Aim: Students will demonstrate the ability to change from patting with the steady beat to clapping the

rhythm of the words. Materials: Stamp pads Song - Jambo Poem Rope Rhyme Worksheet- Bonefish Bluebird Construction paper Bean Bag Lesson Development: 1. Read the poem Rope Rhyme 2. Have students name some of their favorite games to play outdoors. Discuss similarities and differences in the games, including whether or not they have a steady beat. 3. Tell students Today were going to sing songs, move, and play games to a steady beat. 4. Introduce the song Jambo. Have students listen to Jambo while patting the steady beat. 5. Tell how the beat differs from the rhythm of the words. (The beat is steady and unchanging. The rhythm of the words corresponds to the long and short sounds of the syllables) 6. Echo teach Jambo 7. Sing Jambo. Change from clapping the rhythm of the words-when your hand is raised-to patting the steady beat-when your hand is lowered. 8. Distribute Bonefish worksheets 9. Have children listen to Bonefish Bluebird as they tap the beat bars on page 3. 10. Listen again while they pat the beat on their shoulders. Determine if they hear beats where there are no words, or silence. 11. Clap the rhythm of the words and hold thumbs up on the rests. 12. In a circle have students have students extend only their right fist into the circle. Say Bonefish, Bluebird as you tap each childs fist with your own, on tap per beat, moving around in the circle. (At the end of Bonefish, Bluebird identify the children who were tapped on the rest and have them sit down) Continue the game until everyone is sitting down. 13. Play the stone-passing game, using a beanbag as the stone. Grasp it on the first beat and place it in front of the neighbor to the right on the second beat. (The child who has the stone on the last beat of the song is out and gets a turn to play on a drum: beat, beat, rest, rest.) 14. Art: Make thumbprint pictures and use the thumbprints to make animals. Assessment: Using a drum, tell students they can move around the room only when you play a steady beat and freeze when you play a rhythm.
