data generated from a rigorous column is reconciled and of good quality, the calibration performance is improved. The PIMS SCD can now be updated with these tuning parameters. Using these tuning parameters in overall refinery optimization problem will provide improved results. One of the barriers in using petroleum distillation column in Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining was its lengthy setup processes. Now the setup procedure for a petroleum distillation column has been simplified. The user will have two modes of setting up a petroleum column: (a) a simplified process (this does not require: a product draw stage/return stage, stripping steam data, reboiler data, and many other inputs) (b) a detailed process (this opens up input experts and the user can specify detailed information which is approximated in the simplified process). A stage-by-stage approach is not supported from this release; the user can always use the rigorous distillation column for this purpose.
129
When a hydroprocessor bed is added, the user can connect feed streams (combined liquid feed and hydrogen) to the hydroprocessor bed. Any feed stream attached to the hydroprocessor bed must use the components from the hcr.cml file and the HCRSRK fluid package that is created when importing hcr.cml. The user can use a stream cutter to get a stream on the correct component basis. The user can tune the model manually to match plant data by adjusting the basic tuning parameters or the advanced tuning parameters. The hydroprocessor bed may also be placed within an EO flowsheet that uses the fluid package and components from hcr.cml. Within the EO flowsheet environment the hydroprocessor bed can be placed from the EO palette or from the Flowsheet | Add Operation menu item.

131
The objectives of the CME framework are: CME will enable the use of Rigorous Engineering Models in Planning, Scheduling to facilitate greater accuracy and range of prediction. It will also enable use of simplified model types from Planning applications to be used in Engineering applications to increase scope of the engineering model, for example, users will be able to create a Refinery-wide simulation by using models derived from Planning applications and Engineering applications. Allow extensions to the model format. This enables more information to be authored and persisted with the model to assist incorporation of CME models authored in one application into another host application. Performance, Accuracy comparison utility for different levels of model fidelity (e.g. conversion units, crude units, etc.) Reduce or eliminate effort required for mapping of inputs/outputs of integrated model instances.
A new utility Common Model Utility allows users to generate in simulation environment CME models which can then be imported
132
into other applications such as Aspen PIMS and Aspen Refinery Scheduler. It is useful to build such CME models in HYSYS for complex models such as refinery reactors (Hydrocracker, FCC, Reformer, etc) which are typically based on several tens of thousands of equations and variables.
CME Visual Executive is available to all users and can be accessed through the Start | AspenTech. However, when using the Visual Executive, the user needs to manually assign attributes (such as physical type, units, connection types, etc) to the variables and organize variables into standard CME ports. The advantage when generating the CME model in HYSYS is that the model variables are automatically assigned the right attributes and organized into the standard CME ports, thus making the model ready to be seamlessly loaded into PIMS and Refinery Scheduler.
133
Petroleum Distillation
The Petroleum Column in V7.1 now also has an option to generate PIMS format SCD file using a step-by-step wizard. While writing a PIMS format SCD file, user can also add assays stored in petroleum assay manager. Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining now uses the OOMF framework for petroleum column simulation and calibration. This enables petroleum column to generate consistent simulation result as PIMS SCD and calibration results in petroleum column has been improved.

Added a trace warning to show the reason when RVP calculation fails. Macro-cut table is now able to characterize petroleum assay. So there is no need to characterize oil first and then transfer it as petroleum assay. When cancelling copy properties view - petroleum assay view was getting closed. This is fixed now. When importing PIMS assays Smoke Point Property was not imported, now it is imported. In Petroleum column, the plots in manual calibration mode were not updating after changing tuning parameters. It is fixed now. Stream's OLE interface is expanded to take in a shape of the curve for property vectors. (Function Name = ShiftStreamProperty). After adding a correlation (Aniline Point for example) on a stream and deleting that stream was causing a crash. Product Fractions and Cut Point Specification in petroleum column were not exported to HYSYS spreadsheet cell. It is exported now. On FCC calibration page the petroleum Feed Blend data cannot be copy/pasted into ASW. FCC may fail to solve when opened for a second time in the same HYSYS session.
CQ00323564
There is still a limit on how many times (probably 6 or 7) an FCC can be opened within the same session, but it can be open 2 or 3 times with no problem. For V7.0 and earlier FCC would crash if you deleted the feed type that was already associated with a feed. This has been fixed now. Issue Description The H2 consumption calculation is slightly off for the hydrocracker calibration "model" value. Gas to oil ratio enter for the hydrocracker doesn't match calculated value. When the user has 3 reactors and creates a feed, it only allows feed to go to the 3rd reactor from the split option. Mass balance issues for hydrocracker.
Issue Resolution Volume flow for plant and measured values now use same basis and can be matched exactly (theoretically). Gas to oil ratio now matches what you would calculate by dividing the gas rate by the feed rate. Feed can now be specified as going to the 3rd reactor of a 3 reactor hydrocracker.

The base unit for standard gas flow was defined from SCMH. However, this unit in Aspen Plus actually uses normal conditions and not standard conditions. The unit has been redefined for V7.1 to use standard conditions so that what is reported in the interface matches what is calculated by the model. The fraction of recycle H2 to the amine scrubber can now be specified. Alternatively, the percent of H2S in the recycle H2 can be specified. For V7.0 and earlier, modifications to the feed fingerprint didn't change some of the calculations for the feed adjust. As a result, the adjusted feed could be a bit off. This has been fixed for V7.1. When importing an older template into a V7.0 flowsheet, some parts of the reactor were not getting recalled properly. This has been fixed for V7.1. All adjusted kinetic lumps are now showing up for V7.1. Some were missing for V7.0. When weight basis is selected for a feed connected to the reformer, the PNA will be passed on a mass basis now. Air face velocity between 1 and 9.5 m/s Air temperature between 0 and 100 deg C HTFS3-AC is the default method for air cooler geometries and process conditions within the above ranges. The pressure drop predictions of the HTFS3-AC method are on average about 4% lower than those of the general HTFS3a method, but larger differences are possible depending on air velocity and temperature. Heat transfer predictions of the HTFS3-AC method are on average with 2% of the HTFS3a method, but larger differences arise at the extremes of the air face velocity range.

The inlet pressure, outlet pressure, and maximum pressure loss are set as required on the same form. The ability of calculating the inlet pressure of any process stream in the fired heater given a specified outlet pressure will be important for users needing to supply the process fluid to an upstream unit (e.g., a vacuum column) at a particular pressure. In the Checking calculation, the calculated pressure change is scaled when determining outlet pressure from inlet, so that the outlet pressure remains at the initially specified value. The result of such a Checking calculation is a ratio of the calculated to the specified pressure change. The benefit of a Checking calculation is that it safeguards against the case where the calculated pressure change is much larger than anticipated, maybe approaching, or even larger than, a specified inlet pressure. This would have the effect of introducing pressure values into the calculation which are either impossible, or which would lead to other properties which would severely distort the thermal calculations. For this reason, two further pressure calculation options are available. These are to do simulation calculations (outlet from inlet or inlet from outlet) as long as the pressure changes are small, but should the pressure change exceed the (user-specified) maximum pressure drop, the calculation reverts to Checking the pressure change. It reports the ratio of the predicted change to
158
the maximum value, but never allows calculated pressures fall below the limit defined by the maximum pressure drop.

If tubes need to be removed to make space for these baffles, you can simply specify the remaining number of tubes in the input.

outlet temperature. This continues to be the default method in Aspen Shell & Tube Exchanger V7.0. However, in practice, when the outlet temperature is above the bubble point, the vapour-gas and condensate outlet temperatures can be different. Aspen Shell & Tube Exchanger V7.0 provides a new option in which the calculation is weighted towards the area required to cool the condensate to the required outlet temperature. This will usually give higher overall heat transfer coefficients than the default method, and is similar to the method used by the Hetran program. There is a new input item in the Program Options form to allow selection of the appropriate method.

and frictional pressure gradients, will be based on 20 passes, as will the flow length along which the tube side pressure drop is based. You should explicitly specify the total number of tubes in the exchanger, to make sure this is correct, since a tube layout with 20 passes will often have slightly fewer tubes than one with 10. The pass multiplier does not have to be an integer. For example, 20 passes could be modeled as 16 passes and multiplier of 1.25. A multiplier of 2, however, would mean that you could edit the tube layout, removing a line of tubes in the middle of each of the 10 passes, to give a tube layout that appeared to have 20 passes. Whenever you specify a pass multiplier, you will get a Results Warning, reminding you that the geometry is based one number of passes, while the performance is based on a different number. There is a further warning should the multiplier give you a non-integral number of passes. The multiplier is not applied if the basic exchanger has a single pass. Modeling 20 passes by specifying a 2-pass exchanger with a multiplier of 10 is possible but unwise, since temperature difference effects may not be modeled accurately. Once the number of passes exceeds 4 or 6, there is usually little change in multi-pass temperature difference effects. The multiplier can be used in Design mode; a multiplier of 2 is recommended, but check any Design carefully, to get the number of tubes correct. The input can be found in Calculations Options as shown below:

Aspen MUSE
Product Description
Aspen MUSE performs detailed simulation of multi-stream plate-fin heat exchangers made from brazed aluminum, stainless steel or titanium. It can be used standalone by the thermal specialist for exchanger design or as an integrated product with AspenTech's steady-state process simulation program, HYSYS. When used as a stand-alone program, Aspen MUSE can be used for both first pass calculations and detailed layer-by-layer analysis to evaluate new uses, revamps, process conditions and fouling cases. It can also perform full thermosyphon modeling, where one or more exchanger streams are subject to natural circulation, as well as crossflow streams. When integrated with HYSYS, Aspen MUSE provides engineers with the ability to rigorously model processes that use multi-stream plate-fin heat exchangers, such as LNG, ethylene, or air separation. It can be used to identify capital saving opportunities in the overall process configuration. Bottlenecks can be identified, process improvements modeled for various process operating scenarios.

186
at ambient temperatures and above. It also provides facilities for doing a first shot design of this type of exchanger, and for modeling thermosiphon reboilers.
Simulation
The new Simulation options provide the same fundamental facilities as Aspen MUSE, with modeling based on either the common wall temperature assumption (stream by stream) or full modeling of each of the layers in the exchanger, which permits the layer pattern (stacking pattern) to be assessed, both in terms of performance and structural implications due to thermal stressing. A new calculation procedure gives more flexibility in modeling the full geometric complexity of these exchangers, and in achieving solutions for exchangers with very tight temperature pinches. At present the calculation focuses on standard counter-flow geometries, including draw on/off at any point along the exchanger, and combining or dividing redistributors. Crossflow geometries will be added in the next release.
Layer Types
The new facility for specifying the geometry of each layer type provides a significant advance on the stream-based geometry specification in MUSE. Not only is the specification easier, being more closely related to the information available on an exchanger drawing, but restrictions implicit in the streambased specification, such as all layers for a stream having the same fin types and distributor layout, are removed. The input provided is also shown in a diagram, on both an overall exchanger and individual layer basis, providing an additional check on the consistency and correctness of the data supplied.
HTFS Methods
The methods for heat transfer and pressure drop in plate fin exchangers uses HTFS technology for these exchangers, for both single phase and two-phase flows. This builds on many years of experimental research and development which gives HTFS unique experience on plate fin exchangers. All the options in Aspen MUSE are available in Aspen Plate Fin Exchanger, including accessing fin data banks used with MUSE, and switching between versions of
187
methods. Some new features, such as user-specification of nozzle losses, are introduced.
User Interface
The new user interface in Aspen Plate Fin Exchanger means that all the programs in the Aspen Exchanger Design and Rating (EDR) family now share a common structure. This provides access to the extensive range of Aspen Properties options, and facilities for linking input and output data to Excel. An option to import process and properties data from an Aspen HYSYS LNG block is available, and full links permitting the program to be used as part of a HYSYS simulation are planned for a future release. The new user interface includes Active Input Checking, so that every unset input item either shows a default value, or indicates that an input is mandatory, or is grayed out to indicate it is not needed in the current context. All defaults and input indicators are revised after each new input item is specified, and an indication is given when an item is in error. These input facilities, together with extensive Help text, make specification of even complex multi-stream exchangers and their operating conditions relatively straightforward. The new User Interface can import Aspen MUSE input data files, and translate them into the new data format for Aspen Plate Fin Exchanger.
Design
The new Design option relies on the same well-established logic as Aspen MUSE, but provides additional features. The first shot design needs only process data as input. The logic provides heuristics for selecting fin and distributor types, followed by an optimization for the length, width and number of each layer type, to give the required duty for each stream, consistent with specified pressure drop constraints. There is then a very flexible facility to do a more detailed design, specifying some parts for the exchanger geometry, such as fins or distributors to be used, and leaving the program to determine any unset geometry. New features not in MUSE include design with multiple fin types for each stream, and more control over redistribution and multiple streams in a layer. After a Design, the results can be used to update the exchanger geometry, ready for a Simulation calculation.
Calculation Options
New calculation options include the ability to perform Checking calculations, as well Simulation, and heat transfer in distributors. Checking calculations (on a stream by stream basis) provide a broad indication of how the surface area of each stream compares with that needed for a specified duty. Distributor heat transfer, which is optional, allows distributors to be explicitly included in the exchanger thermal performance, rather than ignoring them, and treating any heat transfer there as simply providing a margin. There are also options to specify the resolution of the calculation grid along the exchanger, convergence parameters, and the convergence levels
188
required. There is a monitor reporting the progress of the iterations, including a facility to intervene and stop calculations before they are complete.
Thermosiphons
The new features for thermosiphons include additional calculation options, and improved pipework specification. It is possible either to calculate the change in inlet resistance needed for a specified thermosiphon flow and head, or the flow produced by a specified heat and inlet and outlet pipework. A simpler option, in which the head, resistances and flow are all fixed, is also possible, leaving the program to predict the any pressure inconsistencies around the thermosiphon loop. Pipework can now either be specified in full detail, indicating, individual pipe lengths, bends, diameter changes manifolds, for both inlet and outlet, or at a very simple level, specifying pipework losses as a percentage of the driving pressure head, removing the need for any pipework geometry to be specified. Internal reboilers, where the exchanger is located within the column sump, can also be modeled.
Output
There in extensive new tabular and graphical output. The performance and geometry of the exchanger is recorded, as is the overall performance of each stream in terms of inlet and outlet conditions. Pressure losses are reported for nozzles, distributors and main fin, with an analysis of variation across layers, and the risk of flow mal-distribution. There are detailed output tables recording the state of each stream at each calculation point along the exchanger, together with key parameters such as heat flux, cumulative load, heat transfer coefficients, fin efficiency and pressure gradients. All these parameters can be displayed in graphical form for each stream. The graph showing the temperature of all the streams, together with a mean wall temperature, is a very helpful indicator of exchanger performance. There is a diagram of the exchanger in the output, including in Design mode. Unlike in MUSE, the same output is provided for Simulation and Design modes. A zigzag diagram is produced whenever a layer pattern is specified, including sub-diagrams for a set of sections along the length of the exchanger. A range of error and warning messages are produced, indicating actual or potential problems with either the input or calculated results. Even after errors as many results as possible are displayed, to provide information which may help avoid the problem in subsequent runs. There is a table giving information on a set of measures of convergence accuracy for each stream.
Compatibility Notes

automatically performs mechanical designs for equipment and bulks, using self-contained international design, estimating, and scheduling procedures, you have the accurate, detailed answers you need at the 3-5% stage of engineering. With Aspen Capital Cost Estimator, you profit from early information. You can evaluate projects during the preliminary design phase, evaluate projects during the design and construction phases, and evaluate process/project design alternatives. You can evaluate scope changes, bid tabs, vendor quotes, change orders, as well as offer new services with current resources, making use of time saved by Aspen Capital Cost Estimator.
In Aspen Basic Engineering, the new Layout drawing type is accessed in the Drawing Editor application. These functions can be performed to create the project layout: Locate areas defined in the Aspen Capital Cost Estimator project Locate/arrange project equipment within designated areas. Exclusion or safety zones conforming to Industrial Insurance spacing requirements are calculated and shown on the layout drawing (as dashed lines) for each equipment item to assist in arrangement.

Area dimensions and location can be changed graphically Equipment locations can be changed graphically Equipment within an area will move with the area when the area is relocated on the drawing Update scaling to zoom in/out of layout to fine tune equipment arrangement Printout hard copies of plot plan for areas and project Equipment can not be placed outside an area Equipment can not be placed in areas different from their parent areas (areas they were specified in Aspen Capital Cost Estimator) Equipment can not be placed on each other, which would violate the exclusion zone concept unless the area type is specified as OPEN, EXOPEN or MODULE. If the area type is OPEN, EXOPEN or MODULE, equipment can be placed on each other, which is assumed to be at different levels (or Z height coordinates). However, the layout represents a top down view and, as such, different levels are not isolated within the view. Areas cannot be placed where they will get negative coordinates Piperack symbols can be placed on a drawing for graphical representation only. Note: No data resulting from the layout arrangement for piperacks will be transmitted back to Aspen Capital Cost Estimator.
Areas cannot be rotated; equipment can be rotated only through 90 degree increments. Area size can be changed by using top and right handles only Equipment footprint size and safety dimensions cannot be graphically modified in the plotplan. These values (either calculated or inputted by the user) are set in Aspen Capital Cost Estimator. Only equipment coordinates (used to calculate spatial relationships) are modified within the layout. Area dimensions, locations and equipment locations from the user generated plot plan are imported into Aspen Capital Cost Estimator
In Aspen Capital Cost Estimator, a project evaluation is performed to calculate interconnected piping lengths: Aspen Capital Cost Estimator uses equipment locations to calculate interconnected piping lengths
Note: Use of interconnected VPID feature is necessary to calculate new line lengths. The lengths calculated for Interconnected Lines are composed of two parts: A fixed length determined from the layout using equipment X, Y, Z coordinates to calculate relative distances between the components A variable length calculated from equipment internal volumetric models using equipment parameters (e.g., tower height) Total length is the sum of both parts

New Grid type (i.e. spreadsheet) layouts enable the following: Modification of Area Specs across all areas by Discipline Modification of Equipment Specs can be made by equipment type (e.g. pumps, vessels, heat exchangers, towers, etc.)
The new grids will expedite data entry, edit, and review in an easier grid layout. From the grid, users will be able to: Access main component forms to access installation bulks, VPIDS, Volumetric Model, etc. Copy and paste data to and from Excel Sort by different equipment type or column (e.g. Materials of Construction, Flowrate, etc.) Add/Delete components
This new feature will help increase data entry speed and review.
Indexing Improvements

External Indexing
This new feature externalizes Material, Man-hour, and Location indexing. This helps assist users in calibrating to a new cost basis by updating an existing Project Level Index with a new one. Also, external index library file can be created using the library editor. The external index file can be selected, edited, and used at the project level. At the area level, indices may be edited and applied cumulatively or to replace the project level indices.
New Reports
New Standard Area Reports are included with this release: Component Listings with Equipment Cost (equipment cost was not previously included in the component listings reports). The new reports are located: Full Import_Other Reports_Area_Component Listings_Sorted by ID Full Import_Other Reports_Area_Component Listings_Sorted by Name

Further Improvements for Equipment and Area Data Entry via Grid Mechanism
Provide additional equipment breakdowns so the equipment grids can display input specifications for more alike component types. From the original View Menu a user will be able to go directly to any category under the spreadsheet view either with a single drop down or dropdown with -> to go to a further level. The breakdowns that will be presented are: Vessels All Horizontal Vertical Pressure (containing models: CYLINDER, MULTI WALL, JACKETED, SPHERE, SPHEROID) Storage (containing models: STORAGE, GAS HOLDER, CRYOGENIC, PLAST TANK, WOOD TANK, CONE BTM, LIVE BTM, SAN TANK) Tile Chest (containing models: CHEST CYL, CHEST RYL, CHEST MTL) Heat Exchangers All Reboilers Heat Exchangers All TEMA (containing models: FIXED T S, FLOAT HEAD, U TUBE, TEMA, PRE ENGR) Sanitary (containing models: CORRUGATED, HOT WATER, MULTI P F, STM HE MOD Air Cooler (containing model AIR COOLER) Miscellaneous (containing all models not included above) Compressors All Gas Centrifugal (containing models: CENTRIF, CENTRIF IG) Reciprocating (containing models: RECIP MOTR, RECIP GAS)

Currently in the V7.0 release, user defined custom attributes will only appear on the standard equipment component input forms and will not be shown on the spreadsheet grids. This prevents a user from exporting all of the information about the equipment. Implementing this capability will enable all fields that appear on the standard input forms to also appear on the equipment grids. Using the ALL COMPONENTS should also include the various equipment spreadsheet views. If a user wants a custom attribute to appear on a specific spreadsheet view, then the MODEL name use should be that shown in the preferences for the view the attribute is to appear in. Allow User Customization of Spreadsheet Forms. Use new options in the Tools/Preferences, a user can now define the desired fields to be visible in the various flavors of Spreadsheet Views in the GUI. The default fields displayed will be predetermined by Aspen and users will be able to make desired modifications.

should be used above and below the cutoff in Design Basis Equipment Specs. These selections will be applied in the design ONLY when the design temperature value is entered in the equipment form (either by the user or as a result of sizing). If design temperature is not specified for these components, this feature will not be active. The cutoff design temperature and the materials selected by user will be applied in the equipment design as follows: If the user has entered a shell material in the equipment form, the value entered in the equipment form will be used. If the user has NOT entered a design temperature or shell material in the forms, then default design temperature and shell material below cutoff will be used (e.g. 650 F and A285C for shell and tube heat exchangers). If the user has entered a design temperature but NOT entered shell material, then the shell material below cutoff will be used if equip. design temperature < cutoff design temperature. If equip. design temperature > cutoff design temperature, then shell material above cutoff will be used. Furthermore, previously the default shell material for single and double diameter towers was A515. This has been changed to A516 to represent current design specifications. Since the stress properties and costs are similar for these two materials, existing projects wont be unduly impacted.

Process Development
The Process Development collection of applications applies to any business that is doing scale-up from the lab to the pilot plant to manufacturing scale for batch processes. Process Development has new functionality with the V7.0 and V7.1 releases: Additional Solubility Modeling support with Aspen Properties for solubility studies Reaction modeling support for reaction kinetics estimation within Aspen Batch Distillation Significant user interface upgrades in Aspen Batch Process Developer A new Process Development Console to manage files associated with a project
The aspenONE Process Development applications support batch process development in two major areas. The first is in managing information associated with batch processes as companies scale their processes from the lab into pilot environments and finally into the plant. This is primarily associated with Aspen Batch Process Developer (formerly Aspen Batch Plus) with additional backing from the Aspen Process Manual. This informationcentric activity is supported by the second element of our process development suite: modeling and simulation tools. These tools enable our customers to do build kinetic models of reactions from laboratory data, explore the solubility characteristics of their new compounds, conduct detailed studies of dynamic distillation, separation and chromatography operations, and run a number of other simulations and studies.

common solvents is available. The new model in this release supports nonelectrolyte systems only and will be extended to cover electrolyte systems in the future. For more details, please see Aspen Properties Help. Aspen Solubility Modeler consists of two Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and an Aspen Properties file configured to allow you to quickly and easily calculate the solubility information you need using the power of the Aspen Properties engine. The two Excel spreadsheets are: Regression.xls for regressing model parameters Calculation.xls for performing solubility calculations
The regression spreadsheet can be used to determine the NRTL-SAC parameters for a drug through regression of experimental data. The Calculation spreadsheet can be used to predict its solubility based on these parameters. Both Aspen Properties and Aspen Solubility Modeler (both in the Process Development module) must be installed in order to use Aspen Solubility Modeler. While it is running, it uses an Aspen Properties license. Before you use Aspen Solubility Modeler, you should configure Excel as described in the section Configuring Excel for Aspen Solubility Modeler below.

Reaction Modeling
New reaction modeling capabilities have been added that enable you to identify reaction kinetics models using experimental measurements from reaction calorimeters. Key features of the new functionality are: An easy to use user interface that fully supports the model identification workflow and enables easy copying of experimental data from Excel. Powerful numerical solvers for finding the best fit to your data. Kinetic models consistent with other AspenTech products such as Aspen Plus, Aspen Plus Dynamics, and Aspen Batch Distillation, enabling you to use the fitted parameters directly within these products. Use of Aspen Properties for estimating physical properties required for the model identification process. Using the exact same physical property methods and data that you use when running reactor simulations in other AspenTech tools ensures consistent results.
The new reaction modeling functionality includes access to Aspen Properties for physical property calculations. This does not require a separate Aspen Properties license. For systems which contain new molecules that are not included in the Aspen Properties databanks, you have the option to estimate properties using a simpler method that only requires basic data such as density and heat capacity. The Reaction Modeling feature can be accessed by selecting Aspen Reaction Modeler in the Process Development V7.0 folder on the Start menu. If you are an existing user of Aspen Batch Distillation and would like to use the reaction modeling functionality, please contact your account manager to obtain a license to use this feature at no additional cost.

252
These options make it easy for you to find all changes to the default values and specifications that you have made for review, reporting, or other purposes.
Compatibility Notes
Aspen Chromatography V7.0 and V7.1 can be installed and used at the same time as version 2006.5 and other previous versions of Aspen Chromatography. However, observe following compatibility issues when upgrading your existing simulations to V7.0 or V7.1: The ImpEuler (11.), VSIE (11.1) and Gear (11.1) integrators were old implementations that have been superseded by the Implicit Euler and Gear integrators that were introduced in the 12.1 release. They were included in the 12.1, 2004 and 2004.1 versions to give time for transition of existing simulations to the new integrators. These integrators have been withdrawn from version 2006 and later. If you load a simulation that uses one of these integrators it will automatically switch to using the equivalent newer integrator, and will select option and tolerance values that match the old integrator as closely as possible. Aspen Chromatography Language (.cra) files generated using previous versions of Aspen Chromatography are compatible with V7.0 and V7.1. You may see some warning messages when loading .cra files created with previous versions. This is a result of some solver options that have become obsolete or have been renamed. Saving the file in Aspen Chromatography V7.0 or V7.1 eliminates these warnings. The Export Compiled Flowsheet command enables you to create a dll containing a compiled form of an Aspen Chromatography flowsheet, and to use this flowsheet in Aspen Plus. If you used this feature in a version
253
before V7.0 or V7.1, the compiled flowsheet may not run in Aspen Plus V7.0 or V7.1. You will need to export the flowsheet again in Aspen Chromatography V7.0 or V7.1 before you can use it in Aspen Plus. Aspen Chromatography Document (.crb) files exported from previous versions Aspen Chromatography cannot be loaded in V7.0 or V7.1. Load these files into the previous version and export them as .cra files, which can then be loaded into V7.0 or V7.1. Note when using Aspen Properties/Aspen Plus property package: If your Aspen Chromatography V7.0 or V7.1 input file includes the Aspen Properties property package, you can load it directly into Aspen Chromatography V7.0 or V7.1. If you are using an external property package in the form of an Aspen Plus .appdf file or an Aspen Properties .aprpdf file, then these files created with earlier versions of that software are not compatible with Aspen Chromatography V7.0 or V7.1. If you try to load a physical properties file (.appdf or .aprpdf) that was generated using an earlier version of Aspen Plus or Aspen Properties, the following error message appears: Aspen Properties abort Unable to open properties definition file "cornsyrup.appdf" The file may need to be regenerated from a compatible version of Aspen Plus After you receive this error, exit Aspen Chromatography before loading any further simulations. To continue, you must regenerate the .appdf or .aprpdf file using Aspen Plus V7.0 or V7.1 or Aspen Properties V7.0 or V7.1.
