Tribology

Tribology is defined as the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion and of related subjects and practices. It deals with (1) the technology of lubrication (2) control of friction, and (3) prevention of wear.

Learning Objectives
1.Describe surface topography, physico-chemical aspects of solid surfaces, and surface interactions. 2. Understand mechanics of solid contacts, elastic contacts, and elastoplastic contacts. 3. Recognize the laws of friction, mechanisms of friction and friction space, friction and stick slip, and surface temperature.
2

4. Appreciate types of wear, including adhesive, delamination, fretting, abrasive, erosive, corrosive, oxidational, solution, impact, melt, and wear-mechanism maps. 5. Identify types of lubrication, including boundary, solid-film, hydrostatic, hydrodynamic, elastohydrodynamic, and thermo elastohydrodynamic lubrication.
3

6. Examine applications, including rolling contacts, electric contacts, magnetic recording systems, microelectromechanical systems, joint prosthesis, and microtribology. 7. Analyze the design of tribological surfaces, and how to troubleshoot tribology problems.
